Welcome to Budapest walking tour 2023.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It's actually two separate cities, Buda and Pest, which are divided by the Danube River. Buda is known for its hilly terrain and historic Castle District, while Pest is the flat, bustling urban center.
Budapest is known for its "ruin bars," which are bars and clubs set up in abandoned buildings or courtyards. Szimpla Kert is one of the most famous and pioneering ruin bars in the city.
The Budapest Metro is one of the oldest in the world, dating back to 1896. The Line 1, also known as the Millennium Underground, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest electric underground railways on the planet.
In this video I invite you to a walking tour in the Pest side of the city.
We start at the stunning Hungarian Parliament. The Hungarian Parliament Building is one of the largest and most stunning legislative buildings in the world. It has exactly 365 spires, representing the days of the year, and is constructed with over 40 million bricks. You are going to see the building from all sides.
We continue the walk along the Danube Promenade and visit the Shoes on the Danube Bank. The Shoes is a powerful Holocaust memorial consisting of 60 pairs of cast-iron shoes placed along the riverbank. It honors the memory of the Jews who were shot into the Danube during World War II.
Then we turn a bit back and make our way to the Liberty Square, a significant public square located in the heart of Budapest. One of the prominent features of Liberty Square is the Soviet War Memorial, also known as the Soviet Liberation Monument. The Soviet War Memorial is a symbol of the Soviet Union's role in the liberation of Budapest from Nazi occupation. Liberty Square is also known for its architectural diversity. You can find several significant buildings nearby, including the United States Embassy, the Hungarian National Bank, and the historic Hungarian Stock Exchange building.
From here we head to St. Stephen's Basilica, one of the most iconic and important religious landmarks in Budapest. The basilica is dedicated to Hungary's first king, St. Stephen, who was instrumental in converting the Magyar people to Christianity and establishing Hungary as a Christian kingdom. His preserved right hand, known as the Holy Right Hand, is kept as a relic in the basilica and is on display for visitors.
Then we pass the Elizabeth square with the Budapest Eye Ferris wheel and explore the Vörösmarty square, known for its Christmas market.
We continue our walking tour along Váci Street, one of the most famous and bustling shopping streets in Budapest. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, historic architecture, and a wide range of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes.
We end the walk at the Klotild Palaces overlooking the Erzsébet Bridge.
