Build your own mudroom...but avoid my mistakes.

Ready to transform your mudroom? Well, you can (and should) do it WITHOUT resorting to IKEA.
Watch as I build a custom set of built-in mudroom cabinets for my sister that completely opened up the space. Before it was crowded and cluttered (as it usually is with a family of 4), but with this
entryway renovation, every family member now has their own space. This renovation did take longer
than expected due to the design changes, electrical work, drywall work, trim, paint, and hardware
choices, but in the end...EVERYONE was happy! #cabinetmaking

    Always love your uploads Keith! This project, like all of your projects, turned out amazing! I also wanted to help shed some light on the grooves on the back of the hardwood flooring. I worked for a large flooring manufacturer for about 6 years, 2 years of which I spent as a claims analyst meaning I had the opportunity to review thousands of hardwood flooring samples for manufacturing defect. First, the grooves are referred to as hollow backs and while they may serve some variety of purposes based on the theories you mentioned there was a very specific purpose they for sure served. The purpose they are used for is identifying which manufacturing plant the flooring came from. In the company I worked for we had four solid hardwood plants and each plant had a unique hollow back they would mill into the back of each board. This would allow us, as claims analysts, to identify and code the manufacturing defect back to the appropriate plant! A subsequent benefit is that we could also identify if flooring came from us in general. We received, a shocking number of times, flooring that wasn’t even ours to evaluate for defects. There is likely some other benefit, or was at one point, but the hollow backs became very purposeful in regards to being able to identify hardwood flooring. Hope this helps enlighten someone about hardwood flooring.

    This is awesome info, Kyle! Thank you. Wow, I never would have guessed that. I know a lot of lumber companies seal the end grain of boards with a certain paint color so you know it's theirs, but it never occurred to me that hardwood flooring was identified with the shape of the hollow back. Makes more sense than having to stamp each plank with a company logo. Super appreciate the info! 👊

    Great job on this Keith. I’ve never built cabinets save for some shop furniture. This video really shows how complicated the process is. Yes its just making boxes but so many details to keep in mind. Gonna need to figure it out soon cause my wife is getting inpatient for her finished laundry room. I’ll have to revisit wht your video series covers as it may show me what I need to know when designing cabinet systems.

    I know that as a carpenter, we have our pride, and we like to do custom. That said, I’ve been making a lot of these types of projects. (tv consoles, built-ins, laundry rooms, mud rooms, etc…) Something I’ve starting using is pre-fab butcher block countertops from a local supplier. I can get white oak, maple, walnut, etc… and they look amazing once finished. They only cost me $200 to $500 for 12’ slabs, and I can get a lot of projects out of them.

    The grooves under the flooring follows the same principle as why trim has grooves on the back. It help removes some of the "tension" of the wood and will allow you to manipulate your piece a little bit more

    Hi the grooves in the underneath of the flooring is to help prevent a defect known as cupping from occurring in the board. It also provides a sort of key for any flooring adhesive to spread should you decide to glue down the boards

    Great video, Keith. I love those Divarios, but once the push ones are in, they're in! I have to mask them off if I'm spraying and then you can't lay the panels flat in the van. Grrr.

    I am fascinated that in the USA, the majority of cabinet makers use plywood and in the UK it is HDF (high-density MDF). I have seen very similar work done in HDF that eliminates several steps. Plus everything can be professionally sprayed in 2 part epoxy for a perfect finish.

  • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking

    @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, we all do things quite differently, but end up with similar results. We can get HDF, but it isn't readily available and it's heavy and expensive. And finding a good finisher is very difficult. I'm fascinated that you chaps drive on the wrong side of the road 😜👍

    @@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking , its a memory thing. I left it open on the iPad and here I am. This has been so enjoyable to watch. Most of the builds I watch are women and they’re building in place, so it was entertaining to watch you build the bottom upside down and backwards on the table. I kept think ing-it’s gonna be backwards. Yay you! New subber.
