    I dont think social media would have been good to the show. BTVS is good because social media could not sway the storylines AT ALL.

    Not so sure about that, even before social media they(tv shows in general) still cared a lot about public opinion, stuff like killing off unpopular characters was not uncommon. They still got fan mail, loads of fans wanted them to kill off Riley and Dawn, they did intentionally try to make Dawn less whiney because of it. The show was also heavily censored by the network, probably far more than it would have been by social media. They originally wanted Cordelia to be black, but the network thought an interracial relationship between her and Xander would be too controversial. It also took a long time before they allowed to show Willow and Tara kiss, Josh had to fight extremely hard for that.

    At the 18:34 mark, they talk a bout a sort of reboot but with a different slayer. Benson mentions that the new slayer will be a person of color. I thought "Buffy"was well defined, because wasn't the slayer (from Jamaica) of color, wasn't the principal's (DB Woodside) mother a slayer and of color, and a couple of the "Potentials" of color?

  • @sdab4856

    @sdab4856

    3 жыл бұрын

    True! But it’s not the same as having a main character of color. When all the main characters are white and only the secondary characters are people of color it doesn’t really shine a light on the characters/cast of color, which is why having a main character that’s not white would be seen as more diverse than what Buffy originally did. It’s just more about who gets the spotlight. :)

    @@sdab4856 The Buffy character was based on a sort of "Valley Girl" cheerleader type and the race was just based on that type. Now here they want to just base the character on primarily the race? It will be interesting to see how the new Bat Woman works out. Now if they base the new Slayer on say an WNBA player of color, that might have some potential.

    @@liamroscoe596 Well, that's the first thing they mentioned of the new slayer, she will be black. In the original, the slayer was defined as kind of a ditsy blonde cheerleader. That's the last thing you would expect a Vampire Slayer to be and that is what made the character interesting. Not coming up with a good back story first and just mentioning the race of the character, makes the back story look hardly important.

  • @liamroscoe596

    @liamroscoe596

    @@dttruman that does not answer the question about the character being based on her race at all. they arent writing the show theyre speculating. theyre talking about maybe having more diversity the second time around why would they sit there and come up with a full on character profile. do you think when they envisioned buffy to be white they were basing it off of a race? why can they have the preconceived idea of the character being white and youre fine with that but when they mention the character being black youre picking it apart? it seems you have some backseat prejudice and would like tv to remain whitewashed.

    Definition of virtue signalling: the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue. These actors are not ‘virtue signalling’ if you know the actual definition. They are not expressing these thoughts to convey their moral superiority. They are being asked questions about their feelings regarding the show and they are answering them honestly. They’re not saying these things for the sake of their own popularity or image, they’re saying them to spread awareness and inspire change. If you have a problem with treating the environment with respect or casting a diverse group of artists on a show so much so that you would shame people for choosing to speak up for what matters. That is your problem. Deal with that. Also if you’re not a real buffy fan (who appreciates diversity and real issues being addressed) go elsewhere.
