I once made a little quarter pipe out of a sawhorse construction workers left behind. I just put some plywood on one side. Transition was a little tight at first but after skating it for a few months it mellowed out and eventually after a thousand hours of abuse the transition was pretty good. Had so much fun skating and launching off that thing.
