Buddhist Karma & Rebirth Explained

The law of karma and rebirth is one of the bedrock teachings of the Buddha. It is also one of the most problematic ones. To some, karmic rebirth seems like outdated superstition. It ruins the image of Buddhism as a rational philosophy of life. Within the Buddhist tradition too, karma and rebirth raise difficult questions. If the Buddha taught only the no-self doctrine or karma and rebirth, everything would’ve been fine. But he insisted both that all things are without self and that there is karma and rebirth. Now, if there is no self, what gets reborn? And if there are no selves, how can you or I, or anyone have karma? And how does karma pass over from one life to the next? And does karma suggest our lives are predetermined - that there is no free will? If so, why does the Buddha teach us to put effort into improving our lives?

Your view about no-self is wrong. Buddha never taught that "self does not exist" or that there is "no self". The main discourse about NOT-self is Anatta-lakkhana Sutta . Buddha taught there is noting permanent, unchanging to anything, including our "selves". But he never said there is "no self". So all this gymnastics in explaining karma in the "absence of self" is simply ignorance.

Many forms of nowadays Buddhism is mixed with certain explanations of Jainism and Hinduism. By the time of Siddhartha Gautama those two religions were there in ancient Bharat as main stream religions. Buddha didn’t accept those. If so he would’ve easily become a priest in those. He refused the Aathman (soul- self) concept and he explained why it’s Anathman (non-self) he explained the emptiness (shunyatha) in all kinds of Universal attachments as they’re all changing and not firm (Anithya). Thereby the eternal unchanging satisfaction can not be found in those worldly encounters (dukkha-dissatisfaction). Everlasting satisfaction is an energetic state that has got no entanglement with the worldly encounters that is nirvana. There’s no person as in a soul or a self that attains nirvana. It’s kind of an energy transformation from around 30 different types of forms of subconscious energies of mind into one last form of energy that doesn’t change into any other form due to universal entanglements. In other words there’s no entanglement or attachment 🙏

@@shubhamreddy5684 certainly. First, saying “enlightenment is…” when one is not an Arya is ridiculous. Only sotthapana and higher have an understanding of nibbana, that is plainly pointed out time and time again. Second, the rest of that statement doesn’t make sense and is just an attempt to sound poetic. Rather than concerning yourselves with the subject of this video, which is ultimately here to get views and likes, you should instead read the suttas and try very hard to understand right view. The path begins at right view. Until we have attained right view we are just uninstructed worldlings as the Buddha put it. Buddhism is not about mysticism and magic or poetry and being clever. It is about seeing things as they truly are. The Buddha said on more than one occasion that all he teaches is suffering and the cessation of suffering.

Before I start I want to say that this video is absolutely great and I don’t want to downplay its value. Speaking about “spiritual teachers shy away” they do because the food for the mind is not the path. It makes you think yes, does it liberate you? Quite the opposite, it hardens the shell that is supposed to be cracked and eliminated leading to enlightenment. Pondering is not the way. Although I agree, it’s very interesting to understand these topics, but only if you remember that it’s not the objective of the seeker, the objective is a no-self and practice of meditation is the method. Eightfold path is a favorable condition that is conducive for the stable unshakable and rightly directed meditation practice

