One of the few remaining rail shovels and possibly the only one to be fully operational

Machines like these gave the United States the edge in digging The Panama Canal. Many thanks to Bucyrus Erie of Milwaukee. Without those steam shovels they probably would be working on it, today. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Amazing old machines, before the internal combustion engine came along most things were powered by steam, cars, motorbikes, machines like these, locomotives, there is a steam shovel on tracks not rails not too far from where i live, doubtful it will run again but maybe hopefully!

diese rauhe technik, schier unzerstörbar. man merkt dem gerät an, dass es jederzeit nach schmierung wieder in gang gesetzt werden könnte und abermals erde ....... baggern könnte... faszinierend! lg.ff.

Where was this filmed? This is the type of steam shovel used in the early days of iron mines on the Mesaba iron range in Minnesota my Grandfather was a fireman on a shovel just like this one!

So what happened to all those steam shovels just like this one that dug the Panama Canal at the time this was built? I wonder if this could have been one of those and it was repatriated to the United States? If not, are there any that were? I imagine that early models used digging the canal got very hard use, probably 24/7, but they probably had quality maintenance and repairs as well. It would be interesting to hear the history of one of those shovels that worked on the equivalent of the American moon shot of the first half of the XXth century.

This is not in the US, it is in Australia, and was not used on the Panama Canal.

The ones used to build the canal, were left. They're at the bottom of the giant lake.

Too bad they've replaced all the chains with cables. Of the thousands of these that existed worldwide only about one of each make still exists and only two that I know about are in running shape. So far as I know there are five of this type of shovel left in the world. This Bucyrus in Australia, a working Osgood in Rollag MN on the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion grounds (converted to wheels), an Atlantic on static display at the Minnesota Museum of Mining in Chisholm, MN (converted to tracks) one on static display in upstate New York, and one in a field in Alberta, Canada.

Well I’m an industrial mechanic, I think that chain has a massive amount of wear and many sandy miles grinding through it.
