Great hack. I may just give this one a go, but will need to order the amp and BT speaker first. Thanks for sharing! Joe

Great overview but: Can you post the wiring diagram. Which pins from mic and speaker to the ESP32. And the ESP is a standard WROMM32, no S3 or anything?

That looks interesting. I may do a few of these and put my Raspberry Pi Zero 2 Ws running the Wyoming Satellite software (plus Snapcast Client) inside a couple of the Onn powered PC speakers.

Is the far field mic enough? I've seen on some other builds they use a combination of far field and near field mic, I'm not sure how much does that improve the performance, precision or reliability of the voice recognition. Also, what are you using for your HA server?

The mic works OK. Its really sensitive to background noise. I am using a bare metal I7 Machine with 16gb RAM.

Was there a reason why you didn’t wire directly to the aux port on the speaker to keep the full function of the speaker, amp, and controls?

The board that controls the volume and such wont operate without the battery installed. The battery needs to be removed to make room inside. Im sure its possible to get it to work, I just didnt want to spend the time on it.

Just starting out with Home Assistant and ESP32s; would this speaker also work for media output? There would be more automation steps in HA; but after proper configurations, I could also say: "nabu, play spotify playlist ABC;" and would it play from the speaker, or does this turn the speaker into only a Voice assistant box?

This particular config does not have a media player component.

This is exactly what I want out of a smart speaker (for Home Assistant). I believe the best way to do this is with a Pi Zero 2 W running the Wyoming Satellite alongside the Snapcast software so it can do both.

You could get MicroWakeWord functionality with a build like this. Swap in something like a Lolin S3 board with 8mb PSRAM

Im sure you could. I dont know if you can make room for the components inside. Ive not pulled one apart to see. It just seems like a higher monetary risk using one of those though.

@@TheHellis You're talking about the Onju Voice board, if I'm not mistaken. If someone had four or five of the Google Home Mini units, that would be a worthwhile investment because you can't seem to buy in smaller quantities unless you set up a group buy for it. Im not aware as of yet of a counterpart for the Amazon Alexa, although I suppose the basic design might be similar enough to work.
