This song was inspired by a legend created in northern Italy, called "la cittá di smeraldo", which portrays a story based on the fictional smeraldo plant. The meaning of this flower is "a truth that cannot be told." This legend tells the story of a man who lived hidden and isolated from everyone in a tower, as his appearance was horrible and monstrous, causing him to hide. The only thing that made him happy was his Smeraldo flower garden, which he cultivated with so much love. One day, a poor woman in old clothes appeared in her yard and began stealing all the flowers that were there. He was irritated, but the woman appeared in his garden every day to collect them. So he decided to wear a MASK to go out into the city and find out what the girl did with the flowers. Until he discovered that she, being very poor, sold them to have something to eat. But, instead of showing up and allowing her to pick the flowers, the man went to his garden to discover new ways to make the plants more beautiful and in greater numbers, so that the woman could earn money and, when the flowers finally bloomed, the woman didn't come back. This is because, without enough money selling them, he died of hunger. And with this song, BTS tells us that if the man had loved himself and not hidden behind masks, the girl's fate could have been different. And this happens to us who often wear "masks" or a socially acceptable face to hide our 'true self' and not be judged. In other words, the truth untold tells us: Love yourself and don't hide behind a mask. The song can be interpreted as a reflection on the insecurity and loneliness that often accompanies unrequited love or the fear of opening up to another person. The use of masks, mentioned in the lyrics, symbolizes the barriers that people create to protect themselves from being harmed🇧🇷💜

The concert was in Osaka, Japan. Japanese audiences can get very quiet for performances, to show respect. And, like you said, to be in the moment and soak it all in. 💜 Jin had just sung Epiphany right before this, playing the futuristic piano he asked for, hence the tuxedo with tails.

In case you didn’t know - Jimin was actually sick this day in Osaka, so when you see him singing his heart out almost collapsing, it’s actually because he was in so much pain singing. His lungs/throat was killing him, but he still manages to amaze us all! 💜

Jungkook isn't called The Golden Voice of Korea for nothing, lol. I get chills whenever he and Jimin blend their voices together. JK does all of the ad libs.

I believe V’s voice really stands out in this song - so deep and smooth.

💜This is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's). The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he covered his deformed face with a mask and hid in fear, ...So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden. One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter. Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue stealing flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle. After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭 The smeraldo flower plays a part in the Bangtan Universe storyline, and you will see it in various MVs. Have a WONDERFUL Day💜💜

Woww, what a story, knowing this story make me cry hard for this song. All vocal line voices really blended well with each other and make this song so beautiful, as beautiful the flower itself. V deep voice as ocean 🌊, JK warmth shine voice as sun ☀️, Jin highly smooth voice flow as wind 🌬️ and Jimin angelic voice 👼🏻 blended beautifully 💜💜💜

Ok first off let me say I am OT7 - always and forever!!! But Jimin does things to me that I cannot explain!!! 🥵💜 they ALL have the most amazing vocals and I often hear that JK has the strongest voice and yes I agree, he rarely falters and never seems to struggle. V and Jin are also both incredible.. But to me, Jimin has the most beautiful, unique voice I’ve ever heard. I know at times he isn’t confident with his voice and sometimes he does struggle a little but omg when his confidence is there and when he’s doing those high notes, I get goosebumps. He is unbelievable. Again though, not taking away from any of them, they ALL sound amazing!!! BTS are so damn good 💜💜💜

I agree. I love them all and V is my bias, but Jimin’s voice is so unique and beautiful and his high notes always give me goosebumps (in this song it makes me tear up). It’s just something about his voice. But yes they are all amazing vocalists and so talented

This song is simply a vocal masterpiece from beginning to end, the lyrics, the vocals, the production are EVERYTHING!! All of their voices are amazing and they do so much with their vocals throughout the song, so they really utilize each of their unique vocal talents! JK really gives main vocal energy in this song, especially with all of his adlibs and backing vocals, Jin’s crystal voice brings out all my emotions as always, Jimin’s angelic tone just makes me want to close my eyes and sigh in bliss, and Tae’s deep soulful voice makes my heart hurt and touches my soul, I’ll never get sick of hearing his voice! I’ve been addicted to this song since it came out 💯💯

This album came out when I was getting a divorce after 20 years of marriage and as difficult as it was, it helped me process my feelings so much. This song in particular was so fitting and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I saw this in person a few months later and sobbed my eyes out during the concert. As you noted, the stadium was so quiet during the entire performance of this song and there were many tears all around. It was an experience I remember to this day. I am glad you watched this version because I have always felt, even when I listened to it for the very first time, that JImin's note at the end should have always been high, unlike the studio version. He absolutely kills it when he sings it high. It's the climax the song needs and deserves.

