    I'm a building engineer and I find it really funny when people say "a wooden power rack will never hold up" and I ask them what their house is made out of and how long it has held up. Usually, they feel dumb. We build houses out of wood. Our roofs are held up by wood and not magic. That power rack is so overbuilt you could park a bus on it and it would hold. If anyone wants a good (overbuilt) power rack, this is the one to build!

  • @HaasGrotesk

    @HaasGrotesk

    @eric williams It scares you because you're not using logic. You are using feelings. No one cares about feelings because they don't determine if something is going to hold. Logic and science does. That fact that you say "no bodys slamming weight against your house 100 times a day. And houses take maintenance" shows that you don't have a basic understanding of what you are talking about. A house is constantly under stress, For example in areas where it snows you can have several extra tonnes of stress coming and going throughout several months and we haven't even started talking about what wind and temperature changes do. The small areas between the holes may "scare" you because you lack the understanding of how a structure works.

  • @HaasGrotesk

    @HaasGrotesk

    @eric williams What have I built today? A tunnel under a city. Can you do that? Didn't think so. You don't know what you are talking about. Wood rotting. Ever heard of treated timber? You're talking about 6x time strength this 5x strength that. This material that material. It doesn't matter. What matters is the geometry. And yes, I can weld, I can run a mill, I can run a CNC that's basic stuff. Doesn't impress anyone.

    @Rude One Steel isn't necessarily better than wood. In a burning house, what is better? Wood or steel? You would say steel and you'd be wrong. But that's not the point. I honestly don't know what you are talking about because I never said wood was better than steel when it comes to a power rack. I simply said that the rack they built is overbuilt and will hold up no matter what you throw at it. So the point you are making is... Pointless.

    The best piece of equipment I built was the BUFF dudes bench. Everyone is hiking up the prices since gyms closed on benches from $200 and up. I made mine for 40.00 from the HD "damaged or returns" bin and used an old mat for a cushion. I got a faux leather sheet from an upholstery that they didn't want anymore for free. I also liked that test you did of your stand alone squat stands. It gives one more confidence in the builds as does how many others have built your designs, especially this rack. I really enjoy the diy stuff.

    5:15 I'd think the dudes are not giving the rack enough credit there - 3 - 4 hunndo lbs? That's gotta be a gross underestimation. The 4 x 4's can handle a lot of load - probably easily over 1000 pounds even if you consider all the drilled holes and such. Perhaps the weakest link might be at the J-cups? Anyways, good to see it stand the test of times. When I buy my own house, I'll definitely look into building a rack of my own. Big ups!

    I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the kzread.infoUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B

    DIY Duke, I just want you to know that back in 2016, my son and I saw your video on building the power rack. I won’t go into any details but my son could not go to the gym anymore during a time period. My wife and I love him so much and wanted to help him. He loved working out !! We undertook this build and in my area I had to use yellow pine. It worked fine. I didn’t have an electric drill so the holes were the biggest time drain with a cordless drill. It came out great and we added the cable system and pull down bar. It was a lifesaver and it still is going strong and as good as the day we built it !! God Bless You DIY Duke !!! You made a memory that will last forever !! When I show people the pictures they are amazed and always think it’s made out of steel.

However, if I were to build it again, I'd use 2x4s or 2x6s doubled up instead of the posts. Most of the 4x4 posts in my neck of the woods are warped. They're also mostly heart wood, which isn't the strongest. I had to wrangle a lot of pieces into square. It's woodwork so you can't avoid that but there's at least a chance to make 2 ok 2x4s into a straight beam. With a 4x4 you got what you got. I also had a difficult time finding plumbing pieces that fit exactly the right length that the screws would hold the flanges at the right distance. So I used 2 8 inch straight pipes, epoxied them vertically into a double stacked 2x4. Kinda like a plug but side ways. And I 'plugged' that into the holes in the rack and just used an old clamp to hold it on. Very clunky, but very strong.

    I first watched the build video when you first posted it. I was new to lifting and only had a screwdriver but told my wife "I think I can do it!" Finally, 2 weeks ago, I made it. The only mods/additions I made were wood glue, less holes and, a couple pieces of 2x4 with two pipes each through them (for added strength) as j-hooks. Thanks for the videos!

