Now i know why some were calling BTS controversial. they really went against popular opinions and called out people in their peer group by calling them spoiled and lazy. Where most kpop artists were singing about falling in love and partying and being fashionable BTS really went against the grain and took big risks with their lyrics and songwriting.

Yes, @Aizlyn Rose and Wish List combined have the correct definition of boomer. For word nerds like me I offer the following comments on why the word "boomer" was chosen. First off, we humans like to use one-word labels, and often use a single word for an entire concept. But why is "boomer" the label for this group of people? Do boomers boom? What would booming mean? Well, they weren't born as problem-causing, critical old geezers* as the rather recent term boomer conveys. They were born, as are we all, as babies. But these particular babies were born during a period (1946-1964) that people started calling "the baby boom". "Boom" means a time of increase. Similarly we use the term "blow up" to describe a sudden increase. ("Don't blow up my phone with texts!" "That trend blew up fast!" "Let's stream like mad and make this new mv blow up!") During 1946-1964, the quantity of babies being born ... blew up. It was a baby boom. Why so many babies? 1,000s of potential daddies had been away from home serving in WW2. When the war was over, they all came back, the single guys got married, the married guys came home to their wives, and soon everyone noticed the increase in babies. For decades, "baby boomer" had no negative connotation. It just meant a child in that generation. It was when these baby boomers had grown children of their own that the term Boomer came up. The current generation of teens and young adults wanted a word to refer to their parents and/or other disagreeable older people who criticized them. They shortened baby boomer to boomer, as in the "OK, Boomer!" meme. www.vox.com/2019/11/19/20963757/what-is-ok-boomer-meme-about-meaning-gen-z-millennials So, that's how boomer came to mean "critical old geezer who won't admit to causing difficulties for the next generations." * Anyone offended by my saying "critical old geezer" needs to be aware I am 61. Anyone in my 58-76 age group, including me, could potentially belong to this problematic subgroup. My intention is to show consideration for young adults. My generation has caused big problems. I'll keep focusing on getting the log out of my own eye, that I might see better to help get the speck out of others' eyes. And I might come to see the other person doesn't even have a speck in their eye.

For those who still don't understand how intense societal pressure in SK is... Taehyung's mother sent Tae one of those padded jacket (North Face) when he moved to Seoul to train for Bighit because she doesn't want her son who was from the farming province to be bullied at school by the city kids for not owning one. Thank you for explaining this David. This is one of those bts songs where it sounds like a normal bop but when you learn the meaning behind the lyrics you'd realize that once again bts is kicking the society in the ass.

This pressure exists in America too, but not on the level of conformity in Korea. Koreans like to look the same because their culture is collectivist rather than individualistic (not saying either is good or bad, just different). The percentage of kids trying to buy the same stuff to fit in is much higher in comparison to kids in American schools. Just from looking at those photos alone, seems 90+% of the kids have the North Face padded jackets, hardly any variety in jacket style. When I was in school, I remember Northface fuzzy jackets were popular, but not everyone had them (I didn't), and few would care or notice if you got an offbrand dupe.

It reminds me, how BTS members thought Taehyung is a spoiled kid when he came to Seoul, because his mother bought him a surprise expensive jacket (back then I didn't see anything special, why jacket?), just to protect him from "mocking of these rich city kids". They used to be a poor farmers family, Taehyung's parents literally had to give him out to be raised by his grandma, because they had to work. The attitude of these kids is sick.

I'm a parent...in America. This is a universal theme. I have a 25 y/o son who could use to understand these lyrics...if only he would sit down long enough to listen to BTS. Fortunately, when he was a teenager we told him if he wanted the labels HE had to pay for them. I wasn't...I couldn't afford to, nor could his Dad. So this song resonated with me. He has to have the labels too. Funny thing is I'm the one with the North Face...lol. My son was good at trying to make us feel bad for not getting him the labels but we just couldn't whether we broke our backs trying or not. We didn't want him to be THAT child, he still did to an extent. This is also another reason why BTS resonates with older fans. As parents and individuals we have gone through the experiences they sing about. We understand it and want better for our children. All parents want better for their children. They may sing about what troubles them as young adults but as parents it troubles us. I really love your explainations. They are great and confirm my interpretations of BTS and Korean culture.

