Build Your Own Slab Flattening Router Sled

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever wonder how to flatten a wood slab? In this video I show you how to build your own slab flattening router sled. This project came together with very few hiccups and in the end I have a solid jig for slab flattening I can use for years to come. All the parts are listed below. Most links lead to affiliate links, which will pay me a small commission, so feel free to do your own searches or use the links provided. No pressure either way. Also, I have listed links to other videos I used to help me build this.

My sled(slab flattener) is 2 3"× 6" aluminum rectangle tubes 4' long for the rails and 2 2"× 2"× 1/4" angles 4' long with a polycarbonate base for the router support. Just slide the angles along the rails. Use a 2" Whiteside flattening bit. It will flatten a slab up to 24" wide and 4' long and 2" to 4" thick. Works well so far. Got all the aluminum at work, so it was inexpensive too.

That thing is cool Dino. I want a flattening setup however I have a drum sander and that works pretty well also for now. One day, I'll have one. Great video bud!

Thanks man! I would love a drum sander. But this was a more cost effective option for now.

I hate it when KZreadrs fail to credit their sources of inspiration. Thanks for doing so. I believe acrylic is a much better choice than plywood. You could even improve dust collection with a CNC dust shoe! I can't wait to build mine.

Thank you, I appreciate you saying that! The CNC dust shoe is an excellent idea. I will see what it would take to incorporate it.

What speed was your drill press at for the holes in the plexiglass?

  • @TheSharkShed

I used the same speed I use for most wood, 2800 RPMs, wich is also the high setting on this particular press.

Could you let me know the screw sizes for the 20mm rail glides and the 16mm glides. Great video well done!!

Screws came with the 16mm rails, so I am not sure what it was. For the 20mm rail, I believe it is an M5 screw size. I am not sure of the length I used, but I think it was about 1/2 inch. Hope this helps. Glad you enjoyed the video!

What was the rough cost (outside of the router and underlying table)? Thanks! Good job.
