Good Friend my first hunt we got a spike. I didn't shoot it my dad did. Anyways it was about this time when we saw our "monster" last I seen he was about 6'7" 250 pounds field dressed and was 14. The care taker of the property has videos him for about 13 year and never him. His dad holds the state record as he was recorded for about 14 years and was about 15. I think it was a 23 pointer and field dressed around 280 or 290. There's another big buck coming round that we think may be offspring

Not trying to sound cocky I have been very fortunate over the years bc of the land I dad bought in the 90s we own 46 acres. On this property I have killed two 10s three 8s and two 6s literally this morning the second weekend of archery I passed up a 6 point I wouldn't call it a monster 6 but it wasn't a basket 6 either I ended up letting him go bc I have realized all of the bucks i have killed I don't think have reached maturity so I hope that 6 point lives on camera we also have a basket 8 which I won't shoot and a decent 9 I might decide to shoot just gotta do more research on determining age of bucks

Really enjoyed this video. Not really understanding some of the comments about the video. This should make us all want to be better managers of the land and deer. Amazing jump after moving the deer. My approach for years is to let the bucks mature and harvest does for meat. My biggest drive lately is to provide more variety for them. This year I’ve plant 4 chestnut trees 7 apple trees 1 crabapple 1 pear tree. Transplanted several devils walking sticks, all of this next to 3 acres of clover and chicory food plot. Mostly cattle farms around me with a little crop soybeans/corn rotation. I’ve also cleared out and fertilized around some persimmon trees. My future plans are plum trees, few more pear trees, few more chestnut trees and dwarf chinkapin trees. I also pulled down a lot of wild grape vines to put it in reach of the deer. I hinge cut several trees too and have several more marked for this winter too. Trying to give them all they need.

Great video. My family has a butcher shop and process deer during those seasons. I see various deer come into the shop but majority are ones that should have been passed up. I compliment people who bag does as our buck to doe ratio is unreal and have to refrain from scolding the ones who are just "horn hunters". I was never sold on a spike will only be a spike. People need to watch this and understand that having mature bucks benefits the herd.

A "yearling" buck or 1.5 year old buck can vary by 3-4 months. Some fawns are born in May, some June, July, even August. So even though they are in the same age group they can vary by 4 months of growing. That's why it bugs me up here in the northeast when someone shoots a small deer and calls it a "yearling" no dude that deer had spots 2 months ago, even born in May and harvested in November that's a 6month old deer at most, maybe even 3 or 4 months old.

Biggest prob with aging deer where i live in the midwest is ive noticed some smaller average body sizes compared to what weve seen in years past. Smaller bodied deer with bigger racks and alot of bigger bodied deer with smaller racks. I know genetics play a big part but it just seems a little off from what weve seen in previous years. We even have a buck thats now been around for 8-9 years. When he first showed up he had one side that was around 80 inches but the other side was a giant spike. So what shouldve been a beautiful 10 point was a six haha. We let the deer alone and just watched him year to year thinking he had been injured and this was the cause of the antler deformity and he would still spread his genes throughout the local herd. Bot dod he ever weve had numerous young bucks now show up with one nice typical side and a spike or main b3am only on the other. At what we figured to be about 7 he finally grew a complete rack that was kinda heavy with short tines but had double droptines and wouldve prob grossed in the140s with7 typical points plus thedrops on each side and when he gained this head gear he totally disappeared for therest of that season so we figured he had been killed. Well that was past year and he just now finally showed back up with a typical 100 inch 8or 9 point rack but his body is gargantuan probably the only legit 280-300 pound deer ive ever seen around my area. Its been fun watching him grow old but ikinda wish we wouldve taken him out of thegene pool years back bit being we only get 1 buck tag its hard to burn a tag on a cull deer especially when there other shooters around. Also like i said weve had alot of small bodies deer with big racks too which will confuse a guy too im talkin bucks thatll dress out around 120-130 pounds with 140-160 inch racks its crazy

I have never in my life seen a spike buck older than 1.5 yrs old. I’ve have worked in the hunting industry for yrs and seen thousands of deer killed. Antler growth is directly affected by deer density and nutrition.... In a perfect world, all bucks would have good nutrition and would all reach their potential but it is not that way every where. I have seen a bunch of buck fawns with spikes and have argued with hunters about it. It’s because we were feeding them good. Fawns that are born late in the year will always be behind earlier fawns until they reach maturity. There are a lot of factors to be considered when talking about correct harvest of potentially mature deer. Also remember that mature females need to be harvested as well... It’s all part of the numbers game that needs to be achieved when harvesting the “right” animals. Deer herds are basically no different than cattle herds. You cull out the undesirable ones and keep the better ones to have a better herd. It’s really pretty black and white these days. Impatience is the factor for most hunters. Let them grow and they will get big! ✌️

Hi Missy - it is not possible to age deer based just off of antler size or point configuration. Genetics plays the predominant role in antler size, and large antlers manifest with age. Bucks are fully mature when they are 4-1/2 years old, but some don't manifest true potential until they are 6-1/2 years old. Best, Dan Schmidt, DDH

Bigger deer = bigger meat. Proper aging and meat handling will keep it tender and delicious. Even a yearling can be tough and gamey if it is not aged at *least* through rigor mortis. For the best quality a deer should be aged below 40° Fahrenheit but above freezing preferably somewhere between 34 to 38 degrees for *seven* days. You can go longer up to 2 weeks depending on your equipment but seven gives the best bang for your buck and can be done in a cooler on top of ice with the water kept drained off, do not soak in water, or in a refrigerator. I prefer ambient temperatures whenever possible if it stays below 40 I will hang for a week with the hide on. Going through rigor converts the glycogen and stuff that causes gamey flavors into enzymes which tenderize the meat and the flavor changes for the better too.

As a biologist I'll say this if you target the biggest bucks with the best genetics smaller weaker bucks will breed your does leading to poor survival rates and eventually..no big bucks. Should be common sense..
