Build a Jeep JK Overland Drawer System with locking slides for less than $300!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When looking for drawer systems for my 2015 Jeep Wrangler, I found that these systems were (to me) ridiculously expensive. So, I figured I'd give building one a try. Using some locking drawer slides I purchased online, and some 3/4 inch birch plywood to build a custom system... and I spent less than $300!

    Hello! My wife and I are building up our '17 JK as an Overlander and I'm running into the same issue you've had with the storage systems.....too expensive!! We already have the RTT and a Batwing awning but need proper storage. Like you said, it's basically just a couple boxes with drawers. Our fridge is on it's way, and I was browsing the interwebs to get some ideas. Wifey saw me watching your video and proclaimed I'm building your creation lol. So, I maaaaaay send you a PM hahaha. Great video - subb'd, keep up the good work and - Thumbs up from Houston Texas!

    Nicely done! We’re planning to build a system very similar. Very well thought out. Do to an experience I have had, I now always keep my recovery kit and a small first aid directly behind my seat. This last year I put my Jeep mostly on its side, found out my wheeling buddy didn’t have a proper recovery kit. Thankfully I had my kit behind me and was able to reach what we needed. Had I put my recovery bag in the back, where its been before, we would have been in a real pickle. Just a thought.

    Thank you! Yeah, when I am actually on the trails, especially difficult ones, I move a good bit of my recovery gear to right behind the driver's seat. Also, I have a total of 4 first aid packs in different locations throughout the vehicle... you never know when you'll need them.

    I've looked on Amazon for the 500lb drawer slides with no luck, at least matching the blue latching mechanisms to your build. Vadania are the only ones I've found but are not rated at 500. Do you have a part # or link to them? Thanks and great build! Built not Bought!

  • @ADVENTURUSS

    Mark Voisey unfortunately, I don’t. However, the Dimesions for the interior of the JL are quite different, given that the floor and roll bars have changed quite a bit. I can tell you, however, that I built a base plate that bolts down to the factory locations, and then built the drawer section and slider section to connect to the baseplate just outside of those locations. The height is the same as the height of the rear seat.

    2 questions: How does the frig not overheat? Does the drawer box have ventilation holes? (I find it challenging to keep items away from vent hole when packing gear in my Jeep and noticed I almost caught an item on fire! Second question: what did you use to paint the wood black? Or was this stain? Looks very clean and I don’t see brush strokes or spray paint marks. Lastly: did you loose access to the storage compartment beneath the drawers? Or can a drawer be removed to access that area?

    I built the system for my yeti cooler... but yes, the back of that side is 'open', but closes in with the 40% seat, as the back end is cut at the same angle. I also made the dimensions such that all sides have about 2" of space on top and bottom. I used 3/4" whitewood (birch), painted the edges with spray paint, and then used spray adhesive to wrap with speaker cabinet covering. I have a subwoofer in my rig, not a storage compartment, but yes, you do lose access to it, as the bottom is a full plate.

    Same frustration! When i found a dual slide for a fridge-with slide under for a stove, it was $750..that's just the slide setup. So I'm planning a build like yours and still looking for a double slide extension for under the fridge to hold the stove like your cutting board but make it deep enuf to hide a partner stove. Will the slides you spec'd do that, I couldnt tell?

    how is the cabinets when you have the sub working? does it rattle the cabinetry? did you vent the area for the airflow for the sub at all?

  • @ADVENTURUSS

    @ADVENTURUSS

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey man! Sorry for the delay… I didn’t vent, but I did lift the floor by about 3/4 of an inch by placing strips of the birch in “strategic” locations to the bottom of the base. This allowed for the venting, but also bounce-back of the rather heavy cabinet. Truth be told, I really don’t listen to tunes while wheeling, but didn’t want to remove the sub.

    Why does EVERYONE put the stove on the left side instead of the right, next to the tailgate? It seems like you'd have better access to those three drawers, especially while cooking, if the stove was on the right and you didn't have to struggle to get into the other drawers while that's going. I've tried asking many other people this question, but no one has answered. I'm trying to figure out if there's some sort of unseen advantage having the stove on the left for if/when I build one.

  • @ADVENTURUSS

    @ADVENTURUSS

    To be honest, I don't have a straight answer for you. I know a lot of people have a tailgate table for their Jeeps, and put the stove there. I don't have one, so I wanted to build a slide-out 'table' to maximize space. To each their own, though!
