Stopped at a bucees for gas and a soda. Gas was cheap, but item’s in the store were over priced. The marketing strategy was very obvious to me, so I walked out and went across the street for my soda. $1.79 vs .89 the second stop was worth it.
Not me, a Canadian, thinking this was about Chuck E Cheese, and wondering why they sold gasoline...
That law did have a backfire moment in 2004 when the price of fuel suddenly skyrocked, then suddenly fell. I remember seeing two gas stations next to eachother where one station had prices at $3.78 a gallon, the other at $2.55. The other station was not allowed to lower the price due to the price of the initial bulk price. So the station was stuck, and could not sell any gasoline at market prices.

Yeah? Shell is a company who produces gasoline, the actual station is typically run by a private owner who determines the price at the pump based on what it cost to get it from the supplier. They also make the majority of their profit in the store, difference is that their stores are much smaller so even when they do opt to take a loss on the fuel they can't afford to take as much of a loss because their net profit from the store is less than one with massive store on it.

Only temporarily. If gas stations were allowed to do this then it would cause a monopoly. A similar situation in India and now 30 farmers are killing themselves everyday because of it. Indian government used to have set prices they would buy from the farmers from then sell of to the markets (this was to create a fair market). Indian government changed and decided they would no longer buy from them and allowed companies to buy from them instead choosing their own price. The companies began offering higher prices at the start and drove away all the other buyers. Then when the other buyers went out of business the ones had full control (monopoly) over the farmers and started paying the farmers less money than it cost to produce. And to this day 30 farmers commit suicide a day because of it, while the companies are getting richer and richer

In most statesl it also applies to various other staples such as miilk, bread and eggs .
This is in place to protect small businesses. Bigger places and chains can afford to take a loss short term, especially when they have other revenue streams inside. Then they are so much cheaper nobody else can stay in business. And then it gets bad for the customer too because now they have a local monopoly and can jack the prices way up.

Can confirm I’m in Alabama it was super cheap at first then all of a sudden their sign showing the gas prices disappeared and it was the same cost as everywhere else maybe ever so slightly cheaper but not worth going out of your way to get it.
It’s unfair competition. Big stores can take the hit on one product and drive the competition into bankruptcy, then buy up everything on auction and raise prices once they are the only name in town. It’s unlikely Buc-ees would do that, but that is why the law is there.

@@TheAnnoyingBoss Smart business can very quickly become monopolistic practice when taken to extremes which defeats the purpose of having a free market in the first place. Take a look at Amazon's monopolistic practices massively undercutting companies who refuse to be bought buy them then immediately raising the prices when they inevitably go out of business to much higher levels than the company they sank. They now have over 90% market share in the sale of baby products and multiple other categories of products

I feel like Buccees didn’t exist, then 2022’s summer went by and everyone had something relating to it.
I'm from Alabama.....growing up in the 80's there were numerous small mom and pop gas stations. Everyone had their favorite one. But where I live now almost all have gotten bought out by famous chains
There's a reason why no one stops in Alabama, they just want to come straight to Texas.

I live near the Alabama buc-ee’s and I can confirm that the gas prices are actually higher now
Some states make it illegal to sell gas cheaper than anyone else. Even offering free coffee with a fill up would be illegal.

This is still similary the law in australia, it helps only the BP oil company. My knowledge is Petrol prices can only be between a certain price of what the supplier ( BP ) sells it to them. So even though you can see upto a 40% price difference between locations the store owners usually make around the same profit because BP will charge a higher visited store more for supply, oh except for the stores BP own.
Its called a loss leader. Like bars on Wing Night. The wings are sold at a loss, but they make that up and more with beer sales
I love living in Texas and getting to enjoy their food.
Buc-ees at 3 am hits different on a long roadtrip
Yep this is the c store business. My first job was downstream energy investment banking. You’re looking at super thin margins on the gas and HUGE margins on inside store sales. They just want you at the pump to go inside and buy a snack for $3 that costs them $0.30 wholesale.
I went to buc-ee’s gas station exactly 72 times.😅
Also gas companies are price gouging as oil prices are back down and bucc ees isn’t rising it’s prices to way more than it should be

@@avacadomangobanana2588 You don’t know how economics work if you think lasseiz-faire capitalism is good.
The issue is that companies like QuikTrip come in, sell cheap gas, drive out the competition, and then raise prices higher than they were before.

Yea that’s why bucees was sued. This is in place to stop monopolies from occurring. For example, John D. Rockefeller had an oil company and he would sell oil at very low prices until his competitors basically went out of business and then would skyrocket those prices and make a fortune
I hauled gas for a conv. store chain, all the merch was at least twice what they paid for it. In 2008 when I quit, doughnuts cost him $0.06 to make , charged $0.89, car washes cost $0.75, would charge between $4-8.00 for them. It's the high mark-up items that keep them in business.
swear I thought the new reporter was mia khalifa...
Both sides of this make sense. Buccees has a great business model for their brand and Texas, however, Alabama has a decent law that protects larger companies from intentionally or otherwise swallowing small local stores that have no other way to prevent being bankrupt, similar to what Walmart has done.