    I really appreciate the videos!! I have a 14 year old son getting ready for his first year of high school football. Because of this lockdown stuff, I built the Buff Dudes rack about two weeks ago. The build went well. Going to attempt to add two things: pulley system and rack system for the plates. Again, I really appreciate the videos!!! BTW-also used your video on the jump box.

    Built mine a month ago, and I absolutely love it! My whole family uses it. The only difference is I placed my multi grip pull-up bar in the middle of the rack. Also built my own weight stand with leftover lumber. I made a cable pulley system too, for back, triceps and biceps. Thank you for sharing this idea with the world!! 💪🏼💪🏼

    Instead of mounting the pipe across the top in the front, I got two pieces of black pipe with a coupling and two pieces for the middle it’s pretty much self-explanatory and I mounted it right in the middle of the rack so do you have a regular white grip pull up bar, and a narrow close grip so you could do a pull up also I’m trying to figure out how to add pictures to this but it won’t let me

  • @bf6cro

    @bf6cro

    Dave Mullins Everything I bought from my local hardware store. It’s pretty much self-explanatory, but some cable clamps but a tree saver tow strap to put around the top, bought a couple of carabiners and measured the steel cable that has a plastic sheeting on it. Search for it on KZread and there are many ways of making your own cable pulley system to do back arms etc.

    I have a powerrack outside in the garden so I can workout and get a tan too. Powerrack , a barbell and some weights is all you need to train. Also you can use the powerrack to do bodyweight exercises if you add some parallel dipbars on it. Use it for pull ups, dips, triceps extensions etc

    Just finished building my own power rack. I used my own design, but it's videos like this one that inspired me. Unfortunately weights are hard to come by so I'm pouring concrete ones for now.

  • @johncalvo1743

    @johncalvo1743

    That's awesome! How do you estimate the amount of concrete for a certain amount of weight? Are you making round ones or square? Are you using any form of rebar for tensile strength?

  • @Marcus-id5ur

    @Marcus-id5ur

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@johncalvo1743 seems to be about a 10% loss in water weight, maybe a little less. So If I pour out 49 lbs of wet concrete into a mold I'll have a 46 lb weight in two days. Found a 15" oil pan for 45s, home depot bucket for 25s, paint bucket for 10s. 2" pvc pipe for the center hole. If the weights are off a little when i'm done, grind some weight off with a 50 grit polishing pad. Definitely using rebar to add strength. They aren't turning out perfect, but it's better than the alternatives right now I guess. Hardest part is trying to get the PVC pipe centered, definitely have some lopsided weights.

  • @johncalvo1743

    @johncalvo1743

    @@Marcus-id5ur That's great! Really, the amount of weight doesn't matter as long as the two pieces weigh the same. So you are using buckets and oil pans for molds? How do you remove the molds when done? Is it fairly easy?

  • @Marcus-id5ur

    @Marcus-id5ur

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@johncalvo1743 the plastic buckets are super easy. Seriously takes about 30 seconds. Just tip them over and bang on them a few times. The oil pan is a real pain. Especially as it gets used more and beat up. Lots of banging with a mallet and the ground trying to shake it loose. Seriously might take 40 minutes each time.

    I built one three years ago. I love mine. My only complaint was mine is slightly bending in which makes removing the adjustable bar a bit difficult. Totally my choice of timber which was probably too soft. Not enough to affect anything structure wise. If I rebuilt it today I'd just add more of the support sections you put on the vertical pieces on the insides to make things stay more square. Great piece of equipment and essential to any home gym I will have from here on out.

    Built mine 2 years ago, holding up great. Thanks, Buff Duke! And great work raising these fine boys. Totally agree about the satisfaction of building your own. I squat and bench in the 200s, no issues with strength and stability of the frame. You do have to be careful about drilling your holes really straight, some of mine are more work to pull the pins in and out of. I don't have the low ceiling problem, so I put my pull-up bar in the center top rather than right up front. I added a bottom 4x4 piece in front to improve lateral stability. Duke mentioned all the mods that different people did. Maybe there's a video in that, I'd love to see them all.