In Singapore it’s the same. At the top elite school where ministers and CEO’s kids go to school, you’re judged on what mobile phone you carry, what car your parents drive, where you live or vacation at. If you can’t keep up with them then you’re basically a social pariah. It seems that in SK though, this issue is in every school no matter the prestige level. Kids are brutal now.

  • @mel_sj

I live in Singapore too but i don't think the issue here is as bad as in South Korea. Many of the families earn middle-income so there isn't such a huge difference as back then when the economy is still building up. It also goes back to what kind of friends you want to mingle with, whether they be mindful of your financial background or things like that. But i must still say that it's true that our society is becoming more materialistic these days, statuses and trend following mean everything and ppl use all sorts of methods to be on par with the richer peers. We need to be more individualistic in our own mindset but our thinking are structured to make us look upon others and striving for the better when we already have enough.

Spinebreaker became my instant fave in the album because I was impressed by Tae's voice but was even more impressed by the lyrics and its message which I dont hear often in Kpop. Since then I always felt like Spinebreaker was underrated until BTS did a selfmade MV and this song eventually became a meme. Others unaware of the message just thought of it as a fun meme-y song too so I was sad it kinda lost its meaning in some of the people in the fandom. Glad to know DKDKTV is here spreading awareness on the message of Spinebreaker and a few other BTS songs.

I became a single parent when my kids were 5 and 7. Yes, you can see the social class differences at school very clearly. You can even tell which kids are wearing / using expensive items that they truly can't afford. I educated my kids early on by being completely honest and transparent on our financial situation as a family. We shopped together they saw the checking balance go down. They saw the bills. Out of that, they developed a strong work ethic. Now, they are both higher educated young adults. Making their own money. We all work hard, and gifts have a much deeper meaning when the struggle is known.

@@CheerUp2 no these kids not even lack at anything on their lyrics of songs. They just talk about something else wich is important as much as their lyrics on their early time. 2013, 2014 they'r talking about youth, rebelation, and else. 2015, 2016 still talking about youth but this time their point is the temptation, and they'r on their way to an adult life that they start to see world on more wide view. On this time (2016) they already make a concept about love your self. End of 2017, they start to talk about love your self wich is this topic is not less important than the Topic they talked before this era come. # sorry for my broken English.

It's sad how I used to be a spine breaker. I remember seeing the mv with my friend in school, we looked at each other not only because of how weird the MV was, but because of how we used to be/are those kids BTS pointed out. In my old school and even know in highschool everything is competition. Who got expensive shoes, who's gonna buy the latest iphone first, who has a gucci watch on their wrist. I remember back in 6 grade I wanted a phone and I'm not joking I said these lines "BUT EVERYONE HAS A PHONE EXCEPT ME. I NEED IT". I was surprised knowing BTS got the perfect image of me back then. Luckily I broken out of the habit, unfortunately there's still kids who are spine breakers asking for their parents for those latest earbuds. I'm glad I am "poor". And I'm also glad for being a BTSARMY.

I can't remember where I watched it, but the MV for this was like a challenge from their producers to BTS for them to conceptualize, choreograph, and film an MV in a span of several hours. Hence, the low video quality and less complex "dance" moves :)) Still, it's amazing how it matches the satirical feel of the song :))

But as a survivor myself I can calmly say my children to just relax and not let it get to your head. There's always someone better off than you. There's always someone less favored as you. Appreciate what you have and work hard to get the things you want but don't lose your soul in the process. I'll get the things you need. There's always a new trend...that's what it's called a "trend" it comes and goes. Thanks for this video. Really appreciate the effort.

