hey, magnus. i think the reason you get cramps in your forearms when you’re doing two armed hangs with weight is because you’re applying a lot of force in a different position than when you do single armed hangs. and perhaps the reason why you don’t get it when you do two armed hangs without weight is because there is not enough weight, or force, to cause a cramp. i think when you do two armed hangs you put your forearms in an uncomfortable position. maybe it’s your anatomy or maybe it’s your form but that’s what it sounds like to me. great video btw!

9:15 hanging by just one hand allows for some degree of body rotation that naturally comes due to the asymmetry in the distribution of weight. When hanging by two hands, both forearms in a forced, fixed pronated position, hence the additional strain in the pronator, supinator, and rest of the arm muscles.

  • @guywithabeard

I can actually explain the cramping with a very probable hypothesis: When hanging with one arm, Magnus rotates outward, effectively allowing his shoulder to even out the inward rotation (pronation) of his lower arms. Hangine with both arms locks the shoulder joint. Having arms a little bent engages the lats and even creates slight inward rotation at the shoulder. This forces the elbow joint into even more pronation. Whenever a muscle (with it's sarcomeres, it's contractile units) is put on tension while shortened (because of more pronation), due to a process called tetanization and due to more metabolic stress, symptoms such as cramping are more common.

Kudos, this is accurate. And to add more onto this, there is a real reason why Magnus feels cramp in one forearm. It's because both forearms have different internal organs of muscles, so their attachment and their neural connections are different. Usually people are one-handed, and usually this is the right-hand (we observe this phenomenon in most animals from mammals to insects). The primary hand usually has more neural connection and usually takes more of the stress during the exercise, and would start from a more tired state. So cramps usually happen on your dominant hand instead of your secondary one. However, depending on other factors this can change.

EDIT: okay we did it magnus got the info 👍PLEASE LIKE SO THEY CAN SEE! Magnus this finger twiching is caused by Creatine kinase that your body produces after big weight that your fingers need to handle. It should not happen too much when getting long intense workout on low weights. It happens whem muscles are overloaded. I know that becouse i had the same issue and i visited a doctor. EDIT(Since someone reminded me to add this): what can you do to prevent this? (Thats what doctor told me): 1. Eat magnessium and dark chockolate so your neurological system would work more properly and prevent muscle crumps when they are not nessesery. 2. Do not overload my body and go 100% on every traning 3. Most importantly better quality rest! For recover. 4. Better warm up.

Magnus, first kudos for accomplishing all these great challenges and giving super advice. Second, one hypothesis for your cramping after a weighted two-hand dead hang vs. a non-weighted one-hand one is the position of the hand. The muscles of the forearm are stronger with a slight ulnar deviation. The one-arm hang allows this deviation vs. the 2-hand doesn’t. As a side note, the forearm strength is also increased with some wrist extension, although it wouldn’t play a role here since both exercises allow it. Evolutionary speaking, I’d like to think that our bodies maximized strength through activities such as climbing where there is quite a bit of wrist extension and ulnar deviation, but that’s just a far fetched hypothesis.

Hey guys live the channel but I have a challenge for all three of you guys. It’s called the “Pull Sally Up Challenge”. Put the song on called Pull Sally Up and then when the song says Pull Sally Up you do a Pull Up and stay at the top until the song says Pull Sally Down and then Hang fully extended until the song says Pull Sally Up again. It’s super hard but I would love to see how far into the song you guys can get! Let me know if you think this would be a good challenge because it’s both back and grip strength and trust me it sounds much easier then it is!!!! Hope to hear back from you guys soon!!!!

If you guys decide to start doing dead hangs for finger strength, make sure you engage your scaps during the hang. You want to have your scaps contracted and a hollow body position while doing the hang. Keep up the great content. Love the vids you and magnus do together.

9:15 I suspect it has to do with the torsion in your tendons and arms on one arm from fighting the rotation as you mentioned before - with two arms and added weight the force goes straight down your arm. I suspect it's similar to the difference of a pronated grip and supinated grip back lever - with the pronated grip there is innate torsion in your arm and thus it is easier on the biceps tendons in the elbows. That is why the supinated grip back lever puts more force on the elbow, because your forearm is turned over but your upper arm stays the same (biceps always facing same direction as chest regardless of whether your hands are pronated or supinated, triceps always facing same direction regardless of hand orientation as well).

The downward force adds to be the same but because of the center of mass being different the magnitude is different and requires more ulnar deviation at the wrist to compensate. The pronation is also greater here as well. So overall, you have to work more forearm flexor because the joint action is more complex.

My forearms hurt a lot from doing lots of EZ Bar Curls at the gym with increased weight at the end of my training. So I just stopped doing them to avoid the pain and possible injury. When he hangs with 1 hand I think he's using more of his back muscles, while when hanging with 2 hands he's using his forearms more.

This is surreal the most interesting series i've ever watched just because of of Magnus! You guys could become his apprentices until you guys can manage to climb a mountain or a moderate large cliff, that would be really cool way how to watch you guys are developing during the process! The fact; Magnus are feeling pain in the foremarms meanwhile hanging with a 2-handed grip is because of the pronated grips combined, which adjust/leads your body into a simulated "pull up hang" that are creating higher fatigue / tear in the forearms. Unlike your 1-hand grip, there you are able to adjust your body in a total different way which allows you to "open up" both your chest, back and shoulder.
