Budget Crosskart Reverse Gearbox Install (Harbor Freight Predator Big Block) KJ Raycing VF-1

Ойын-сауық

**** UPDATE!!! The gear box did NOT slow the kart down any!!! Somehow the jet came lose in the carb; terrible timing! Update video coming soon along with a little surprise, KJ Raycing style 🦾
Wanting to add reverse to the Budget Crosskart VF-1 Safari Mode, I found a gearbox on Ebay stating it could handle up to 18hp, it looked beefier than the standard 212cc gearboxes and is sold by reputable company (Blast LED). So I pulled the trigger on a $300 reverse gearbox option and this is how I mounted it. Now figuring out how to mount something is a lot different than seeing how it's done and replicating it; so I hope this helps you guys with your projects and I am definitely loving all the VF-1 builds going on. Having reverse on this crosskart makes me want to hit some trails and it's just in time as the weather gets better here. And I'm prepping all my karts for the Busco Beach trip and can't wait to see you guys there!

    I bought a 15 to blank sprocket took it to the machine shop and had it bored to the same as the 520 sprocket's hub after they turned down the 529 teeth. It had a slight press fit then the two were welded together (one bead of weld on each side). I searched everywhere for a replacement sprocket that would convert it to 420 with no luck. I thought about removing the output shaft and having it turned down to 3/4 with a key way so gear changes would be super easy. I may still do that in the future!

    A 40 series doesn't maintain belt alignment unless you flip the primary engine pulley around. Also the spring in the driven pulley is directional depending if you face the spring side inward or outward which also determines which way your primary needs to face to maintain alignmen throughout the speed range of the system

  • @RomoRooster

    @RomoRooster

    Жыл бұрын

    It works the opposite of a 30 series, in a 30 series the stationary or flat side of the pulleys are on the same side, on a 40 series the stationary side of the pulleys need to be opposite sides from each other to maintain your belt alignment throughout the speed range, your belt will last a lot longer if you maintain belt alignment

    One of the clutches should be turned around to keep the belt aligned as it goes through the travel. The 30 series clutches are asymmetrical, one side of the clutches and belt are flat, so the same side moves on both clutches. On the 40 series, both sides are tapered, so opposite sides need to move to keep the belt aligned. From some reason, the instructions for some 40 series seem to show both moving parts on the same side, some instructions are actually correct showing them on opposite sides. Maybe the incorrect ones are just that the Chinese copied the design without understanding the design. Watch the belt alignment (in neutral) as the clutches travel through their range, you'll see the problem. This will cause major wear and power loss at higher speeds. The secondary clutch uses ramps to downshift with more torque. Your clutch has dual ramps, so it will work both directions, but the torsion preload in the spring will likely work better in one direction. Therefore most people flip the drive clutch.

  • @M.TTT.

    @M.TTT.

    Жыл бұрын

    I had a manco dingo 13hp that came with the clutches installed like he has them and it worked - definitely doesn't seem ideal though, but it'll work until you start to have way too much power I suppose. I wonder if running them like this though, while wearing the belt faster, you may be pulling it tighter than the proper orientation, maybe less slippage? maybe negligible though. And yes, there are 2 spring types for the secondary depending which direction you run it.

    @@KJRaycing Yep, I am new to your channel, still haven’t watched all your videos. I’m not new to the basics of CVT’s. Every snowmobile and ATV ever ever made, where they have done the Engineering, has the moving parts of the CVT on opposite sides to keep belt alignment. Even the Chinese ATV’s I have worked on have been correctly oriented. I’m glad your setup is working for you as is. There is very little info on this on KZread. Hopefully someone will post something. I can’t step up at this point as I only have access to the 30 series asymmetric style, and ATV style for slightly larger builds (I have 2 old Polaris chain drive transmissions with high/low/reverse). If I get a 40 series I’ll contribute to the community also. Thank you for what you have shared, this is an amazing amount of info that my son could use for building his own. I compensated for the gear reduction 10/60 to 12/40 so technically it should have been doing burnouts with a reduced top speed. The gearbox makes it feel like I’m running really big heavy wheel and tires. I just put the crosskart tires back on now that the snow is gone and I’m going to do a little cvt tuning before I upgrade the motor to get a solid baseline for that gearbox. Thank you for the comment, I kind of like trouble shooting and this is definitely and angle to look at.

    There are a lot of factors to that question. The main one being an upgraded ungoverned engine. I’ve gotten up to about 45 on the stock 3500 limiter. If you’re willing to sacrifice burnouts and low end fun or get the motor to turn 5-7k rpm you could probably get 60 or 70 out of it. A combination of both could get you more.

  • @KJRaycing

    I think a car starter motor could be more complex… you have to find a matching flex plate/flywheel to mount to the rear end, a bracket to hold the starter motor, tuning and aligning the bendix and getting the perfect gear mesh to not destroy everything when you use it. This gearbox is probably cheaper than the R and D plus parts of a starter motor reverse. But yeah, clearly you have tons of experience with it, right?
