Budhaditya Mukherjee: Raag Bhimpalas

Музыка

Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee began his second set at the FEA-curated The Diwali Concert Series 2016 with a wonderful rendition of Raag Bhimpalas. He was accompanied by the very talented Soumen Nandy on tabla.

He is not flamboyant like VK or SPK of his gharana, but weaves pattern like NB. Bhimpalashi is a melancholic sandhiprakash raga. Naturally it is Panditji's forte. Just listen to the alaap, how sadness drips from his strings like Vidushi Aswini Bhide singing "Birha".

Very similar approach. Nikhilda from Maihar imbibed Imdadkhani technical brilliance. Budhaditya meets him midway from the opposite side, having Maihar sensitivity added to Imdadkhani training. Incidentally, the gold standard of Bhimpalashi in instrument is by Nikhilda.

This is a beautiful performance of Bhimpalasi, indeed. The leisurely elaboration is not his usual stlye, at least not the one I am familiar with. Maybe Panditji got more conscious, more serious in the last couple of years.

The style of play is quite unlike what I have been hearing since the last few years, also the Sitar jawari is more open than the closed sounds of previous years

He's always been great. Please listen to his Malkauns from 1987, with Abhijeet Mazumdar on tabla. The recording is not of studio quality as it was a live performance, but the depth, breadth, profoundness are clearly seen and heard. His rendition is one of great alacrity, precision and speed in the latter portions. Aalap is pure devotion, surrender and oneness! One of the best if not the best Malkauns !! Here Bhimpalasi is also of a similar caliber.
