Actually alot of the the "big name" gas stations are owned and run by individuals. It's a franchise system and the individuals have to put up a couple hundred thousands dollars to just start up. They manage everything in the gas stations. Sure there might be some "pluses" that the bigger names add like better deals on some products or the signature Shell products and the like. But everything is run and payed for by the local owners.

Yeah? Shell is a company who produces gasoline, the actual station is typically run by a private owner who determines the price at the pump based on what it cost to get it from the supplier. They also make the majority of their profit in the store, difference is that their stores are much smaller so even when they do opt to take a loss on the fuel they can't afford to take as much of a loss because their net profit from the store is less than one with massive store on it.

Only temporarily. If gas stations were allowed to do this then it would cause a monopoly. A similar situation in India and now 30 farmers are killing themselves everyday because of it. Indian government used to have set prices they would buy from the farmers from then sell of to the markets (this was to create a fair market). Indian government changed and decided they would no longer buy from them and allowed companies to buy from them instead choosing their own price. The companies began offering higher prices at the start and drove away all the other buyers. Then when the other buyers went out of business the ones had full control (monopoly) over the farmers and started paying the farmers less money than it cost to produce. And to this day 30 farmers commit suicide a day because of it, while the companies are getting richer and richer

Depending on how he extremity of the difference. Gas stations all around have loyalty schemes to try and encourage themselves over their competitors. Heck, fleet farm is doing this very scheme with a 5c off coupon you get from shopping in store. Worked for me.

I live in Houston. I from a small town called Ruston, Louisiana. They will have the first Buc-ees built in the state by next year. I tell people how big that will be. Unfortunately for all the other small gas stations back home.
