Hank did let buck get beat up by thugs that one time
To me Buck and Hank's relationship was, at one point, was like a mentorship and Buck would have taught Hank everything he knew about propane and about the industry selling propane and its accessories. Over time Buck could get lazier and more spontaneous while Hank got better at his job and rose through the ranks. 20 years of gradual change on Buck's character but Hank still remembers Buck as his old wise mentor, and obviously still wants to respect him. Scenes like Buck remembering what he taught Hank, probably when he started working for him, about polishing tanks, it's touching.

We have to also bear in mind that Buck Strickland is something of a father figure to Hank. Hank suffered under Cotton's constant verbal and emotional abuse and is haunted by the feeling of never measuring up to his father's expectations. For all his other faults, Buck is at least somewhat reinforcing to Hank. He's willing to tell Hank that he's proud of him and show him the approval that Cotton never did. I also see shades of Bill in Hank's relationship with Buck. I think Hank and the gang are friends with Bill because they remember him for the man he was and less for who he is at present. And because they know Bill wouldn't have anybody else without them. It would also explain why Hank is almost unimaginably blind to Buck's downsides and unwilling to leave his employment at Strickland. Hank remembers Buck for the honest and caring businessman that he was rather than the washed-up shadow of his former self that Buck Strickland is at present.

Most shows would get the balancing off, like Buck becomes way too corrupt after being perfectly kind. They got the balancing perfect here. It's very subtle but very well pulled off. This is the show's best Hank-Buck episode. Like you said: Very touching.

Hank wasn't just Buck's best employee, he was a true friend. He kept Buck in check to make sure he didn't piss everything away on his vices. Mos people would've quit their job with a boss like Buck, but Hank owed so much to him after helping him to find his love for propane.

@Hiro-li8cf

well before he hired Hank he most likely opened up the business.........then hired Hank, LOL, in all seriousness, Buck seemed like the type that was a really good business man in his younger days, as seen when he remembered teaching Hank the ropes of the business, but as he got older, and developed more and more vices, he sort of....lost focus.
@zxKAOS1

@@Hiro-li8cf I'll also add that it seems like having Hank helped add to the business' success. Its success let him take on all those vices. Buck used to be very good at his job. He was a young and motivated small time business owner who just let success get to his head once he made bigger and better deals. Remember the secret to getting Rich is having someone else do all the hard work.
Hank's conservative values bleed through here. Buck gave Hank a lot despite being a parasite later down the line. He gave Hank a career which allowed him to afford his home and support his family. For Hank he owes a lot to Buck but also wants that father son relationship he was raised to believe in.
