BSA Scouting Camp Emerald Bay Pro Tips & Trick for the Adult Leaders.

Pro Tips and Tricks for Adult BSA Scouting Leaders headed to Camp Emerald Bay.
When you park at the USS Iowa:
1.) The only open bathrooms in the morning are on the stern of the Iowa.
Head up the stairs to use the head.
2.) Once parked, lock your car and gather up the Scouts and all your gear and head south to the courtesy dock on the South side of the parking lot.
Check in ASAP with the ferry employees. They will generally have 3 waves of boats heading over that morning.
3.) Label your gear clearly with last name and troop number.
Any thing fragile, keep it with you at all times. It will get dirty.
4.) The Mess Hall has a coffee station for the adults and a water filling station inside on the drink machine. The food is great you will not go hungry. They also have vegetarian options.
5.) Swimming Merit Badge - Make sure that all of your Scouts have completed the Swimming Merit Badge and advise them to focus on activities that are water sports related.
We had scouts drop out of classes so that they could do all the water actives that are offered.
6.) The Adult Center is great. The pay for wifi is SUPER SLOW. ( less than 5 Mbps)
I found sitting on the picnic table at the mess hall right across from the adult center I was able to get a cell signal (AT&T) which was way faster than the WIFI. I was able to work and answer emails.
7.) The Camp Site - you will generally be sharing the camp with another troop.
And a good chance you will be in a tent with another adult leader.
Bringing ear plugs and an extra sleeping mat is advised.
Then bring coat hangers and a carabiner to hang items up in your tent.
They have a bad ant problem and do not allow ant spray. Keep food locked up and closed up tight along with water bottles. Extra zip lock bags would be great!
Bring a roll of duck tape. If nothing else you'll want a piece to tape the shower valve down so you can take a shower without having to hold the button down the whole time.
8.) The Camp Store has drinks, snacks, clothing and souvenirs for purchase.
9.) Bike Rental - if you have free time, grab an adult buddy and check out a bike and take a ride to two harbors. They have restaurants and a store and some neat sights along the way.
10.) The Lockers, bring a pad lock and they have 110 outlets in the lockers.
11.) Free Time - when the Scouts are in class and you have free time, grab another adult leader and check out a paddle board or kayak and snorkel gear and check out the sights.
12.) War Canoe - not gonna say much about it other than - give ALL of your gear to the camp guys to drive over. We saw more than one leader take their gear with them on the War Canoe and they came back with soaking wet sleeping bags... not good! (and bring a snack or two or three...)
13.) Silver Peak - make it a priority!
Wear really comfortable shoes, shorts and bring a jacket.
And lots of water.
It is worth it!
14.) Not in the video - but you will want to brush up on your swimming before you go. Go swim a few laps at the gym or your backyard pool in the weeks leading up to the campout... you'll be glad you did!
Enjoy your trip!
