Knowing that Bubsy's original creator left after the first game actually explains EVERYTHING that went wrong with the follow-up games. Like, wow, it's so clear now. God poor Michael Berlyn, he just wanted to make a fun Sonic-y game and it got gouged to pieces by the ruthless 90s marketing wars.

Yeah, I'm a little more sympathetic to this character now after watching this. Because before, he really just looked like a cynical cash grab from start to finish, with stories like the developers shitting on their own games confirming it to me. Now I see that that wasn't really the intention.

if you move too fast, you are supposed to bump into things. That's why Sonic health system is genius, they allow you to continue playing even if you touch enemies without you feeling that game is too easy. So, after studying hours and hours of Sonic... he decide to go with one touch death.

I don't. They knew from the start that it would be an uphill battle, eventually becoming the butt of the joke. Instead of simply taking advice from professionals, they fought the giants and failed. Crash looks exactly like a middle finger aimed at Bubsy, being a bandicoot for starters, and wearing pants. Nobody wanted anything to do with the bobcat.

Fact. Especially when they tried a3d one. 😂 To compete with Mario 64 good luck still one of the best n64 games ever. That ocarina of Time and smash brothers and GoldenEye are probably the best right? Then trying to have siphon filter compete with GoldenEye had no chance... Poor guy.

Wow. Hearing all of this makes me feel actually bad for Bubsy. The second and third games were near-essentially sabotaged by staff that literally hated the game and intentionally didn't try...

travc765 Because the release date got announced too early. This was also the issue of Accolade being less and less competent throughout the 90's and Bubsy 3D being the pinnacle.

No. Wrong. They weren't. That's not what the stuff in this video says. This is the sort of fantasy you see a lot of people on the Internet use as an excuse. What happened was that that they were put on a project they didn't like, and they tried their best at it, but they understood the project was doomed and the concept was bad.

So let's talk about the hate of Bubsy of the developers. At some point towards the end of the development of the first Bubsy game, Cyndi Kirkpatrick was brought in to wrap up the design of the game. As stated, Cyndi would be the designer of Bubsy 2. According to Berlyn she hated Bubsy and at one point had the Bubsy plush hanging by a noose with a pencil stabbed in it's head. This to me was insipid because the first Bubsy game did bring in a lot of revenue for Accolade. My theory is that it did do so well and with Accolade as strapped as it was, Bubsy used a lot of the resources not allowing for other projects that Cyndi wanted to work on. In the end, Cyndi's only project as designer is Bubsy 2, and on her IMDB she is only listed as a tester for other non-Bubsy related games. www.imdb.com/name/nm1950125/

Adrian Bourne was an artist on the Bubsy 2 project that put a lot of pride in his work and liked Bubsy. But... first off, Bubsy 3D actually sold alright. There were those (that were maybe too young to know better) that liked the game. Also because of their knowledge in 3D development, and maybe in knowing what they would do the next time, they excelled in Syphon Filter and other projects they were called to do afterwards.

METALRON It's more like the teacher gives you an assignment for a project, but it's so vague that it's impossible to tell what they meant by it. So you do your best and wing it, only for the first kid to show off his project has the most amazing diorama ever. The teacher is so amazed that they not only give the student an A+, they also use that project as the standard for every other project from then on. And so you just slink back into your chair, knowing you're completely boned and that your project is a failure, but there is nothing you can do about it.

"Critically panned". Uh check the reviews for Bubsy 3D, it got mostly positive reviews when it was released. Most major game review groups on average gave Bubsy 3D 6/10 reviews, and some review groups gave Bubsy 3D 8/10s and 9/10 scores.

In the Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales source code the comments were talking about in the Hansel and Gretel stage where they try to hit Bubsy with "Cherry bombs". I think what the developers were trying to avoid was avoiding any references to "Popping cherries". I thought it was funny to see this dialog in the source code so I mentioned that to Faran Thomason (Bubsy FFT producer) when I interviewed him. He got a chuckle out of remembering that.