When someone explains the concepts of Buddhism and someone wants to understand the core of Buddhism it’s advised to start with Kaalama sutra where 10 important facts are explained how to get the right approach in experiencing the truth of reality rather than believing anything blindfolded. We need to know that the words Karma, rebirth, reincarnation, Aathman (self), effects of Karma in your next life etc etc were discussed in Hinduism and Jainism too with different explanations and some of those came into Buddhist scriptures lately when certain guys from Hinduism and Jainism joined Buddhist monk society in the past and tried to include their beliefs into Buddhism. Actually according to Buddhism there’s no rebirth or reincarnation of self or Aathman. It says that you and every other being is ‘non-self’ (Anaathman). Therefore there’s no rebirth or reincarnation of oneself. Yet it explains the continuity of reoccurrence of energetic systems (Bhava) so ‘Punarbhava’. That’s energy transformation and energy transition with reinstating of it within one’s mind and the intellect is explained in it. In Buddhism it’s very clearly stated that Karma is the intention of your mind. ‘Chethana’ - intention of mind. In fact all karma is a work of mind and by the body, memory associated mind and words can bring about an action followed by this intention of mind only. Then and there the result can be seen. This is nothing to do with any so called past or future life as described by Hinduism or Jainism. Buddhist karma explanation is simple and straightforward. Nothing is hidden. If you carefully observe/examine how your mind works with mindfulness you may see the Karma your mind brings out as the intention and you may see the result too. (Cause and action too) It’s important to study your mind and how it functions by observing on your own to realise the truth of fundamental reality of life and its emptiness of good & bad (yin-yan), plus-minus, like & dislike etc. Samsara (Sankara) or the recollection of taking things as world/universe/existence that feeds our mind as thoughts is not the reality of what it seems to be. By understanding this reality and practicing the path to review and recover wisdom that’s concealed by relative truth, ultimate truth of reality can be seen/understood. Real wisdom (enlightenment- attaining Nibbana) is lying within us covered with relative reality so that an ordinary being with limited ability of mind may not discover it until he or she is willing to get into this correct approach to think upstream crave for experimentation of mind & intellect for wisdom.😊 -please note that it’s so important to filter out those contaminations found in scriptures inserted by different people over a long period of time from Hinduism & Jainism which are also different other mainstream Indian philosophies yet vastly different from Buddhist philosophy and the path.

I’ve been on a deep journey to the true nature of my existence for about six months now. Left absolutely everything behind. There’s a new world deep behind this reality I’ve been getting glimpses of my whole life that calls to me. It’s made me unhappy with everything that would make others content: relationships, jobs, family, delicious food etc., yet this mind keeps grasping at strands of this reality as if it’s scared to let go, while the most meaningful part of me is ready to drop away. I can’t seem to cut the threads completely. Your videos have helped me conceptualize so many things, as well as the Mahāyāna Dharma and Sutras etc. but specific advice on my particular situation might be of further use. I suppose also it’s just gonna take time and patience. Thank you so much for everything, Seeker🙏☸️

Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. 🙏 I was actually just reflecting on the concepts of karma and dependent origination over the weekend. From my readings of some suttas (and thus my limited understanding of the Buddha’s teachings), this is what I understand about faith and karma: In Buddhism, faith (saddha) is not blind allegiance to a figure or doctrine but a reasoned trust in the Dhamma (Dharma), the Buddha’s teaching, which emphasizes an investigative process akin to the scientific method. This process is grounded in direct observation, analysis, and verification, leading to insight and wisdom. Key Buddhist texts, such as the similes of the rhinoceros and the elephant’s footprint in the Pali Canon, illustrate this approach, emphasizing the importance of a methodical and intentional inquiry over mere dogma or tradition. This investigative spirit is mirrored in the scientific method, where faith lies in the rigor and integrity of the process rather than in the personalities or institutions behind it. Both approaches value the collection of facts and the systematic analysis of variables to arrive at truths. This parallels the complex understanding of karma and dependent origination in Buddhism, which involves untangling the web of causes and conditions that shape existence. Understanding karma within this framework is likened to the delicate task of removing a stone from a pond without disturbing the water-a metaphor for the nuanced and careful examination required to discern the interplay of actions and their effects. Just as scientists use precise instruments and methodologies, Buddhists employ skillful means (upaya) to navigate the path towards enlightenment, employing the Dhamma as a guide for ethical living and spiritual development. Buddhist faith is a confidence in the path laid out by the Buddha-a path characterized by rigorous inquiry, ethical conduct, and the development of wisdom (the Noble Eightfold Path). It is a journey that requires patience, meticulous attention, and the right tools, both for understanding the complexities of karma and for achieving the ultimate goal of liberation. Again, my reading has been limited and so my understanding of Buddhism is even more limited. I wanted to share with you my reflections on this topic. Thank you for putting this video together to explore this topic. 🙏

I appreciate the intensity of the research and the material. I take from it what makes sense to me and what makes me live a better life. That is core. Also, we need not get into the intellectual understanding but rather just stick to the principles that we need to understand and apply so we may be liberated. I listen to material over and over and sometimes from different perspectives and in the end, I stick with what makes sense to me and helps me on the road to liberation. I do "get" the principal of no self and also of emptiness - and the road to liberation & how to actualize & realize those experientially. We want to make sure not to get "hung" up in the concepts of it and make it into a dogma. Just to learn, understand and apply.... enlightenment is when the emptiness wakes up from the dream that is you... that gave me chills, super powerful phrase. The more I study and understand the more I understand that's true. It's strange something I struggle with is fear of that emptiness, like I can feel myself holding onto myself for fear of acknowledging that emptiness.

