Home Depot sells wire shelving with 1/2" spacing in 6-foot by 20-inch pieces for under $24. They also sell 12" x72" shelves with 1" spacing for under $12. For $86 you could make a bulletproof 6-foot by 20" by 12" tall cage with no bending. That's less that's half the cost of a commercial cage that's quite a bit smaller.

How woul you o the doors, though? And do you need to put quarter inch hardware cloth on them? I have a bunch of shelves in storage to make free (nearly) but I'm not really sure how it would go. Also, do you put those on shelving units or use them as quail tractors?

Have you made something like this, or is this just theoretical at this point? I'd definitely be down to try something like this.

I like these cages. Very practical for indoor use. I built a 3 tier unit using conduit for the legs (4 straight 6' pieces). I used plumbing clamps to attach the conduit at the side corners of each cage and used no other support. Very quick to assemble. You may could use 3/4" PVC for the legs. Also, wheels can be used so you can roll the unit around. The plumbing clamps are so quick and simple to install.

J feeder cut: you could make the side and bottom cuts (only) before the assembly, bending the top flange inward to create a less mess grid design that fits above the j feeder feed trough? Just a thought

Another excellent tutorial video. The center piece is a great idea. I built the layer cages 48" long but with no divider. I noticed the sagging at the front. What you installed is better than what I did. I'll be building a few of these soon. Thank you sir!

Would dropping the height to 8" be too short? If you did 8" front and back and 20" deep, you could do the front, top, and back all out of one piece of 36" x36" 1x2 material rather than having to do the back with the 1/2"x1" stuff. Saves a little money that way. Thoughts?

Any chance you could discuss wire size and guages along with pros and cons? My understanding is smaller spacing (.5x.5?) is better for predator protection and possibly for their feet on the flooring (think guage plays a part as well) but droppings don't fall through as well, might be harder to work with, and more $. I'll try to remember to ask on the next Live as well

Terry, do you take aluminum flashing and make poop guards to help keep the bird's droppings to go down into your collection tray?

You can get oil drip pans at Napa, O` Reilly's, or any other autoparts store. You can buy sheet metal or corrugated metal and cut to size with the cutting wheel. When we raised rabbits, we used sheets of reclaimed corrugated metal roofing, which we would pull out and empty into a wheelbarrow. Super cheap if you can find it used. I recommend the painted kind if you can find it Just to clarify, the metal sheets were on supports that were under the wire floors of the cages.

Would it compromise cage strength if I oriented the top and sides by 90deg. Allowing my to run continuous 1 piece of wire for front back and rear? I maybe like to use .5x 1” c 36. PVC coated wire for the floor

What do you do about the manure trays?

Do you need the special pliers for the j-clips, or can a regular set of pliers work?

Where do you get the poop trays from?

If I'm not sure how many layer cages and how many grower cages I want, would it be best to just do all layer cages? Wouldn't hurt to keep growers in a layer cage, right?

Nice job! QUESTION My wife bought a bunch of 1/4x1/4 hardware cloth, is it possible to use this wire for cage construction, or does it have to be the 1"x1/2"??

The ¼" mesh is great for babies up to about a week old but after that the poop doesn't fall through and gets caked up.

1/4" is too small, you will have issues with the manure building up. Either 1/2" or 1/2" x 1' is your best choice.

How many inches between the cage floor and the manure tray? I would appreciate the answer, so my husband can build the cage for me, THANK YOU!

By bending the floor up for the back it strengthens the floor. Also, I put a small brace in the front to stiffen up the front of the cage.

It would be easier to just make the stand a little taller. I don't like the bottom cage too low to the ground, I have a hard time standing back up. LOL

I understand. I'm 6 ft tall so it's hard to bend down but wanted to make the most out of my small space.

I went to tractor supply. They don't carry the 1 inch x 2 inch mesh coated wire cloth. Neither does Home Depot. Where can I get it? Thank you for the videos.

Terry answered this already in another comment, he said 10-12 quail. However, this is the math for 3 per ft² for maximum: Dimensions 36x20 = 720 in / 144 in (12x12in = 1ft²) = 5ft² x 3 per quail per 1ft² = [Max 15 quail @ 3 per ft²]

Hearing protection, eye protection, and gloves are suggested for safety reasons. Safety First - a quil isn't worth your eye sight, hearing or loss of a finger.

New subscriber here. North central Florida. Not OSHA. Binge watching all the videos. Used those cutoff wheels for years, no incidents. Wife encouraged me to start using the face shield I bought her for weed eating. Started using that along with gloves. Just last month, cutting a small project, with safety gear intact, the wheel popped in half and went flying across my workshop, embedding in my peg board. Just a reminder, they don’t make things like they use to…. 😉Looking for a good leather apron now. God bless that woman. ❤