The only time I have heard a crowd sing with them is once in Brazil. Jimin was sick, and had a hard time all night. The crowd sang for him and he was so touched he cried his eyes out. The crowd sang the song from the right after they saw Jimin was in trouble, but they kicked up the volume on his parts, and his high note at the end and his last line JK sang for him. The crowd was like a giant hug.

Im not sure if you will read this, but truth untold is based on a very old folklore or a story that takes place in Italy, the story is called 'La Citta Di Smeraldo'. It just hits different after learning the story. In the story, there is a man who lives in a castle alone, hiding from everyone, wearing a mask that covers his face. Because he grew up unloved, and believed himself to be ugly. He grew flowers for himself because its beauty made him happy. One day he sees a girl plucking at his flowers, he gets mad but doesn't stop her. She returns everynight, so he starts to question who she is, if she has place to stay. Without realizing, he finds himself in love with her, but he never approaches the girl bc he is scared that his ugliness might scare her away. He soon finds out that the girl sells the flowers bc she is poor. Seeing this, he decides to grow a never before seen flower, so she can sell it with a high price. Its the only way he could show his affection for her without revealing himself. After weeks and months, he finally invents a flower and calls it 'Smeraldo', he then waits for her to come but she never does, not the next day, or even after that. He finally goes out to find out what happened to the girl, then he learns that she passed away. This obviously breaks him completely, so he basically spends rest of his life in regret, wondering what could've happened if he had only loved himself, so that he would be confident enough to face her and share his feelings. The truth untold is a song based on his POV.

When you talked about the quiet audience at the time of the performance, I remembered them performing in Brazil (my country) the audience was singing louder than them, even making a high note hahahaha

I've watched him mature over the years and he can easily make me cry unexpectedly. I love his persona and how far he has come over the years. The four of them blend their voices so beautifully. I love how they each have unique beautiful voices. Some groups all sound the same without showing their unique charms, but not with BTS. That's one of the many reasons why they are absolutely the best.

♦️This was from the Speak Yourself / love yourself 2019 concert tour that started mid year, that followed the Love yourself tour that ended the beginning of 2019. This was from when they performed in osaka, Japan. Apparently some seem to be confusing this performance with earlier performance in Brazil. Jimin was not sick. It was in Brazil, before this, but Jimin still sang. Jimin got emotional when, as usually B-army sang along as they’re known to do, but extra loud to support Jimin being aware that he wasn’t well. Brazil performances were followed by their UK performances at Wembley stadium where Jimin was still under the weather. As you can see this performance here was filmed in daylight since in this time of yr it doesn’t get dark in Japan til much later, towards the end of this tour. Followed by their final performances in Seoul, S.K., which was also the end of the Love yourself / speak yourself era. Many have been getting performances confused possibly not aware just how many performances BTS performed which in which they were wearing the same outfits. Possibly some army aren’t aware of the so many countries they BTS toured, some where they performed wearing same outfit. Plus this song as well as others, BTS performed during this tour as well as the Love Yourself tour which came right before starting in 2018, & ending beginning of 2019. Speak Yourself / Love Yourself tour began mid 2019 til the end of year with final performance in Seoul, S.K. Many of the member became sick, fatigued, with muscle injuries, sore throats, and so much more, that many weren’t aware of except for the behind the scene clips shown in either BTS annual memories dvd, as well as concert tour dvd’s from various performances in various countries. It’s just that all member regardless of how they’re feeling physically at any given time give it their all when performing that, so absolutely magnificently that most will never be aware of all they go through all they endure. BTS, all of them are so amazing and need to be appreciated that much more for just how much they give of themselves, but their love, desire, & passion of performing especially live for army is their priority. Which made it all that much harder to endure the pandemic where they weren’t allowed, not able to do what they loved most! 😢😔🥰🙏🙌❤️‍🔥

I was fortunate enough to see this song live and even in the states the ARMY was quiet Thru this emotional amazing performance. Then the rap line hypes everyone up with Outro tear, which is emotional in its own right. Amazing. I def suggest binging all the lives u can find for both those songs. They are incredible every time.
