"Variety is the spice of life." Agree, spices are non-negotiable, must haves, as well as herbs, most have medicinal properties also, so we need them. The flavors they bring out make eating enjoyable. Those small jars are what I use for my seeds, like the paprika. For taco seasoning, combine chili powder, paprika, cumin, garlic powder and onion powder, salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar.

Don't forget the ethnic stores and not only for individual spices. Those stores will have ready-packed blends of spices for dishes that many westerners will not have heard of. Buy a sample packet and try! I've got spice blends in my pantry in packets where I can't even read the packet! I had to rely on the ingredient label in English (a legal requirement in the UK) and look up some ingredients on the internet to figure them out. I opened, sniffed them, made what I thought would be good dishes and decided which I would buy again. It's always an adventure buying ethnic blends of spices or cooking pastes.

Last year my XMas gift package for my grown children was a nice spice kit. It was time to inventory my storage "Spice Bucket" and a local store had all their spices on sale :-). Found some nice spice bottles on Amazon and filled them (as well as restocking my spice bucket) then I labeled as a pandemic survival kit & included as a semi-joke (but not really!): a 2 lb bag of beans, a 2 lb bag of rice, a roll of TP, and a small booklet of recipes gleaned from the internet that used almost exclusively beans and/or rice spiced in different ways. My list of *essential* spices was limited to 15 because that is the size of the spice jar set I was gifting; salt & pepper were assumed to be already on everyone's shelf, GINGER, TURMERIC, CUMIN, GARLIC powder, ONION powder, RED PEPPER flakes, CAYENNE PEPPER, BASIL, PAPRIKA, OREGANO, PARSLEY, THYME, CINNAMON, ground CLOVES, ground NUTMEG. My home kitchen shelf and prepper spice bucket has a wider variety and, obviously, if you have favorites, include them but I also included notes in my gift basket on how to make your own mixes (Italian seasoning, pie spice, taco seasoning, chili seasoning, etc) & substitutions based on the gifted supply: saffron - substitute turmeric, cardamon - substitute 50/50 mix of cloves & cinnamon, anise - substitute cloves (use half as much), mace - substitute nutmeg (use half as much), allspice - substitute blend of equal amounts cinnamon, nutmeg, & cloves, coriander -substitute cumin (use half as much), cilantro - substitute parsley.....

Great idea, to have a specific bucket. I make my own mixes, so have to have a really big Collection. Lol. I use a Dabba for everyday use, & get my Spices & some Herbs in mostly 100g bags from Indian or Chinese stores, which we have a lot of in the UK, they're much cheaper than the little jars. Although the little jars, when rotated well, do keep a constant fresher supply of seasonings coming. Spices that might not have a whiff anymore, can be bought back to life by just heating in a dry pan, to kind of waken them up. TFS this great idea. Take care too everybody. ❤🙂🐶

Your channel is definitely one of my favorites! You do things that most would never do, but that reminds me of growing up as a New England kid with a New England mom! I love OLD BAY seasoning-great for seafood! If I’m steaming shrimp, I use it with celery seed(only need a little) & steam in beer(the alcohol cooks off) crabs you do same way! ( moved to Baltimore, now in FL) My daughter-in-law cooks chicken tenders dipped in Buffalo Sauce then seasoned bread crumbs and it’s great! Spicy! Bacon bits are good to have, too! Jazzes up a baked potato! I always eat chia seeds and a teaspoon or 2 of flax meal on cereal, so I have extra of those. I got a jar of minced garlic in oil at the Dollar Tree, and also picked up some powdered ranch dressing mix. I also like the Saffron rice-throw in some peas and canned chicken with a biscuit or corn bread-yummy. I’m thinking it would also work with ham or maybe some canned salmon. I try to think of anything I can make with just water. Also, I bought a few cans of Italian bread crumbs from dollar tree. Swansons chicken ala king needs more chicken, but Libby’s Sausage gravy over biscuits is great, filling and has a lot of sausage in it too. I count that as a canned meat. Might want meatloaf or beef stew seasoning packets. Those are all my go to’s -chili seasoning I use in stuffed peppers and the tomato sauce they cook in. Also, the gravy mixes. I used to make spaghetti sauce from a 6 oz can of tomato paste and a package of sauce mix way back before jarred sauce was a thing. Just my stuff to share! Oh-something my sons has is barbecue dry rub and lemon pepper marinade for pork. I’m sure it would be great for any meats! He loves all kinds of hot spicy stuff-he has something called Gator spice??? It’s pretty hot-but salty too! He used bourbon BBQ sauce which had a small kick but tasty. Ty, South Florida! Lol

$Tree is a great place to get spices. They have name brand blends that are $4-6 dollars in most other stores.

