    Hi Karolyn, new subscriber here👋. I thank you for sharing so many tips on cake decorating and designing. I started making cakes out of my home about 6 years ago and it has been a bumpy ride. So many things are learned by trial and error. It is awesome to be able to learn from someone else that has been there. I love this cake idea. However, I find fondant super heavy and hard to work with. The tylose powder idea, I have to try. I recently made a cake with these bubbles and used plastic bubble toppers from Amazon and covered in fondant. Less heavy and easy on my buttercream, as I don't use fondant to cover cakes. But these look amazing and I gotta try it sometime. Thanks again for all your videos and your cakes are so Amazing and perfect.

    Hi Nivia! The trick to doing it this way is to build the bubbles on top of each other. So the ones underneath are helping to support the ones above it. You can also get half sphere silicone molds and make chocolate ones!

  • @KarolynsKakes

    @KarolynsKakes

    3 ай бұрын

    I add some Tylose to ALL of my fondant. I add it to my Marshmallow Fondant when I make it. Just a little bit, it helps make it smooth and stretchy. Then, if I am making decorations that have to dry hard and hold their shape, I'll break a piece of the fondant off from the batch that I made (that already has some Tylose powder in it), and add even more Tylose powder so it dries hard. I hope that makes sense!

  • @KarolynsKakes

    @KarolynsKakes

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can make it with regular fondant. Make sure you add Tylose or CMC powder so the balls get hard. This technique requires that you refrigerate your cakes. If you don't, you might have some issues. And also, you build it from the bottom to the top. So when I do this, essentially the balls are being supported by the ones underneath. And make sure you use a lot of toothpicks and icing / piping gel to keep them adhered to the cake.

  • @marybelt1922

    This is so adorable. Question, do you refrigerate your cakes after you have placed fondant or gum paste decorations on it, and does that mess up any of the fondant or gum paste work? I heard you say that you put the cake in the fridge to have the buttercream on the back of the bubbles harden to the cake. Putting fondant and gum paste in the fridge has always scared me.

    I don't like to put prices on cakes for 2 reasons: 1. Depending on the area you're in, you will charge more or less. For example, in cities like New York or LA, you may be able to charge (estimated numbers) $700. In a more rural area, you may be able to charge $200. 2. It also depends on your skill level. You can charge more if you can get it sharp and straight and clean. I have a video where I explain this here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q46ItZOEn6XbiM4.html

    It's heavier than chocolate. But the way I stack them in this video, they are sitting on top of each other and supported in the cake with toothpicks and icing. I wouldn't put the bigger fondant ones on the sides of the cake without any other ones underneath them because the weight could pull it down. I hope that made sense!

    Hey question Wouldn’t this be heavy on the cake?

  • @KarolynsKakes

    @KarolynsKakes

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are a lot of things supporting the weight (toothpicks, icing, etc). Since you build it from the bottom up, the balls basically rest on top of each other. So the weight of the balls is split between the cake and the balls. (I hope that makes sense!) I've never had an issue with it, I use American Buttercream and I refrigerate all of my cakes. :)

    If I make fondant ahead of time, the tylose powder doesn't get added until I'm going to use it? Or can it be mixed in and stored that way

  • @KarolynsKakes

    @KarolynsKakes

    2 жыл бұрын

    I do both. Sometimes I'll add Tylose to the entire batch when I make it so I don't have to keep adding it. Sometimes I don't. I'll add the tylose to the entire batch when I know that I am going to be using the whole batch within a week or two. It just depends on my mood! LOL

    @@KarolynsKakes thanks, I tend to forget things like this if I skip it and try to do it later. I guess tho if the fondant wasn't cooperating I would eventually remember I didn't add the tylose! Another maybe taboo question, I was going to attempt the marshmallow fondant recipe, and had found a few bags of marshmallows past the best by date. Would these still work for me to test it with or do you think it would throw the whole thing off

    I get asked this question a lot! I don't ever make 1 single cake, start to finish, at a time. So I'll bake 1 day, fill the next day, ice the following day, and decorate the final day. So it's usually over the course of 4 days. But total time for me to make this start to finish is approximately 7 or 8 hours.

    Um did you wash your hands? 😂j/k. I do love the shade of your blue balls. I never thought of making these with fondant, I usually use chocolate with a mold, but this looks less melty being I live in Florida lol. So cute. Have you seen the origami cakes? They use buttercream on folded acetate then wrap around the cake. Def wanna give that one a try

    It's not super heavy, but definitely heavier than if you used hollow chocolate spheres or styrofoam balls. You want to make sure you build it so the upper ones rest on the lower ones!

    Oh no, I'm sorry that happened! I never had that issue with this technique. You're basically building the bubbles on top of each other, so the ones below should support the weight of the ones above. Did you use the toothpicks and buttercream to stick them into the cake? Do you refrigerate your cakes? If you build this on a soft (room temperature) cake and then try to travel with it, you could have issues. (That's why I refrigerate all of my cakes.)

    I’ll never understand why self-taught bakers don’t teach themselves thorough food safety. There’s at least 1,000 reasons why long and fake nails, polished nails, uncovered hair, absence of jacket and aprons, hoops or dangle earrings are not allowed in commercial bakeries. Sigh.

    You are right, in bakeries when you are doing mass production. Please watch the tutorial again. 1. Her hair isn't coming close to the camera or the sugarballs. 2. She does where gloves are needed. 3. It doesn't matter how long your nails are. Dirt gathers between the gap of your finger and nail. Long or short, you HAVE to clean that area with a nail brush or a toothbrush. 4. You don't use your fingernails when decorating anyway. You use your finger tips, she demonstrates it it here perfectly. 5. A baker that works from home needs to teach themselves how to work like that. Even if they are using a glove, cleaning their hands and nails. Etc. Kind Regards
