Buddy Rich Disneyland 1985 "Bugle Call Rag"

Музыка

What can I say? It's Buddy Rich and it's Bugle Call Rag! Are there already plenty of videos of B playing this chart on YT? Undoubtedly. But one can never get enough of Buddy Rich playing Bugle Call Rag! More is better!! (Especially when you have this uninterrupted, perfect view of those magical hands.)

    Hi Cloudview, Barry Bangemout® here... As with all your BR posts I've been watching since you first posted, this one is truly amazing and one of my favorites, along with the 60's version solos. However, with this one, I enjoyed getting the opportunity to specifically concentrate on watching his hands, especially the all famous left! Like some of the other posts have alluded to, he's not moving around the drums as much, as he gets older, it's understood, but his snare drum technique is still unparalleled by no other, and there are many great , great ones out there! The angle that it was shot was perfect to watch and learn and no less marvel on the way Buddy performed. This was/is a real treat for us drummers no doubt! If there is one thing I have in common with Buddy, is that I too am a snare drum fanatic, which will become apparent when you see my videos. I owe everything about drumming to that mortal man. For he was the one that propelled me that next level more than any other drummer in my career. Thanks Cloudview! P.S. Was that you screaming in the background LOL!

    I too owe everything about my drumming to this incredible mortal man. When I was a teenager and only into rock music, my father kept insisting I should check out his Buddy Rich jazz records. When I finally did, I was totally blown away! I could not believe the perfection and beauty of what I was hearing. Changed my drumming life. From that moment on I studied carefully Buddy's records and later his videos. If you want you can see and hear me drumming back in the 90s on KZread. Just do a KZread search for: "Buddy Rich technique & style by Cloudview" and also "Cloudview747 on the drum kit." P.S. That isn't me screaming in the background on this video - but if I had been there, I might be yelling in excitement too! Buddy could have that effect on you, of total excitement and exhilaration.

    The idea that Buddy didn't move around the drums as much as he got older is preposterous. Depending on the tune or solo, Buddy was all over the kit. Sometimes he stayed on the snare. The "older" thing is way out of hand. Buddy actually got better as he got older!

  • @BarryBangemout

    I agree, as he got older he got "Smarter" and didn't have to play as HARD as he did, he stated that publicly. I think that's what we're alluding too. No disrespect to the king was ever intended. Believe me, I met Buddy, spoke with him at length, and have been humbled and honored to have met him. All the best. Barry.

    A perfect example of how an audience can get worked up if you do it right. Most drum solo's tend to send the public to the bar. When power passion and talent come together drum solo's will always ignite a spark in the audience.

    Words can’t describe the amazing level of genius of Buddy Rich. I’ve been a drummer my whole life and as I got better it just gave me a glimpse of the next level of Buddy. Being able to understand the significance of what he was playing. All I can say is there are a lot of great drummers. Buddy, to me, is #1 there is a huge, huge space to # 2

    thecccstl: thanks for recording these i love the close side view. The right side is the best place to watch the hands, especially the incredible left. Buddy plays the entire solo on the snare gradually increasing the speed and intensity to mind blowing levels. Is that you having your head explode off to the side, great stuff, thanks to cloudview747 and you.

  • @TheCCCSTL

    @TheCCCSTL

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yes, that was me. Sorry for the profanity but it seemed appropriate at the time ;D. The fact that Buddy played that entire solo on the snare drum is just another indication of how truly incomparable he was because you kind of expect to hear him play his solos around the whole kit and to have him do it just on the snare drum and yet create that level of excitement is uncanny. No one else can do that and I'm not apologetic when I say that. The solo just builds and builds in technical complexity and intensity and when you think he's reached the maximum he can do, he takes it up another step. Its tough to describe it in words. As I mentioned on the other videos that I recorded that night, I did it specifically as a drum lesson so to speak. I didn't care to show the whole band, I wanted something I could watch at home and learn from because it was an unobstructed view of his hands. You never got to see that on things like The Tonight Show or Mike Douglas Show, especially the Mike Douglas show with the director using all those psychedelic effects in the old days. It was very distracting. As a drummer I wanted to see his hands and what they were doing. In retrospect, though, I wish I had widened out my shot a little bit so that you could see what he was doing on the bass drum as that is a very integral part of his playing.

    I've watched this over 100 or 300 X now I've honestly lost count I think I need to have my eyes checked it's soooo unbelievable ! It's like Johnny Carson said it appears to be an optical illusion or some kind of optical trick but we all know it's not ! My new favorite clip and I'll add this which may not be obvious to most people - I've played along with this clip and after the solo, the time/tempo is so perfect I actually rush it not being that great a pro musician but Buddy and the band plays it in perfect time. I'll work on that. It's just another walk down the street for Buddy ! SMH

    I am SO glad you like this as much as I do! And we are all VERY indebted to TheCCCSTL for videotaping this performance. I think it is quite possible that many years from now there will be young drummers (the ones smart enough and perceptive enough to recognize the genius), who will study this important video, because TheCCCSTL wisely filmed it stationary on a tripod, allowing the viewer to clearly see what B is doing.

    This is my favorite version of this tune. Until I saw this, my favorite was Buddy's original version off of Big Swing Face. Pretty incredible arrangement compared to THE original that Benny Goodman and others played in the 1930's. It was written and 1st recorded in 1922. The tune was popularized as a standard in renditions by Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. Duke Ellington, The Chocolate Dandies with Coleman Hawkins on the Saxophone, Ted Lewis, Cab Calloway, The Mills Brothers, Peanuts Hucko, Eddie Lang, Merle Travis, Bill Monroe, Nat Gonella, Syd Lawrence, Abe Lyman, Ray Noble, Earl Bostic, The Washingtonians, The Victor Military Band, Glen Gray, Meade Lux Lewis, Teddy Wilson, Johnny Dankworth, Muggsy Spanier, Harry Roy, Billy Butterfield, Doc Severinsen, Pete Fountain, Red Nichols, and Al Caiola.[3]

    I saw him so many times at "Carnation Plaza Gardens" right off DIsneyland's Main Street. A year or two before he died, after he'd had a quadruple bypass surgery, he was taking it a little bit easier, but still kicking ass. At one point about 45min into the set, he hadn't soloed yet. So I yelled out 'open solo! Louis (bellson) would do it!'. I thought it was pretty funny as a 15 year-old kid. Buddy did not, he just glared at me for a few seconds. Good times. RIP master
