Buddistick vs Hamstick with aluminum screen ground plane

I decided to do a fair comparison of a buddistick and a hamstick. Both are coil type antennas.
I used the aluminum screen ground plane instead of radials.
For it's design, quality and compactness I don't think anything else compares to the buddistick. I really believe it would be the one I would choose, if I wasn't running QRP.

A recent article suggests inserting a 200-400pf cap to ground. They evidenced a lowered SWR.

Thanks for another good one. I appreciate the comparisons you've been doing. I got the 213" WRC whip at Hamvention last year and love it. I use it on a mag mount, on the tripod and on a stake. It's really easy to switch between bands too--I pretty much have the number of sections for each band memorized now, LOL.

I'm sure the long whip will be pretty good. I've got some other comparisons coming.

Loaded verticals have lower impedance, and the better you make the counterpoise system the lower the total impedance, so the SWR goes up a bit unless you use some impedance matching such as a multiratio balun. The single wire counterpoise on the buddistick is a lossy counterpoise system, it is chosen for convenience rather than ultimate performance. Wolf River coils use stainless steel wire, also lossy but it makes the SWR lower. Many SWR lowering tricks are actually lossy and less efficient, so beware. Any SWR below 2:1 is fine, don't fret over it. If you are using an antenna switch to select between them that ties both ground systems together and distorts the comparison as well. Have fun!

I haven't tried the "screen door" ground plane yet, but I use my MFJ Hamsticks & the same ground stake you have there almost exclusively for 20 & 40m POTA and with no problems tune down to a 1.08-1.20:1 regularly.

I’d try more than one of those screens. You’d have gotten away without punching a hole in either of them.

Thanks for the comparison. Personally, I used 2 sections of aluminum screen jumpered together. I "lightly" sprayed plastic dip from Walmart over both sides of the screen, except a section were the jumpers are connected. The plastic dip helps Keep the aluminum screen oxidation to a minimum but you'll may get some around the connection points. A Wolf River Coil, a home brew 80 meter coil , and mfj 17' telescopic antenna are used in the field with a ground mount or tripod were used for my portable ops. Transportation of the screen is a major concern for me. I do use a piece pvc pipe with the screen rolled up in it with screw on caps

I've settled on 4 radials with a silicon wire that has no memory and doesn't tangle. Banana plugs to attach it. Video soon.

@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS silicon wire is amazing. Did a freeze test during winter when it was 20degF and still stayed flexy and no memory.

All that land and all those trees. I’d have phased delta loops up. High flat dipoles and beverages. Qrp needs effective antennas for sure. Maybe a 70’ tower with a momo beam 😂

Faraday fabric works just as good as the screen, maybe better and fabric is easier to transport. I picked up faraday fabric 43 inches by 118 inches for $27.27 with tax on Amazon

I've seen where people sew that stuff to a piece of cloth to make it more durable. I might have to think about that.

QRP and compromise antennas don’t play well together in general. Maybe only if you are on a summit or in salt water. QRP needs an efficient antenna. Portable antennas need 50 to 100 watts for reliable operation. I have had good luck with ham stick on a paint pole 12 ft up and a single wire radial. If you are not going to use the ham stick mobile, then replace the set screw with a thumb screw of the same gauge and thread pitch for easy SWR tuning in situ. Don’t put the whip too far in, it must be isolated from the coil. For quick deployment drive a rebar stake in the ground and lash the pole to it with Gear Ties or similar. 73, just my opinion, NF1A.
