BSA Owner's Club (BSAOC) - Clips from Member's National Camp - Mallory Park - May 2022

Фильм және анимация

The BSAOC national weekend was held at Mallory Park this year as the usual venue at Market Harborough was unavailable. Here's some clips and photos, hopefully in chronological order, from across the weekend. WARNING - This video had to be ended abruptly due to a shocking discovery.

Gods teeth where did that Ariel 3 come from? Thanks for posting as I’ve attended the last couple of these events on the Sunday which I understand wasn’t open to the public this year. Obviously it’s a BSA club event but it’s nice for non-members to get a chance to see so many BSA’s in the same place. When held in Market Harborough it’s close enough for my brother to ride his 1930 BSA S18 to (similar to the Sloper you featured, but with an upright side valve engine).

Cheers Stew. There's a story with the A3 - more to come! I think next year the Whitsun event will be back at Harborough and be public. Nice to hear about your brother's S30 - I like the 30's singles in Brunswick (?) Green and a branch member rides his Blue Star regularly to the meetings and was at Mallory on it.

Some times if a battery sits without use for a while it can start to 'sulphate up' and then doesn't seem to hold a charge - mostly because not all the surface area of the plates are working with the acid. There are chargers that can sort this out called pulse chargers which sounds rediculous but it can work. I looked on ebay and bought one for about £15 and also got one of these electronic battery condition tester things for about £21. Used the condition tester - not the old load tester but a clever electronic thing - to ascertain the battery's overall condition or 'state of health' and then did the full repair pulse charge thing with the charger and it worked,. The battery started of with a 78% state of health reading only holding 65% of it's charge, and ended up with a 100% SOH and 98% state of charge.... Now I am not accusing you of leaving the bikes unused 'cos I know you don't, I do and used these 'optimiser' things to maintain the batteries but they still started to sulphate up. After the pulse charge repair treatment the batteries are like new - it did wonders for my car battery as well, the constant drain of the alarm/immobiliser had made that battery condition 62% and after a couple of repair charges it is now 88% (- it's an old battery ) so I use one of those solar charger things on that !

Thanks - I do have an intelligent charger which includes the ability to de-sulphate plates, but on this occasion I decided to replace the battery, as it was actually failing to charge and deteriorating.

@@BSAPowerSet I borrowed an 'intelligent charger' with the desulphating fascility but it made no difference to a 12AH (200CCA) battery off my Spotster, so while off work waiting for a broken leg to heal I researched batteries and found these 'pulsating charge' things. The inteligent chargers will do a slight pulsating charge for about ten minutes and then charge the battey which is what the borrowed one did but it soon showed the battery to be fully charged. The battery is trying to start a 1250cc high compression (10.5 : 1 ) motor ( a well modified engine) and needs the full 200 cold cranking amps but only had 160. Couldn't improve it for love nor money. So I bought the pulsating repair charger thinking that at £15 it was worth a try - and something to do while recovering. Set the thing up and turned it on - it takes 14 hours of the full repair cycle and at the end after sitting for twelve hours after the charge it was showing a better 'state of health' and 185 CCA, so I gave it another go and sure enough the old tired out battery now shows 100% state of health, 98% charge AND 210CCA - battery was rated 200 when new ! Now I don't say it will 'recover' your bike battery but you never know. I have not actually tried it on the bike yet, but if you think about it when the plates are 'sulphated up' then you won't be able to charge a battery as the acid is weak and the surface area of the plates is not being 'worked on' by the acid as it cannot get to the plates....... I'll go and try the battery now. Intelligent chargers are good but this thing is better - I have a car jump starter thing and the battery has just died on that - showing 0.14 volts - so I am going to give that ago, outside though incase it blows up ! I also have one of these lithium batterys for the Sportster that was in the bike when I fell off it and it sat for 6 months before I could get to it.... from totally discharged -2.3 volts - to full working order in one charge, but that was on a 'standard moto charge' with no desulphating pulses. I tell you Angus, this is one of the best fifteen quid purchases I have ever made !

@@BSAPowerSet Well it's worth a look - I can't say how long it'll work for the Sportster battery, but it has done wonders for the car battery - that is about seven years old and was well short of it's supposed cranking amps..... yet with only 11.4 volts it would still start the car ! it is a turbo 1.8 Skoda so although the battery is the same size for all models, diesel included, it is relatively low compression. Just try the charging OUTSIDE where it won't mess anything up if it explodes the battery - the chargers are still on ebay and at £15 to 20 you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the interest and comment. Yes I used to have a C15T which went well and at one point I rode it abroad in France. It was pretty reliable but in the end I sold it to a friend (who still has it) to begin the grey framer collection. I prefer the B25SS though - much quicker and better handling.