I love your voice, it's so soothing, and your explanations clear. Your video brought me to a place of fear that I find interesting. On "free will": If there is no self, who is there to have a will? What makes it free? Who or what says you have possession of will? What happens when we let go of the idea of will? I think I might inquire into that some time.

Thank you, I'm glad the video affected you in a way you appreciate :) On the relationship of free will, the (no-)self, and fate, I'll be exploring this in an upcoming video comparing Nietzsche's idea of eternal recurrence with Buddhist rebirth. It is a fascinating topic...

  • @krzysztofwos1856
    @krzysztofwos18562 ай бұрын

The way I see the question of Free Will is that Dhamma is basically about minimizing Free Energy. Buddha gives you recognition and generative models so that you can effectively minimize Free Energy. FE, in this context, is a technical term-it's the amount of energy/information that's available to you to make good use of. It depends on your model of reality. The better the model, the more Free Energy you can use. Imagine a child on a swing. If you have a good model and can predict the position and momentum of the swing well, you can add to it, causing it to swing farther and farther away. If you miscalculate, you will suffer the consequences. That's literally what feeling the flow of karma is like. If you can sense the gradient, you know that you will suffer if you do this rather than that. So you have the choice to suffer or not. Which, of course, is not much of a choice. So, when the "objective function" becomes transparent to you, when you understand the issue at the meta-level, you abandon Free Will as a childish concept. There's always the right thing to do where what's right is defined as the most optimal way to act given the circumstances *and* your beliefs about them. This means you should constantly seek to adjust your beliefs to improve your assessment of your circumstances. The endpoint of this process seems to be becoming a Daoist master. "The master does nothing, yet leaves nothing undone."

In the past I tend to assume Buddhist middle path is between Hinduism and Jainism but now I realize that it might better be explained as between Ajivika denial of free will and Jain denial of predeterminism. I believe this relevancy of maintaining both free will through current karma and its effect from past karma predeterminism is compatible with Christianity. I am a subdeacon in Byzantine Catholic Church and a few days ago Pope Francis invited Buddhist monks and told them we need one another no one is saved alone because we're saved together. Meister Eckhart talked about returning to the ground of existence and how God and ourselves are one and the same in the level of ground of existence. This explains Maximus the Confessor aposkatastasis in Ambigua 7 that our final theosis is not heaven but to transcend that by becoming God ourselves. This is similar with Buddhist view that all sentient life has Buddha nature dormant waiting to be awaken. Hopefully despite of our religious differences we could communicate and maintain respectful dialogue with one another.

An analogy I use (or dare I say the way it may actually be amongst the waves of the electromagnetic spectrum) for predetermination and free will existing along side one another is music. Predetermination can be seen as a set of notes echoing on from the last 'playing' consciousness (consciousness in matter) and free will is the ability of that consciousness to rearrange those notes and even introduce new ones, as consciousness and the 'music' are one and the same - like a record player that can also create and engrave records.

Great job! I always enjoy your videos. Let me just highlight that nature laws are just a special case of the law of karma. I've been thinking about consciousness lately as a "force" since a force "explains" how objects interact each other. It is a complex way of interacting though. The stone can't choose falling, while conscious beings can. I hope this make sense.

In order to understand rebirth we need to shift our perspective. Our perspective is centred around the strong belief that what we experience exists. It exists, but only for you. Others experience the world in the same way, but that is inferred by you because of similar behaviour by others, your experience can never be shared by another person. Now when you die, it is someone else in whose perspective you are no more. But from your perspective, there is no evidence whatsoever that you don't exist anymore.

