BT 10 - Using the Pancham Hole

Музыка

This one is about how I use the Pancham (Thumb) Hole to play my Gayaki Ang more effectively. This was also shot at www.farmofhappiness.com :)
My Apologies, at 11:35, the phrase I am singing should be played more with importance on Ga instead of Re in Maru Behag.

We have an unfortunate tendency and an inclination to try and improve the deficiencies in the instrument rather than work on the deficiencies in technique (because working on technique needs discipline and is harder!)Flute having the ma to pa transition with a cut used to feel like a deficiency in the instrument to me. And I used to make excuses to people that such smooth execution is impossible (when someone used to ask me to play so film song that had that smooth transition). But now I realise that it's not the instrument but the player that controls how the sound output is. What you've spoke about gayaki ang at the end played even without a pancham hole makes so much sense now. As always, your video's give us so much insight into the techniques of instrument and your experiences tell us what are the possibilities with this beautiful instrument. Thank you so much for making these videos bhaiyya. Please keep making more... We're all thirsty for knowledge!

It probably took me three months to reach I guess not even 50% of your perfection on the phrase ga pa ma dha pa ma pa, but I didn't find anyone appreciating the fact that you just disclosed one of the most beautiful phrasings of kalyan( as per my knowledge). Thank you so much, its really rare to see someone so technically gifted and also willing to show others how its done.

well explained ashwin ji🌻so inspired by your flute playing i also got a pancham hole flute from anant dhotre, its well tuned and well crafted and i am trying it out. Since i play concert flute also which has a thumb key which is much smoother to play on account of the fact that we have to press 6th key to keep the hole open which facilitates the playing of thumb key because holding the flute from top is not a problem 😊. Here the challenge is definitely there but it can be flawlessly executed as demonstrated by you. Thanks for inspiring all flute players like me who are executing your flute playing concepts into guitar playing successfully 🌻

I surely know that only very few flutters of modern times can play old (as well as new) Bollywood songs very very well. And lesser put proper emotions. You are one amongst them who play perfect. So please just upload (and keep uploading) songs with which common music lovers can relate and appreciate. What you are uploading is for pro players. Most of whom will not even give you proper credit. Commoners also deserve something.

It’s a very conscious decision to NOT play film songs as I want to concentrate on my Classical music. What I speak here in my videos is not for pros alone. If you read the comments you’ll get a better idea. It’s for starting, budding and intermediary ’Flautists’ (not flutters) and they’ve consistently said my tips help them. I don’t want this to be an entertainment channel. I don’t also subscribe to the idea of doing covers. I detest that idea and have my reasons for it. I don’t advocate others not to cover songs but I would not do it even if it means not being popular.

@@ashwinflute I apologize for my English which obviously is not my strength. But the purpose of language is served once it conveys what it was ment for. Although terr sounds much melodic than tist. Just joking. I appreciate your thoughts. But I beg to differ. I have a lot to say to support my argument. But i am restraining myself to be harsh. Now a days there is a trend in orthopedic surgeons to prove n feel that the joint replacement is a bigger surgery. Surgeons who can't perform simple trauma surgeries very well feel very proud in doing replacements. You know why? Not for the benefit of patients or society but to pamper their pseudo ego and for economic benefits. Ego is hard to trace. So I made a simple test which works for me. To know if I m loosing my sanity I ask myself do I feel anything (task) of lesser importance. And if the answer is yes ....

Nice video. Some English subtitles would be great for those like me who are Hindi-challenged. Just want to note a point about the size of your pancham hole. As it is some distance from your tivre ma hole, it is very small. The way I hold my flute, the thumb is much closer to the index finger (tivre ma hole). As a result, my pancham hole has to be bigger in size than yours. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The smaller the hole (as in your case), the more rapidly you can close it. The larger the panchm hole (as in my case) the more volume you get and glides from lower notes can be much smoother. Also, a larger pancham hole will make it possible to get some more 3rd octave notes.

Will certainly do so but in due course. I have some other things I am working on that I want to show first. I have been experimenting with the thumb hole for some time - both on the bansuri and on shorter Carnatic flutes. I am more familiar with the latter, where I have placed the thumb hole close to the index finger and also a little further away as in your case but making the hole size the same as others and not much smaller as in your case. Using Carnatic fingering, the index finger opens and closes the shudh Ga (antara ghandaram), as you know. With a larger thumb hole placed somewhere like yours, it is easy to get the shudh ma (partial opening), tivre ma (full opening) and even the pa (full opening and tilting the flute away - only possible on shorter flutes). I have found this to be very useful in playing some ragas and kritis.

While I was watching yesterday's video my mind was in my tool box , mentally searching for square screw driver , sand paper and everything related ! During the day I made a pancham hole to one of my E base flute ( PVC flute which I had made earlier ).. It's almost perfect (technically ).. that is .. both the panchams measure the same frequency 501.10 heartz. on frequency meter However , they sound slightly differently ..Like twins looking almost alike with different personalities !! In marathi as I would say .. कानाला वेगळं वाटत ... I really do not know why this is happening .. my family members have also said .. yeah it's almost the same but.. that "but" is bothering me too much .. Can you suggest something on this ? This video on usage is again a superb creation .. Thanks ... ** 501.10 is just a number . I don't know whether it is perfect pancham or not..

It is also something else. The resonance aspects changes if the length of the tube changes even if the frequency is the same, the overtones differ (search overtones in sound). The second pancham with all fingers closed resonates different than the second pancham with all holes opened (thumb pancham) because the tube is a different length and resonates with a different TIMBRE!!! (research Timbre in sound, aka tonal colour, tone quality, perceived acoustics). All will explain itself if these 2 terms are simply googled and read about.

Thanks a lot Ashwin sir, you've always been great help as well as inspiration, just one thing i think is missing here, and i.e., pt . Sunil Kant way of using pancham. It just confuses me a lot, whenever I see him playing, may be because it looks so complicated kindly share your views about him.

He also uses pancham hole exactly how Ashwin ji plays. But there is additional key for lower ma which also gives very smooth transition from lower pa to lower teevra ma and lower shuda ma

Wondefully explained Ashwin sir. Would it help to provide support to the flute with the pinky of the left hand while playing thumb hole (for a right hand flutist). This helps me to keep the flute plugged to the lips.
