So basically, BTS was catching crap for becoming "Too Westernized" so they pretty much said, hold my Soju, and made a song jampacked with Korean cultural references while at the same time, keeping it very much BTS AND incorporating elements that they've been made fun of for... such as J-Hope being lanky (wears a bugs bunny sweater in front of one of those dancing air thingies), V dressing like a grandpa (wears slacks and suspenders), Suga for being super pale (wears a Snow White sweater)... You also see in the beginning that the sun is rising behind them, there is a ship on the left of table and a world globe on the right and at the end, the sun never fully sets (the sun never sets on BTS because they are global). They even use a traditional Korean drum beat in the background and sing it. DKDKTV did a great breakdown for the cultural aspects.

Idol was one of the songs that finally pulled me into the BTS rabbit hole. I loved how chaotic the MV is and the lyrics are DEEP but once I understood that the song is basically a big middle finger to their haters I appreciated it even more. It boils down to the boys taking a lot of negative things that people use against them to downplay their music and by saying, "talk all of the shit you want and I don't care because I love myself". For example: k-pop uses only green screen so we're going to go way overboard with it when BTS are known to use practical effects whenever possible. Haters talked shit about any of the boys wearing glasses because they look "ugly" so Tae's wearing them. Don't use silly filters when they go live but here RM did to prove a point. They're too "westernized" and selling out of their culture but Idol is full of Korean touches like the bunny in the moon, their cultural clothing and buildings. I mean it's a lot to take in but every single aspect has another meaning that's more than meets the eye. Okay, the post is long enough but Idol's one of those songs that's meant to be heard in a stadium with 60K people singing, "You can't stop me loving myself!"

Yes! When I realized that all the symbolism in this song was about Korean pride and telling the haters to stuff it I loved it even more. All the scenes of layered images of them were because of people saying 7 members are too many, Suga's Snow White sweater because someone said he was too white, V's heart shirt because someone insulted a sweater he wore with a heart on it, etc. When PTD came out and they're all denim and fringed out in a laundromat in what looks like the desert southwest it made me laugh so hard. Instantly knew it was because they were getting so much shade about dropping songs in English and again, becoming too "westernized". You just know they were like, "You think we're westernized? How about now?"

They made a whole stadium shout "you can't stop me loving myself". That's so powerful and empowering. And once during BTS performance of IDOL at an award, you could see the other idols present holding onto their seats because the whole place was literally SHAKING due to the amazing public's reaction.

I love that transition between soft feminine Jimin to badass dancer Jimin. His entire demeanor changes like a chameleon. It's fascinating and beautiful to watch.

I JUST NOTICED

The live performance of this song is incredible, and that special stage they did for the MMA awards a few years ago was breathtaking. You’ll see the three Js (J-Hope, Jimin and JungKook) dancing to traditional songs right before they perform idol.

They performed this on MAMA 2018 where 3J gave us one of the best opening stages while promoting Korean culture 💜

Do you have any idea how many times I've watched this video and NEVER NOTICED THE MEMBERS IN THE BACKGROUND?! You are so friggin perceptive!

Idol is infused with a South African genre called "Gqom" . It's a major Sub genre of house music. Plays a major role in the South African ( 🇿🇦) Music and entertainment industry as a whole. This is one of the reasons I love Idol so much 💜🇿🇦

I love Idol so much, it was the first BTS song I ever listened to and I just got so much from it. Having self-love in spite of all the hate they get just means so much to me, and just aggressively reclaiming their own identities is so inspiring. I fell right into ARMY and never looked back.

ahh idol - the title track of the album love yourself answer. it's the wrap up of the love yourself trilogy. idol is a song that's a celebration of bts' self-love and acceptance. hence, the celebratory vibe (a whole korean festival in this mv). there are many symbolisms and korean cultural references too, like the tiger and the bunny inside the moon, etc. sonically-wise and choreo-wise, it's a fusion of south african and korean culture -- truly bts style (meshing worlds together). somebody already explained on here that it's also their answer to the people who claim that they're too westernized. there's a LOT to unpack on this song and mv. to me, whenever i hear it, i feel like celebrating myself, and it means a lot to me. 💜🔥 "you can't stop me loving myself" is such a strong line that can boost a person with low self-esteem's morale. i truly needed it especially back in 2018 when it's first dropped.