This is fascinating. So we are an energy that reappears in other forms? I saw interviews with yogis, these people who meditate for years… some 30-40 years, by themselves in caves. They can remember their previous lives. One yogi could remember being an animal. I have so many questions I’d like to ask a person like this. I do some meditating. I am in much better spirits when I meditate. It’s amazing how I can let go of so much anxiety about the world. My father had severe depression & he meditated for 2 years , the transformation he went thru was incredible! Then he stopped & eventually became very depressed again.

Beautiful. I like the analogy of either seeing the forest and missing the trees or seeing the trees and missing the forest. It makes me think of a quote from Heraclitus, ‘the road up and the road down is the same road.’ Up and down would be conventional truths which lead to karma and rebirth- to know there is only one road is a universal truth which leads to grace and nirvana.

You are absolutely amazing at producing this insightful and exceptionally clear content. I'm wondering...would you make a video regarding the issue of Love & nonattachment *specifically regarding Buddhist liberation. I know you already made the wonderful "Christ & Buddha" video (thank you!). But now I'm contemplating something related but also distinct regarding these ideas. So, sages throughout history have advocated Love as the highest, the unseen/underlying essence of all of existence, and as a primary route toward eventual awakening (e.g. "Love is the key to all" and whatnot). But there might, or might not, be some conflict here with regards to detachment. What is the ultimately best path toward awakening-- immense Love for the world, approaching every moment with Love and gratitude (those sages say this Love itself, alone, is the best catalyst for progress and eventual liberation)... or is it better to align with detached emptiness, as to be completely neutral toward all of the phenomena in life and not *adding* the "emotion" of Love into the picture? I suppose they don't have to be mutually exclusive, but I'm wondering if I should be engaging in/pouring out this Love I have to the world, or just *be quiet,* watchful, and discerning as a way toward Liberation? Any thoughts? Once again, thank you so much for this incredible content. It means so much. Cheers :)

Up to now, I have found your channel to host the most serious discussions on Buddhist philosophy. However, Gautama Buddha was one of many protesters who stood up against the caste system of the Vedic tradition in ancient India, or what is often referred to as Hinduism. He sought to find an alternative philosophical understanding of rebirth. The ideas of rebirth and karma are two intertwined principles that have influenced millions of lives, particularly during the late Vedic period or the period of the Upanishads, which coincided with Gautama Buddha's existence. I share these facts to provide context to what you have presented. If possible, try to draw a contrast between the development of these ideas in the Vedic era and in Buddhism, to offer insight into the period of fierce intellectual debate between these two schools of thought.

I sometimes think that we can get too far ahead of ourselves when when we get into the self and not self teachings. I believe the moral nature is an important part of our existence and that karma and rebirth give people a guide to that nature and if understood properly can improve their own lives and the lives of other.

I quite enjoyed this presentation, with only one caveat: To translate the Sanskrit word 'vedanā' as 'feelings' can be quite misleading. Preferable is 'sensation', which is then categorized as either pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. For most modern English speakers, at least, what is thought of as 'feelings' largely belongs to the saṃskāra-skandha, which is the appropriate category for the complex mix of our human emotions, with their inherent tendencies towards either approach, avoidance, or neutrality. My two cents... Anyway, thank you for this video!

one way i like to view karma is through the Four Noble Truths and the nature of delusion of time: karma means acting with an expected outcome, which is delusional because the future isn't real. wanting reality to be what it is not, anticipation, expectation or any sort of perception of a potential outcome can be considered fear or desire. the Noble Eightfold Path addresses this by essentially telling the practioner to try using "reduce suffering" as the main intention. this only works if the practitioner lets go of time and focuses on the present instead, because no matter how well you conceptualize suffering, if you want to understand the basis of that intention you ultimately end up with no other option but to deeply look into the present moment, the moment where suffering is. therefore, causes, conditions and intention of the current action merge until they fully align and there is naturally a deep insight into the self, reality, etc and no longer a dualistic division between actor and action. hope this makes sense

It was even more obvious after I took psilocybine mushrooms 😅 Even if I really saw everything is one, the spinning part is disturbing, no top no down, no start and no end. I don't see the problem with the karma and rebirth. Everything is one but you have to face rebirth until you realise the self is a lie. Always sounded logical to me but hard to explain