I actually was working along this in the last few weeks myself. I go to a grocery store that has a bulk spice section that is really super cheap so I stocked up on baking spices and cooking spices. I would highly recommend getting whole peppercorns assuming you have a pepper grinder? They hold the potency in flavor lot longer. I would also get things like pickling spice for making pickles but you can also put in cooking water for corned beef. I've always liked mustard seeds, celery seed, Dill, and Nutmeg (with the fresh nuts) and a small grater. I've been reusing some small glass jars that I already had to put the spices in. Easy to see and you can tell how much is in there

This is such a great idea. I have spices, but keeping them in a bucket and stacking buckets is so much more efficient than spices taking up space on my shelf. This is my next purchase.

You should probably make a list of what you have in there and put it inside the container with the spices and such they will help you keep track of what you got and what you need to replace

Find seeds for common herbs like oregano, basil, parsely, sage, mint...and have a jar for backup. Herbs are easy to grow and they also have medicinal uses as well as making food taste better. Growing garlic and onion takes more space and care than herbs but there are lots of videos and gardening books that can help to do it.

I love Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb seasoning & Table Blend seasoning. I keep the Table Blend in my hospital stay bag. I have been hospitalized several times & just keep it packed & ready to go. I just go into the seasonings every so often & rotate them out. I put sea salt in there too. I never get enough salt with the hospital food. I make my own taco seasoning from a recipe I found in The Joy of Cooking cookbook. I am thinking about mixing up a big canning jar of it & sealing it to store long term. I have a brake bleeder & Foodsaver jar sealer that I can reseal with.

It takes a bit more time, but on every one of my buckets, I write what's in them. But I also write it on paper, then transfer it to my computer file (then e-mail it to myself) and print a nice clear copy out and put it inside each bucket. Then I ALWAYS know :) ANd how many of each also. Love your videos girl..

It’s so nice to watch your videos, even though the subject matter is serious, you present everything with a sense of humor and that helps so much. You put me to shame! I’ve got a spice bucket, but I must have packed it poorly because it seems like yours had more in it! We have a separate bucket for salt but I like the idea of also having he 1 lb. pink salt mixed in with other spices. A couple of things I have in my spice bucket (singular, I need AT LEAST one more!) is cheese powder and sour cream and onion powder. They’re great on popcorn, or to make sauces. And watching this reminded me that I need a whole lot more soy sauce! Thank you!

I have bought cheese powder also, to put in my backups. But, I also use it for my mac n cheese. I have not found powdered sour cream in the store. I would be interested in getting some, even though no one else in my family likes sour cream.

I keep the little packets of seasonibg that come with quick noodles we dont use as I usually put the noodles into a homemade soup. We also have jars of miso paste, abd homemade tomato and other fruit and vegetable powders, vacuum sealed in bags or jars. Chinese spices and flavours such as fermented black beans, soy sauce, and packets of stir fry sauce make plain veg (cabbage) into an interesting meal with rice, as are Indian spices auch as garam masala, and jars of curry paste, especially thai green paste.

Garlic powder & dill weed are 2 of my favorites when I make cheese, & in a lot of casseroles. When I'm doing a pasta dish or having leftovers that look like the meal needs just a little something else, I butter some bread or buns, place on a foil lined cookie sheet then sprinkle with garlic powder, dill weed & crushed basil. Slip under the broiler for a minute or so. It's amazing & could not be any easier & quicker! God bless!

I get my buckets for free. Working at a restaurant has it's benefits. Buckets to store food in and to grow food in. Never thought about a spice bucket. Fabulous idea! Don't forget the bay leaves! Makes meat taste sooo good. If you grow and dry your own herbs try not to ground them. The flavour will last longer if kept whole. Then when you go to use the dried herbs crush or grind them to release the wonderful flavours. So ❤ you channel 😀.
