I love a cup of coffee and watching your long form woodworking videos on a weekend morning. Great project and I just picked up the plans. Should be a lot of fun to build. Thanks!

Looks amazing especially when most of the planters on youtube are the cedar picket planters nowadays.

All the beaded details really tie this together Jon. I like how some are inset & some are outset. Also the stripes in the thumbnail & outro are FIRE Son!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!

I like to use a 6" long 1/8" bit to chase the pocket hole when dry fit, that way when it's glued up the screw has a path already. Also, never use an impact driver for pocket hole screws, always a regular drill so you don't over torque it.

That style reminds me if my childhood in the 1960’s. My aunt had a dining room table with legs very similar to the ones on your planter.

I absolutely love this piece!! I've bee looking for a project exactly like this and I already have the lumber. I was thinking about adding a copper tray instead of the planter. It's a bit more work and expense but I've done a similar project using it and it's really nice. Having said that: it's a matter of taste, but you're going to PAINT it? Such beautiful wood needs to be seen. You could use a spar varnish and it wouldn't require any more maintenance that paint. Great work!

Thanks Larry! A copper tray sounds great! I’d love to see it when you’re finished. If you’re on Instagram, please share a picture and tag me so I can see it. Thanks again!

Very nice indeed. I wish you could explain how you go about buying the correct amount and size of material you need. I always seem to buy way too much or not enough. I rarely, if ever, see anyone explain the thought process on this. Thanks. Again, great job.

Thanks Chris, I usually use the same five wood species for most projects… White Oak, walnut, sapele, poplar and cherry. This way if I have a little extra material, I use it on another project.

Great work Jon. I;m going to build one out of rustic white oak when I get back in the shop, How about not painting the inset flat panels and hitting them with Halcyon or Gleem? Thumbs up.

  • @JonPetersArtHome

    @JonPetersArtHome

    2 ай бұрын

Thanks Chuck! That would work for a while… But in time would require a decent amount of maintenance. I used Halcyon on the white oak bench. I made about this time last year and ended up painting it black. Just wasn’t holding up in the weather

Would you normally put little bevels on the bottom ends of the legs to keep them from splitting? And/or put little buttons on the ends of the legs to raise them up off of the surface and keep water from getting into the end grain?

What’s your source for exterior pocket hole screws? I can’t find any in 1 1/4”. I’ve made a few exterior tables out of sepele with the zinc plated pocket screws, results are satisfactory since the screws were not directly exposed to sun or rain, but I’d like to be more sure.

Painting it is definitely a shame with all that nice grain. I forgot what you used for the 10th try on your parents outdoor table. Wouldn't that also work if you wanted to keep the wooden optic?

  • @JonPetersArtHome

On that top I used totalboat gleam varnish… easy to use on a flat table top… would be a lot of work on this planter. Also a lot of sharp ends that would be points of failure.

  • @philshock3805

C'mon, Jon. You didn't wet it for the thumbnail ... you were "pre-raising" the grain! 😂 Looks fantastic and I really like the classic design. It's a shame you're going to paint such awesome looking wood, though. I mean I get it (you have enough natural-finish outdoor stuff to deal with), but pine would hold up just as well if painted properly.
