BSA A65 oil in frame Lightning 750 Black Mountain ride after attention and mystery breakdown.

Since a recent 'Before' ride on this machine, much work has been done, including setting and balancing the carburettors correctly, adjusting the throttle cables to get the last quarter throttle, new tyres, tubes and rim tapes, brakes cleaned, oil changed, larger gearbox sprocket, loose tappets correctly adjusted, ignition timing checked and more, it was finally time to try it again and compare, although the first attempt was cut short unexpectedly. Many checks were made on the wiring and ignition, but my favourite culprit may have been the end of a redundant live wire I found merrily wandering around under the seat - I think it may have touched something and stopped the sparks, but a few other little niggles with loose connections etc were also put right. Whatever, it ended up going pretty well and it now appears able to make the clutch slip, with all its new found 'Get up and go'!

I loved my A65 Thunderbolt. I had the full Devimead conversion and transitor ignition on it as well as the Avon touring fairing. Oh yes and the 21 tooth gearbox sprocket. Lovely touring bike!

Thanks for taking us on the run great scenery. Another A65 (75?) back in good fettle. I like the "Oil in Frame" models a few updates to engine and clutch mechanism. I run a 1970 pre OIF single carb Thunderbolt. Cheers 👍

Pazon-a-situs. Loose wires to the ignition stator plate has happened to me before. The vibration causes the tiny screws on the stator plate to come loose. Hard to notice because there is a small zip tie holding the wires in place until vibration has its way with the ends. Love my OIF Thunderbolt. I've got an A70 motor to go in it next. Loved that you passed the red car going up the hill. Lovely day for a ride!

It's unsettling when something like that happens without some prior indication. It is suggestive of that loose cable that you'd stood up on the pegs for a stretch just before it stopped. I always feel a bit odd getting a pillion lift home after a breakdown but grateful just the same. Glad you got a weather window to exploit the new rubber, did I spot an ego disappearing in a puff of Volvo exhaust smoke? Were I the owner, I wouldn't baulk at needing some clutch work after a result like that. Well done and thanks as always.

Thanks, Niall. The bike just stopped like it had been switched off, no missing or popping beforehand - always a bit alarming when they stop like that and all electricals seem to still be working. i can't definitively say what I did to fix it, which is a bit of a concern. That Volvo driver may already have traded in for something with more power after that, although I wasn't sure I was going to be able to pass him before that chance presented itself. Prior to this and following the breakdown, that pillion ride was much appreciated, but I had a scare when my rescuer just rode straight over our railway crossing, without stopping to look both ways!

I thought I saw 5000 rpm when you were at 60 +-mph in top and also 4000 at 50+-.? Is that correct,? That seems like very low gearing, high rpm for the speed? Or is that due to the clutch slip you mention? I see 4000 at 70 on my 650ss and about the same on the Commando with standard gearing.
