Budget Breakdown (Ep. 16) No Debt and $10k in Savings at 26! Frugal Fit Mom Podcast

This week, Christine and Dave analyze the budget of a 26 year old woman who is currently in great financial standing, but is just beginning the process of earning her masters degree and also needs to purchase a new (used!) car by the end of the year. The Frugal Fit Spouses urge the woman to minimize her "fun" expenses and prioritize savings in order to reach her big financial goals.

Great job! One thing I thought of was that maybe part of the "fun money" or the automated savings was for the categories mentioned on the second whiteboard. If so, make sure you keep some of them in your budget. Once again, great job and best of luck with your masters.

Note to self: do not try and put my 3 month old son back to sleep, he WILL wake up just to watch Christine. Wasn’t sure about hubby, doesn’t hear him in the cooking/shopping videos we watch. But instant smile for Christine’s voice. He is cranky with me because I paused it to write this comment. Back to the video. Thanks for the video guys. Hello from South Australia 🇦🇺👋💕

Point of clarification: bonuses are WITHHELD on as supplemental income, which does mean that the withholding is higher than normal wages. When you file your taxes they are considered the same as any other regular wages and are taxed accordingly.

Thank you for doing this, Christine. I'm 58, but if I had had you when I was 26 I would have been in much better shape. As it is, I left work at 35 with no savings and a crushing amount of debt because my son was autistic but undiagnosed and I broke under the stress. People were calling me a bad parent and doctors were saying, "He's fine, it's just because he's your first and you don't know what to expect. Had I known, I would have hired some part-time help and gotten on with it. Now, living on a pastor's salary plus my disability retirement (I have fibro) , we are paying off $320 a month in debt and have barely enough for bills and will only have my disability plus a small amount of retirement income from my husband, to live on. Kudos to you for doing your part to make sure it doesn't happen to new generations.

I used to sneak snacks into movies. However, in my area, you now have to have clear bags that are checked. It is very hard to sneak anything in. My husband and I plus the dog spend time walking every morning. We just enjoy the quiet, the sunrise, and the time together.

Once she meets her goals, she might consider putting at least part of retirement savings into a Roth IRA so her contributions can double as an emergency fund and retirement savings, AFTER taking advantage of the employer match which is essentially 100% return on investment BEFORE compound interest. Doing that allowed me to jump start both my retirement and emergency savings after a divorce and I still managed to retire at age 60.

That's some serious self-discipline for savings! Good job! One lesson I've learned with savings is to name every single dollar in your savings account, either in a written/digital budget or "buckets" if your bank offers that. Every time I look at our bank account I feel like we have a lot of money... which makes me comfortable with overspending. BUT, when I look at our written budget that names all of those dollars (car insurance premium, car insurance deductible, home insurance deductible, Job Loss Fund, Summer Road Trip, etc. ) then I don't feel like we have extra money and I don't overspend. It's a shift in mindset that makes a big difference!

Nice job picking up on missing expenses. Please note that bonuses are NOT taxed at a higher rate; the tax withholdings are higher. They are taxed the same as her regular income. It would be interesting to see what she typically receives as a tax refund. My guess is it is in the $1,000s. If so, I recommend reducing her withholdings by completing a new W-4 so her refund is closer to $0. This way she has access to her money all year long instead of a forced, interest free loan to the IRS.

Always a pleasure to see these budget breakdowns and have you weigh in on things as someone who has lived the experience and continues to do so. Always great to have Dave's thoughts on things as well! It does not resonate with a lot of us that there was entertainment money because with large families and low-paying jobs, entertainment was playing outside or perhaps going to a movie once in a while but mostly just hanging out with family and friends!!!😂🎉 It wasn't as boring as it sounds
