BSA Gold Star 650 Review. A New Modern Classic Motorcycle. Better than a Royal Enfield Interceptor?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I finally got my hands on the NEW BSA Gold Star 650cc Motorbike to review. In my review I go into detail on all the things you'll be thinking before considering buying one of these machines. So what is the bombshell? Is it any good or not? Hit or Miss? Watch all the way through to find out!
I talk about the Engine and how it stacks up to its rival the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 motorcycles. I speak about the Handling, stopping power, the way the bike makes you feel, and most importantly whether it's worth going and buying one of these new modern classic motorcycles with your own money. Could this be a Royal Enfield killer?
I also give my points of view as a 20 year old motorcyclist; it might not be what you and the motorcycle manufacturers would expect!
The BSA Goldstar model in this video is presented in Highland green. I must say this is probably my favourite of all the colours it comes in and it is the cheapest too, coming in at £6500, the other colours are an extra £300 at £6800.
I'd like to say a big thank you to Cooperb Motorcycles near Bozeat Northampton, they have a great range of stock; BSA, Royal Enfield, and other makes, and are extremely friendly and helpful, you can see their website here: www.cooperbmotorcycles.co.uk

I dont think it competes with the Interceptor until customers are actually riding their bikes out from the showroom! I'm Indian and where RE and a couple of brands have done so well with creating good faith around Indian brands, these guys seem to have bitten off more than they can chew...Dont get me wrong...Im rooting for their success...but unless they literally sell a bike that can be ridden out by a customer...I cant take them seriously!

Hi Mr Darcy, I had a test ride three weeks ago, to add I have an interceptor which I've owned for 2 months. The BSA is a nice ride, I took it down my usual route which is country roads and a few fast b roads, it did bounce me out of the seat which my Enfield hasn't done, (the shop may off set the preload a little too stiff) the engine I found quite torquey however no more than the Enfield. What I didn't like about the engine was the knock from the counter balance shaft it sounds like the big end is knocking also a little snatchy off and on throttle when warmed up. The gear shift is a little slack when changing down from 2nd to first, feels like it's not quite home, strange. The mirrors are next to useless as you need to move your head too much to see behind you. No centre stand as the cat is in the place the stand would need to be. Overall I prefer the smoothness and the feel of the interceptor and that's not because I own one, I test rode the BSA with a view to exchange my Enfield, but thought better of it. I enjoyed your review keep them coming that's you and your dad.

Great review. I had a good look at one in our local dealer, and will definitely get a test ride when the weather is better. As you say, very comparable to the Enfields in terms of finish. I love a big single, so I'd be very tempted by this if I was looking to buy a good value retro. One thing that really stood out as disappointing is that the BSA logos on the engine and filler cap are decals. They look incredibly tacky and will probably rub off quickly. BSA really need to emboss the logo on future models. I agree with your comment on the USB location on Triumphs. I have a Street Scrambler and I haven't used the USB socket once because it's just a faff.

You can see where the royal enfield made savings BSA spent and where enfield spent BSA saved. I love the looks of both and can't really decide between the two so it will come down to waiting on more long term reviews on the BSA. I currently have 3 bikes one of which is a himalayan. I have been thinking of a classic style bike but BSA took a long time to launch and of course we have the new cruiser 650 from enfield with talk of a classic 650. So might have to wait for those before making my decision. Great review. As you said anything you find cheap on the bike can be swapped out.

I recently sold my 2000 Fat Boy and bought an Interceptor. I made a test ride on an Interceptor back in September. I was smiling during the whole ride on it (similar to the feelings you described that you had on the BSA). I was somehow more happier riding the Interceptor than I ever was while riding my Harley. I'm hoping the best for the new BSA GS. I sold my Road King about a year ago to get a boat. I live in a small coastal town, an hour 1/2 or so, north of wellington, New Zealand. Miss the bike like crazy. However, having just hit the big 60, I've been eyeing up the RE Interceptor. Price point is spot on. Local dealer in Palmerston North, has a sunset strip colour coming in, in the next couple of weeks. Love the ease with which you can customise these bikes. Aesthetically, the BSA has me tingly all over. Just love it. And a big single, well... nuff said. It's not likely to land here anytime soon, so my hit of retro is sorted. When it does land, I see having both these bikes in my shed. It's a shame the pandemic hit. There's no doubt has affected the launch of the BSA. Thanks for the review, and all the best for the New Year.

BSA stood for either Bloody Sore Arse or Bits Stuck Anywhere in my recollection. Unfortunately I can't work up any enthusiasm for this plastic gold star with its attendant water cooling and disc brakes. You can't beat the sound of a real Goldie either! Gold stars should be air cooled 500cc or 350cc with a RRT 2 gearbox (Just my opinion) not a good choice for round town (slip the clutch up to 30mph to pull away) I live in London so with our traffic not really practical (also at 69yrs old I'm not sure I could kick start a real Goldie anymore) I still have a 1955 BSA B31 350cc single and an old scruffy Bantam, also have two 1990s 500cc Enfield bullets and my 1965 350cc bullet (my preferred transport) Anyway I think I've taken up enough of your time cos I've started to ramble now. For that, it feels more like my Classic 350 than my Interceptor 650. Ride and handling felt great though, but did “white line” noticeably more than the Interceptor, even though they both have the same tyres. Maybe it is down to the more relaxed geometry on the BSA. you guys are really lucky to enjoy these bikes in perfect locations. In India you have bumper-to-bumper traffic which makes riding theses bikes a major pain and you dont get to enjoy the thrill that these bikes give....love the looks of this bike and yes i hate those hideous plastic monstrosities that go as "crotch rockets"....always loved the analogue dials

My first bike a brand new 175 cc BSA in 1966 oh dear ! A mate got a Honda 175 twin everything worked on it and didn't stop when the brake light came on because the electrics weren't up to the job, but so saying I would like a look at the 650 , stay safe

Finally got around to a test ride, tbh it was better than I expected, a bit sluggish up to 40 but once it’s got it’s weight moving it’s quite stompy, feels more like 60bhp than 45, handling very nice until you really push it hard, then it wallow’s, mainly due to the rear suspension being way too soft, overall though an enjoyable bike 👍

My view is that the new Gold Star is a beautiful recreation of a classic bike, and I'm really glad that those things exist for the people that want them, (although it may be a few months before you'd be able to buy one) but if it were my money, I would be getting the new Honda Hornet, which in my opinion is a far better motorcycle for about the same money. I used to own BSA Starfire nearly fifty years ago, and I don't know what you were getting at with BSA but my guess is Bloody Sore Ass, although I didn't find my Starfire particularly uncomfortable.

I'd agree, it's let down by lots of little things here and there on the bike, the dealer network is new and still growing, the bike has no immediate history, so is untested for the build quality, and it's very similar to the Jawa forty-two, take a look!

Lovely. I love big singles since they're big, lazy thumpers like me. The only thing I regret is that they couldn't make the horsepower without putting a radiator on it. Maybe the aftermarket can make one that blends into the lines of the cradle a bit better, but that's a minor complaint.

Very nice review Mr Darcy, and how refreshing not to have to listen to any swearing or childish innuendos. I love the look of the bike overall, I'm just a little disppointed in the cockpit. It all looks a bit cheap and does not replicate all the lovely chrome of the original. I guess it's built to a price with BSA gun stickers rather than etched motiffs, and painted engine casings as opposed to more plush aluminium etc. Overall all though, I think it's a lovely bike and I hope it does well.