Huh. I used to just see Bubsy as a meme, but after hearing about the dev process and the creator, I feel sympathetic to the character I guess. His creator loves him so much. RIP Mario killed Bubsy Imagine if Bubsy had been the industry standard for 3D platformers first though.

I get your point, but i don't think your comparison is quite fair. It's not mass murder, it's a subpar franchise. Besides, i'm not saying people should now say that Bubsy is a good game or that it doesn't deserve criticism, i'm just saying it feels kinda sad to see something with so much passion put into it become... well, Bubsy. The fact that the end result is what it is only adds to the effect.

I was very impressed in how this was reported. As a Bubsy fan I am used to seeing some people digging on Bubsy for shock, but DYKG (and a few others lately) have really been trying to understand more of Bubsy and how the games were made. I learned a few new bits of trivia from this video.

And Ken Macklin being an artist explains why Bubsy was so beautifully looking at the same time. No Berlyn did not know platformer games, but took his creativeness, applied it to Sonic and gave his intepretation. In the end the first 3/4 of the first Bubsy game was Berlyn with the last 1/4 being Cyndi Kirkpatrick. Cyndi (who hated Bubsy) headed up the design of Bubsy 2. Yet another team for Bubsy FFT with Mark Hooley and Jody Cobb credited for level design.

The sad part is the man tried. He researched Sonic for hours on end, but just couldn't grasp what made Sonic great. You'd think the ten hours a day would help him learn the basics of the level design, but instead we get Sonic's speed + crap draw distance.

BrawlTheMan Though, to be fair, the graphical limitations already made Bubsy look a bit like a bunny and if they tried to zoom him out even more, most characters would look unintelligible. Still doesn't excuse Super Bubsy for Windows though!

It's easy to forget how hard that transition to 3d was. It just makes Mario 64 that much more impressive.

Finally a Bubsy video that doesn't shit on Michael Beryln and the Bubsy franchise.

It kinda feels like Accolade was trying to make a Woody Woodpecker for the gaming industry. I can't be the only one, right? Mario is Mickey Mouse, Sonic is Bugs Bunny, and Bubsy was SUPPOSED to be Woody Woodpecker. Now the gaming world's Woody is Crash Bandicoot, so at least we've got him to fill in the gap!

The story behind the Bubsy failure always makes me sad. I hate it when when someone’s passion, talent and drive just gets wasted. Poor dev. He kept going and going with this and just ate it in the end, but at least Bubsy wasn’t totally forgotten, people memed it up and it’s infamous as hell, but I adore this game cause I grew up with it. Loved the carnival level.

Oh! So Bubsy's love for tacos in Woolies Strike Back is a nod to Taco Bell!

if I were to create a Bubsy fangame I would do it just like Michael Berlyn decided to program the first game by adding fall damage in his honor!

If I was given an opportunity to make a bubsy game, I would based bubsy's personality on deadpool, and bubsy's sidekick Arnold the armadillo on courage the cowardly dog.

Fun Fact: in the original Bubsy game, there was fall damage. That’s right, fall damage, in a 2D platformer.

I remember reading long ago that the original game was going to feature a catnip powerup that would have been similar to the "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" effect from Super Mario World 2, and a decapitation animation for certain death states, but both were dropped during development for thematic reasons.

2:07 Level 3 and Level 7X/7 have errors in them... Level 3 should be 979323 instead of 979358 Level 7X and 7 should be switched to be in the right order for π

This video is informative and all, but I think JonTron's video really captures the essence of the Bubsy series. Also, fall damage in a 2D platformer.

I'd say they were trying to go for something different... xD It's not that bad the fall damage, that's why you have the glide thing, so you can land safely :)

Nitro Rad's review is a lot better. At least he shows the final levels. It's pretty obvious that Jon went like "Yep, that's level 2, I had enough, I quit". What a professional. If you're going to review a game, at least play the whole thing.