I really hope and so look forward to you guys doing a BTS "Go Go" Explained! I can't tell you how incredibly misunderstood that song is if people even bother to read the lyrics! It's such a fun upbeat totally hype song that many just enjoy listening to it and forgo reading the lyrics believing that they know just from the English they believe they hear. Even after reading the lyrics not knowing the situation in Korea now with people barely making ends meet no matter how hard they work if they are lucky to find a job many people actually think that it's just a carefree song about spending money! I've even heard people saying how many are just plain lazy not getting jobs and spending all their money not caring about anything else but partying. This really needs to be corrected and explained. I've tried but so many people listen to you guys! I'm so vey grateful that you're doing this with all these songs! 👍👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏💜❤️😎😃😍🐥

I don't think this kind of spine breakers will ever go away, it will always be there no matter how much we tried to avoid it.

i feel like this happens everywhere. everyone feels under pressure to keep up with trends and be able to afford new phones, shoes, clothes etc. just cause the people around them have those things. I believe parents should make their kids work for it instead of just giving things to them cause later on in life, when their kids are 20 or 30, they're gonna want to ask the parents to buy them a new car or rent them an apartment. they begin to get used to all the luxury and items that are freely handed to them without putting any work into it. this problem should change.

I'd already had the lyrics somewhat explained (through a post on the Amino App), but watching your video brought out details that I hadn't noticed before. The music video also makes much more sense now too, lol. While watching the video, I found myself reflecting on the pressure that *some* ARMYs feel that in order to be a "true" fan they need to buy lots of merch, and that if they ask their parents to buy them merch and concert tickets (especially at gouged prices etc.) they're going against the message of this song and, ironically, what BTS themselves believe. I also found in this video, specifically in RMs verse, the answer to some criticisms I've heard around the group's wearing such expensive name brand clothing: they worked hard and earned the money themselves. I'm loving this series David! One of the reasons I love BTS is for the socially conscious and progressive messages in their songs, and I look forward to learning more!

Thank you so much for explaining these lyrics. I think this is a universal theme. Kids at my school have expensive brand jackets and shoes. They beg their parents to buy them expensive ass clothes and shoes that they know they’re going to ruin and stop wearing in a 4 months or so. A lot of parents struggle with money and work hard to put a roof over their head and food on the table, but SOME kids can care less and want clothes or shoes from expensive brands to seem cool or rich. I wonder if they know how hard their parents are working for them and how tired they must be. Yes, I’ve asked my mom for some stuff, but it’s never expensive, or at least I thought. I was like this when I was young and would ask my mom for a lot of toys never realizing how expensive it was. I’ve changed since then and realized how I don’t need stuff like that in my life. Not just toys, but other stuff as well. I hope other people see this and that it knocks some sense into their head

외랑둥이들에게 Am I wrong?

I'm so glad I have parents who taught me how to work my ass off. Currently helping out in our mini bakery although the Night shift work is really tiring but it's satisfying to see the rising sun and to eat first the freshly hot baked bread is the best part. This song is totally my fave

This is so true it happens in America a lot and when I was in sixth grade I would always get bullied by the other kids for not owning any trendy items and it pissed me off and I who was still young younger then everyone else didn't understand the pressure society puts on us and then it took me by the end of seventh grade to find out why and it made me sad and that's when I started to pressure my parents to buy me trendy items that everyone else had and I finally realized that I am just me and I shouldn't care what everyone else says and now I just continue my life being different and now that I finally found out the meaning of spine breaker I honestly can't thank you guys enough thank you guys and thank you to BTS for writing this song I couldn't relate to it that much

I never followed trends back in my school days which was forever ago. I started the trends instead. And I was perfectly fine wearing non expensive clothes that were mostly donated to me. Plus I never begged my parents for anything they could not get me. Thanks for breaking this song down for us.
