Well said! Buddy was the greatest drummer that ever drew breath! There are some come close but I’ve never seen anyone better. He was a genius!

My Mom used to scold me because whenever I knew Buddy Rich was gonna appear on Johnny Carson, I’d sneak into the living room, to watch!! One of the absolute legends!! 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

Oh how true. I still remember being just a young teenager in the late 60s and hearing Buddy for the first time on 2 albums: Swingin New Big Band and Blues Caravan. Talk about "never forgotten!" It was life changing for me. Completely changed my direction as a young aspiring drummer. And here I am, so many decades later, and 34 years after Buddy died, still marveling and appreciating.

Sick, sick, sick...what an incredible performance. No musician or athlete has ever performed at this level for so long...a gift to us all.

And as I have said before, it gives ME great pleasure to see how much interest there is in Buddy even after all these years. Glad I can be a part of making these vintage videos available for all to marvel at, and for young drummers to study and learn from.

Been watching Buddy since 1971. The stuff he does on the hi-hat...kills me every time.

Great arrangements. And for anyone who thinks Rich was all about flash and speed on his solos, I suggest going five minutes in to a short one with the bass player. No razzle dazzle, just solid ideas.

Definitely the greatest ever.The best that's ever been and the best that will ever be.

Legend has it that audience members 3-400 feet back felt Buddy’s sweat! Very young Eric Miyashiro on lead trumpet. He followed my extremely gifted Berklee classmate Tony Gorrruso, in that chair.

I was very fortunate to have seen Buddy and his amazing band quite a few times..in clubs and at concert venues...he was absolutely mind boggling in the total command he had over his drums ! You knew you were watching genius when he played ! No one could drive a band like Buddy !

No doubt! He truly was One Of A Kind.

I was very fortunate to have seen this very band With him during this time In Fort Collins, Colorado. In my opinion, This was the best band he ever had, or played with, and the arrangements were unbelievable. Not only that, but this old set of Radio Kings that was restored, was the best I ever heard his drums sound. That 24” bass drum was like a bomb, And yet so musical! Both he and this band were 100% at the top of their game!

When I used to see Buddy live, it was so grand that I thought it would last forever. I never took photos or anything. I shook his hand once in a small club in the San Diego area. '82, I believe. Ludwig then. A very kind man off stage and a beast on stage. God bless these videos, and God bless the Cloud Miester!

His movement around the drums (crossovers, etc.) seemed to become much more effortless as he got older, IMO.

I was a kid..(about 10y)...now I'm 49.. when I saw a bl/wh movie (don't know the title) with a crazy awesome drum-solo from the Master himself...I didn't know much about music or instruments but only thing I know is...I was blown away...I never forget it in my life...many times asked myself who that incredible drummer was...and now I fanally know...thanx alot for this nice upload... greetz..from Europe

Bass trombonist is Jim Martin who played on the extra board with the St. Louis Symphony and wa with Buddy for about 3 years. Fine player and nice guy. Still playing and teaching.

Today's date is 2 April 2019. I remember what happened on this day in 1987. The entire world lost the greatest drummer who ever lived. Nobody can match Buddy's talent, NOBODY!! David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock island, IL.) 2 April 2019.

Here's an Aaron Copland quote about Mozart, that I apply to Buddy Rich: "He tapped the source from which all music flows, expressing himself with a spontaneity and refinement and breath-taking rightness that has never since been duplicated."

Outstanding! Rejuvenating my love of the Buddy Rich Big band and of course Buddy Rich. My dad brought home a pair of drum sticks and Swing'in New Big Band, that was what? 1967 or so? Buddy was the ONLY thing I tried to play on drums till about 1975. Refuse to waste my time now with Gregg Potter doing drums. NO FEEL. Thanks for all these video's!

cloudview747 Ya 1966, but i got it in 1967, up until then all I heard was Glen Miller etc, my dad loved the Big bands, and because it is all I heard when growing up, I related to what Buddy s band was doing as Big band, but a Big band that cooked!

I have been a BR fan for an eternity. It is great to see these clips, it's the only way I can enjoy & get my BR "fix". There are drummers today who don't even know who he is. I buy & sell drums, I had a set listed as in the BR configuration. A buyer e-mailed me to say ," What is a BR configuration"? I sent him a clip from you-tube & he writes back simply, "holy shit". Yeah, holy shit is right. Thanks again for these clips.

