I purchased this mic several months ago and used it for a couple of podcast episodes.I too find it a good, usable mic with excellent build and audio quality, particularly given the budget price. My voice tends to be sibilant, so for those recordings I needed a de-esser. Other people's milage may vary. I don't know if you had the extension tube for the desk stand sent to you, but in my kit they added an extension tube that raised the mic and it's supporting tube about three additional inches above the base stand,. With that extension, you can use a book or similar item to get the mic near mouth level if you're using the desk stand. For the new podcasters or for a co-host / guest, this is a worthy option. With an inexpensive interface, you're set to go for less than a $100.

I did get the extender tube. I think that's a nice add on. I could have also raised my desk but I rarely use that feature. BTW, what's your daily driver? I don't know if I've asked you that before but I'm just curious. When my keen listening co-host says a mic sounds good I definitely take note. He was shocked that the mic was only $44.99. Thanks for the great comment.

@@FreePodcastTools To your question, for the past couple of months I've been using the SE DynaCaster DCM8. Prior to that for about three years my primary mic was an EV RE320. I will also use a Shure SM58, Zoom ZDM-1, the King Bee (original) and a few other mics from time to time. I like to test various mics so I have far more mics than I need. It's an expensive vice, but it's a hobby I enjoy.

@@StephenCarterStressExpert that's an excellent collection! I will have to try the DynaCaster DCM8 at some point. The look initially put me off a bit but I've only heard good things about the quality. Owning too many microphones is my super power. LOL! Thank you for answering my inquiry. Now my curiosity has been satisfied.

I have inserted the PD100 into my podcasts and people are stunned by the quality and price. But the Barkinator says there's another mic that will catch my ears more than the PD100... Coming soon... :)

Keep in mind that I listened to this in studio, so I'm hearing things a bit different than most. It's seems rather bottom heavy, IMHO, and when you get in close enough for the proximity effect to kick in, it becomes a bit uncomfortable. The presence sounds a bit thin, as well. Or, to answer your question, there is definitely $355 of difference to be heard compared to an SM7B. It also sounds like it could have benefitted a bit from some cut in that 400Hz "mud" range. I was able to find a frequency response chart, and there was a distinct boost around 100Hz and little rise around 8K, so what I heard matched with the specs. However, the difference I heard between the two preamps also suggests that it what I heard may be, in part, the interface as well as what works best on your particular voice. I've certainly heard it on voices where it sounds quite nice. Even in your case, it's fine unless one is already familiar with your voice on other gear. That's the thing about mics. You *HAVE* to match the mic to the voice and the preamp. I've had voices where a C414 sounds harsh and brittle. Especially, when used with Yamaha preamps and their slightly brighter characteristics. So, none of my critique is to say that this is a bad mic. I don't think it is. But its application needs to be matched properly and it could likely benefit from a bit of EQ. All told, this is one of the few

  • @FreePodcastTools

Interesting take, Raul. I can definitely see what you're saying about the boominess but I tend to prefer that for my particular voice. I didn't hear the thinness but again different listening environments. I will compare it to some other mics in that sub $100 price range like the Zoom ZDM-1, RODE PodMic etc. When you refer to Samson mics are you including the Q9X? The SM7B is renowned for being flat. Its strength can sometimes be considered its weakness when it comes to tone. I love the SM7B because it's more of a neutral mic and I don't get sibilance on my voice when using it. All said, I think the PD100 is a solid mic especially at that sub $50 price point. I definitely value your thoughts because I know the ears you have. I'll keep using the mic and do a bit of EQ on it to see if I hear what you hear. Thanks for the great comment.

@@celebril I like how you put the "weakness can be a strength". I said that verbatim in a video coming out today or tomorrow that you haven't seen yet. LOL! OOPS! I may have cut that out due to the length of the discussion as it wasn't part of the video's topic. We think a lot alike though. I found it to be really good on my voice without any EQ. It's not too hard of a mic to drive with an audio interface. -54dB sensitivity which is about 4dB harder to drive than the Fifine K669D. So depending on how loud you're trying to get without post production it can be used without a mic booster. For videos I'm usually in the -23dB - -20dB range. If you need to get a lot louder then you would need to boost in post so the UM2 preamp doesn't have to get pushed to max gain.

@@FreePodcastTools I love my M1 MacBook Pro and Mac mini for editing, handles 4K footage, and have yet to even hear the fan come on. It’s inability to play well with others regarding certain gear is the only frustrating thing about them. Especially Blackmagic equipment, certain capture cards, and now the UM2. But you can’t beat the price of M1 and M2 Mac minis compared to their competitors.

@@levelupwithmikenewman my PC chokes on 4k footage for the most part. I have to use proxies and reduce the timeline playback. Honestly I need something small that can run OBS so when I record, my videos sound cleaner without the PC fan noise. Even if I have to transfer the file over to my PC for other stuff that cleaner recording would be worthwhile.

Now we need a wide array of budget interfaces that truly outperform some of the top brand names (not including Behringer in that category as they are a brand name). Thank you for commenting Dale.