Ghiman the guy If I had to talk in depth about it, yes, I'd totally play it from start to end. Because _that's the friggin' idea of a review_ Doing what JonTron did was like watching the first episodes of a tv series and deciding he wouldn't watch more and just say it's shit based on what he watched. That's bullshit, and you can't deny that. Tho I must say, Nitro didn't play any of the 2D Bubsy games in camera. He only played Bubsy 3D.

You might as well change the Spyro one to "Spyro/Skylanders," since the toys-to-life department is starting to die out... There wasn't even a Skylanders game this year, after yearly releases for the past 6 years. From an Activision IP, that's scary... Still, the argument you make is unchanged. How is this thing getting a new game?!

David Rechtmann maybe so for metal gear or Castlevania. But considering they’re Konami properties, they may as well be dead and having their corpses parades around as pachinko machines. But we haven’t had a Ninja Gaiden game in almost 5 years, and I don’t count Yaiba as a Ninja Gaiden game.

A reminder that Bubsy has another game that is supposed to come out on October 31 called Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back. Seems like Halloween really is time to raise the dead.

When Bubsy 3D squared off against Mario 64. That part made me laugh!

Holy crap, this video helped me make sense of a thing I did as a kid that always struck me as very weird and confusing. So when I was in 5th grade or something, I did this custom cover for one my notebooks that consisted of a drawing of Bubsy I carefully copied from the title screen -- I distinctly remember sitting in front of the old CRT TV with the SNES turned on with the game in it. The thing that always bugged me whenever I recalled that is the fact that I wrote right next to Bubsy "π ≃ 3.14159". I always assumed that was a random thing I did for no reason, but now I realize it's entirely possible I noticed the first password corresponded to the first six digits of π and decided to record that fact. Once again, holy crap! I can't believe I had completely forgotten this.

Ironic that Bubsy is essentially the first Sonic fan game...

The Bubsy sprite in the thumbnail looks really worried and concerned.

This brought back so many memories. My uncle worked at some retail store and brought this game home one day. I played it and loved it, I remember he told me I should consider myself lucky because the game was in high demand and no one had it in stock.

Funny that he was able to write a paper about exactly what made Sonic great, and then not apply any of it to his game, making an inferior clone of Sonic with tons of problems.

Bubsy 3D on the Sega 32X...let that sink in. That would almost be AVGN-worthy.

tbh i rly like bubsy not the games but just bubsy himself but hearing his backstory now rly makes me feel rly bad for him i rly hope he comes back with a GOOD game someday

I actually have very fond memories of Bubsy 3D from when I was a kid. Looking at the game now, it's unbelievable that I ever like it at all hahaha

Had it not been for freaking JonTron, I would barely remember Bubsy as that garbage Sonic rip off I rented as a kid... he's everywhere. He's even got an upcoming PS4 game... because of freaking JonTron.

The first was good? Good how? Because of the awful level design directly clashing with Bubsy's movement speed that makes you stop every few seconds? Because of the one hit kills that make you stop every few seconds so that you don't get killed? What about the bad collision detection, was that it?

I was just thinking about Ken Macklin the other day. I had a couple of his comics back in 2000 because I recognized his art style from the Bubsy comic that came with the game.

Man, poor Berlin. He was clearly passionate about Bubsy but the dev team was awful and due to that the games are jokes.

Aw jeez, I never thought I'd actually feel bad for Bubsy. Or at least his creator.

That producer was trying to save us from the horrors that would become Bubsy. He will go down in history as one of gaming's greatest heroes along with Marauder Shields and Green Bike Guy...

>inb4 the new Bubsy game gets higher reviews than Sonic Forces

Trevor's Gaming Room I went, their percentage of people who drop out is very high and the online instructors are hardly ever available to actually help you. I had a really really hard time. A friend went on campus and had a better experience but I def would not recommend the online courses. I learnt more just looking up KZread videos using unity and unreal engines. Lots of that on KZread for free.

Lots of video games, like this, aren’t purely bad in every way and we’re doomed from the start just because. All their failure can be traced back to the developers and if Bubsy was altered a bit and was in the hands of better developers, it’s possible he could be more known, liked and respected today. He and many other’s still deserve a chance to do the right thing.
