For Power Increase, I find that taking a lot of wounded when my score is at zero, then healing, or storing up wounded troops until the event can get you a pretty big score. As can stripping all the gear off your sub-city generals then putting it all back on during the event. EDIT: Also don't be afraid to keep multiple copies of good generals for ascension through Blood of Ares.
