I think its not really dark, more like HEAVY. He's singing about all the hardships he's faced throughout the years, and it's quite heavy and loaded and introspective. Its definitely not all sunshines and rainbows, but despite the thorns, doubts, and fears he's still moving forward - at HIS own pace and that's inspiring 🥺 I love Hoseok so much

I think you're right! I think this record followed the same path as Daydream. For Daydream he explained (paraphrasing) that he thought it would be more interesting to take the heavy unpleasant feelings that come along with being an idol and put them into an upbeat cheerful song. He thought it would be received by fans better than dark and depressing. We're so used to seeing Hobi in that "bright" sunshine vibe, how would ARMY's react to him really and truly showing the insecurity, depression and heaviness he's felt in the raw? He was concerned about that.

The song is upbeat & catchy but the lyrics are deep & it relates so much to “EGO” in Jungian Psychology (obviously).

Literally all of the members are so different. Like ALL are so versatile yet have a certain style that suits them iconically. Jhope such good vibes, he knows how to make ppl smile. A whole VIBE

It's actually more than just a vibe! He's reflecting on all the tough times he had before they made it and how hard it was growing up with the uncertainty of whether his dream is worth it. Especially when he says "The life of not J-hope, but Jung Hoseok flashes by, it must've been filled with regret until the day I die...blaming my dream asking why I live and breathe" Basically he thinks about the life he'd have if he didn't make it and how he might have ended up resenting his choice to pursue dance/music and how everyone who doubted him would have been right. BUT NOW it has all worked out, so despite those scary memories/thoughts coming back once in a while he's able to keep that anxiety at bay and say "I don't care, I'm going my way, trust myself" etc.

What I love about Jhope's music is that it is very bright and cheery on the surface, but if you analyze it you realize it is more deep than what meets the eye. Not to say it isn't bright, but I get a "smile through the pain" vibe from a lot of his lyrics here and in other songs like Daydream and Airplane. It's about reflecting on your painful past and regrets, but then looking toward to the future with a positive perspective. Love it.

Listening to him repeat the same line in EGO was perfect. They continue to give us clues. Cannot wait to hear what Tae has up his sleeve with his, "I'm shy," reply he has said a few times. Bravo to you Hobi! The song is another masterpiece. One a side note, I love how he made sure Becky G/ Chicken Noodle Soup(chickens on the fence) was well represented. Cheers you guys! Ego is interesting because despite how upbeat it is, the lyrics are quite deep. I'm going to quote yoongi on this "You hear hope when Hoseok sings". It takes a special person to be so deep and hard hitting and raw with their lyrics without becoming super depressing. On top of that it's an interesting response to Persona and Shadow, where it was "who am I" and Namjoon claiming all of his past selves, while still trying to figure out who he is now, and "I am you" with Yoongi struggling with his monster and ultimately coming to terms with the fact that it is part of him. And now there's Ego. Where Hoseok says "that way, way, way // only ego, ego, ego" and that "the life of Jung Hoseok who is not J-Hope flashes across my mind". He's come to terms with the fact that there will be regrets and thoughts that will follow him like ghosts that pop up from time to time, even though he's locked them away, but time flows and you just go go go, and even if everything--including himself--is changing, there's always a him that is never changing and he just has to trust himself and wow. BTS just keeps raising the bar. Honestly, I love this new song and it's awesome to see JHope singing. He's a fantastic rapper but they're all so talented, they can do it all rather than limiting themselves to certain roles (unless they want to of course). Like JK and Namjoon's cover of Only Fools Fall, when they do things in their own style they always create something inspiring and heartwarming.

Look at the record store window.. You will see Hope World, Airplane, Wings, Becky G, and other titles. Plus the chickens on the wall, Chicken Noodle Soup.
