Buckdance Lessons - Episode 1 - Hillary Klug
In this episode, we're answering the question, "what is buck dancing?" I explain a bit of the history and define many other traditional Appalachian dances. We'll look at videos of other dancers to get a sense of the many variations.

I love this and seeing you dance! My daddy, from Tennessee, could do this dance and tried to teach me as a kid. I couldn’t quite pick it up but I love watching, and hearing you do the dance.
I had no idea you were the national champion until now. I can’t even begin to describe how completely unsurprised I am to find that out lol
Hi Hillary ! God Bless you girl.... you are so talented and smart !!
Hillary you have got to be the most boot scootinist Buck dancing little lady ever! I love watching you dance and play your fiddle. You've got some brilliant talent young lady. This message is coming from way out in the outback in Australia 🌏🦘.

I Love You Hillary Klug ❤❤
My favorite video is your playing Bonaparte March... Love you dancing too 👍👍👍
Oh My Goodness, all these years I have been calling it "Buck Dancing" for when the Buck Moon is shinning! 🤪
I'm glad you posted this. I will re watch it while I wait for part 2. I took a flat- footing/ clogging class at a folk music school years ago. I was 1 or 2 men in the class and for this subject, I was not as quick a learner as the rest. But the scenes of men over 70 buck dancing gives me hope. So does the possibility of not having to be choreographed, as in the clogging class, where I was often afraid of messing things up for the whole group with a wrong move.
They are divine🌸
It's so interesting to learn about buck dancing, clogging and flat foot dancing. I am sharing your videos!
Ah yes!! So glad I found this! Thank you for making these lesson videos Hillary!! Now on to lesson 2!🎉
Its buckdancing but I've known that forever but cloging is new to me. I think i learned it when i was a little girl growing up in the 50,s and watching old musicals from back then.
That's awesome👍👍👍
Just being able to get to know you a little better is worth a lot, your passion and talent is fantastic, hopefully it is contagious I know for me I get energized just watching and listening!
I wanna learn this. Just got my shoes. So extatic.
Watched this on Facebook a couple of days ago, but enjoyed seeing and hearing your talk again! Looking forward to your next video, Hillary.
So glad to see you again! I really loved watching the video, how could I not. You were smiling ear to ear and very lighthearted, such an infectious smile. 😊 It is so obvious how passionate you are about buck dancing and I think that it is really cool that you make these videos to share it with all of us. Can't wait til the next one. Take care and God Bless. 😊 🙏

This is just a very special person with loads of talent!!! 🎻💃👍🪕
It's all right. I told everyone that I want everyone in northern and southern Utah to be doing this by next year.
Thanks for this explanation, Hillary. I always wondered what the difference between buck dancing, flat footing, and Appalachian clogging was. Many years ago in Boston I did rapper dancing, which is a kind of English sword dance that incorporates some simplified Northumbrian clogging. (See kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGyBz6aekqaXisY.html for an excellent example of a team dancing rapper.) While I know that Northumbrian clogging is a very different tradition than Buck dancing or Appalachian clogging, I thought you might find it interesting to see one of the best Northumbrian cloggers I've ever known. His name was Tony Barrand. He came from England, but came to the U.S. for college and lived in New England for the rest of his life. He eventually got a job as Professor of Folklore at Boston University. And he also performed English traditional music with John Roberts, someone else who'd moved from England to the U.S. for college and stayed here. Tony was also an amazing dancer until he was afflicted with MS. He passed away just last year. There are videos on KZread of when he was in his prime. There's a good one at 6 min. 49 sec. into kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2Sex6eCh7S-dZs.html. It's a different style than Buck dancing, but just as you describe with Buck dancing, it's about using his feet as part of the music more than about high kicks and showy moves. A few years after I started dancing rapper, I moved to Bloomington, Indiana and I assembled a rapper team. One of the dancers was a woman who'd done Appalachian clogging with the "Apple Chill from Chapel Hill" cloggers in North Carolina. So we also practiced clogging and eventually did some performing. But we were never as expert at it as you are at Buck dancing. Your ability to do that while also playing fiddle just makes my jaw drop in amazement every time I watch one of your videos.
Very nice, looking forwardeds to see the next video. Good Luck bless you
Beautiful young lady , awesome dancing 💃
Wow wow wow that was so awesome you are truly the best i love you!!! Man
I'm from north Ga and go to Oktoberfest in Helen Ga every fall and they got some good cloggers up there. You should play there next year.
What an amazing video, you explained it so well 😍
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What an interesting and informative video this was! THANK YOU for helping me achieve my goals for each day which are - learn something new every day and do something kind for someone every day. This was so enjoyable.❤
Wonderful!
I’ve only recently found your videos on buck dance and I’m hooked! There are some fast feet out there. 🥰
I didn't know what champion you were until now, but I have been watching your videos on KZread for years! Thanks from 🇨🇦 !
I was raised Indiana rural and never heard of buck dancing. This Appalachian dance wasn't secret, just not widely known. The Internet and KZread spread the story and you sre one of the leaders. Due to the many other KZread dancers I fully expect that non English speakers world wide will adopt it as another aspect of American popular culture. I am waiting for enthusiastic German youth to form clubs for "Buck Tanzen".
I love your style. I've seen taps screwed onto sneakers in my time! You could git someone to lay some on a pair a boots so you too could transcend the "categories". You just made me realize that I do buck dance. I trained in tap but my style is rhythmic and could stand on it's own like a percussion accompaniment. It's much like the very last young man. He's got his own style. New "moves" or steps come and go in theatrical dance. The roots of tap are in the folk dance, just adapted to the extravagant musicals for show. Keep on dancin and playin your music! ❤
Love your clips.
That is so good. I have done clogging for several years but now I have scoliosis and I need to do something different. I really like your style. Thank you. ❤❤😊😊LK from Canada.

I have admired your talent both dancing & playing for quite some time now. I am still trying to play my violin again after a workplace accident 10 years ago. You & Karolina Protsenko have inspired me to keep trying. I have recently borrowed a Stratovarius copy made by a luthier in The Che

Czechoslovakia. I need surgery on my left shoulder, so I tried a left handed violin , but couldn't get the feel for it, so back to right handed again with a padded shoulder rest to help ease some pain on ky left shoulder trying to play again. I have also switched to playing fiddle style by ear, rather than try to learn ti sight read all over again. Too much memory loss from head trauma, though some of my music theory is coming back a little, along with slow but steady progress of the dexterity in my fingers on on ky left hand. Despite also having a right knee prosthetic & waiting for a new left hip replacement, I will be trying out some of your dance lessons, since it is simular to clogging. What footwear do you recommend?

Johnny Carson was a hoofer. He said he did "soft shoe". I always assumed that was tap dancing without taps. Is it a whole other style/step? You are some of my favorite entertainment. Now I know dad and others were buck dancing.