+cloudview747 - Someone recently came to the house, and went down to our "drum room" to watch him play. When they commented "they couldn't hear the music" his response (with no prepping of my own, I swear) was " I am the band"...Never laughed so hard in my life...The person he said it to had no clue why I found it so funny....My elder son (now 10) has his favorites - Basically Blues and Mercy, Mercy. He got his 1st Slingerlands a few years ago - set up in the traditional BR/GK set-up.

Amazing view for the band. Like they are flying over the city. Things like that did not distract Buddy. He was a rock.

My God 68 years old and doing that. The technical skill you have to have to be able to pull those things off that he was doing is just incredible. And about this racist thing. Buddy has played with just about every Jazz Superstar of that era most of them being black and if he was a racist they wouldn't have even let him get near them regardless of how he played. He idolized Papa Joe Jones and I've seen several pictures of Buddy giving him a big hug. After reading Papa Joe Jones's biography, if Papa Joe would have even thought Buddy was a racist he wouldn't have let Buddy within a mile of him. Al Gray the master trombonist was a very good friend of buddies and was a guest soloist with Buddies band several times. And I could go on and on. The thing is, if he was a racist it was something that he could have not hidden from the jazz music world and nobody, nobody would have played with him.

Count Basie considered Buddy a “son.” Rich also cancelled an entire South Africa tour because his black bassist wasn’t granted a work visa.

I got to see him at Disneyland Carnation Plaza Garden around 1975. I was 15 and got his autograph before the show. When that 12 piece brass section fired up it blew my mind how loud and cool it was. I was hooked. Of course buddy was mind boggling. I knew he was a great drummer but as I have watched and listened became every more of a fan. He was incredible to watch and I am still impressed every time I hear him blaze. So fast!

Today 105 years ago GOD was reborn , he came to Earth as a child prodigy then went on through his time here to become the greatest Drummer who will ever live Not only that he was the greatest technician in music and probably the greatest of all time . Those of us lucky enough to see this phenomenon will never forget it . My own feelings are the day he passed I lost my mentor , my inspiration and friend Happy Birthday Superman

In every Buddy Rich video I've watched, there is some guy out in the audience that yells out "YAH BUDDY!!!" . I always wondered if it was the same guy who followed the band to every show throughout the 70s and 80s. Nevertheless, Buddy Rich will always be my greatest drumming hero! RIP BUDDY!!!

me and a pal fixed up a really nasty Buddy in Toronto around this time. The herb was truly primo for that era , as im sure half the band would also atest too, Bamboo Club in T.O......Lets just say Buddy played like a whole different dude after intermission. lmao. Then to top the night off i had the pleasure of introducing some of the cats in the band to the amazing horn man Guido Basso, who for them, was like me being introduced to Buddy...One of the highlites of my existence so far.....I thought it was pretty cool that Buddy was still hauling away at 67 or so.....peace

An excellent band, two years before he passed away. it's sad to see Barry Keiner on piano, a great talent, who died a year after this performance, from a heroin overdose. Not sure why Bill Cunliffe was not there. Buddy once cancelled a performance in Africa when his bassist was denied a visa. this may have been that bassist, or perhaps Ben Brown from an earlier band. lastly, the cameramen never knew how to film Buddy. the best position, to feel the intensity, was in front of the drum kit, raised above the small Tom, to capture that incessant left hand.

Barry died on the band bus 0n I-40 east of kingman AZ. Jeez that must have been horrible!!

cloudview747 strikes again. If my memory is correct, I recall that first number from a video at Disneyland (also on KZread), possibly also the same year. In that clip, during a short drum break, he played a seemingly impossible fast single stroke roll between the snare and small tom. Took my breath away.

+erzug I am so glad you mentioned the Disneyland 1984 video and that particular drum break!! On Paul Hemmers post entitled Buddy Rich Orchestra 1984 the break comes at 2:55-3:00. Those 4 or 5 seconds are for me - and it sounds like for you - the highlight of the entire Disneyland 1984 concert! Its almost beyond belief. Mind you, Buddy would turn 67 years old in 2 weeks!! Its just insane!! And yet, that was Buddy. Year after year, right to the end, he would surprise us with incredible things we had never seen before from him - taking our breath away once again, as you say. What a powerhouse force he was. What an incredible musician of seemingly infinite innovation and creativity. Thats why we all feel the way we do about him even after all these years. He was truly One Of A Kind. By the way the name of the song is Wind Machine.
