Helen Christie - You are so right. I'm a Spurs fan and have never supported or cared for any of Gary Speed's teams, but every time I hear interviews like this I get a tear in my eye. It's a human story, not a football story.

Gary is such a sad loss, Bryn was distraught when he passed away. Beautiful tribute to a fantastic footballer, but a gentleman and decent guy, still so sad 10 years later, RIP Gary you will always be missed by all.

Can't believe it's been nearly 9 years, seemed an absolute top bloke. As someone who has mental health issues I can relate, no-one knows what's going on in your head and, personally, my outgoing persona is always one of a positive person. My dad took his own life, he was a relatively well off airline pilot with no issues that you can put your finger on. His suicide note was about 15 pages but didn't really explain why he took that option, in all honesty it sounded like he thought life hadn't gone in the direction he wanted, a little bit selfish to be honest given he had such a good job and didn't struggle for money but I suppose the scenario with Gary Speed, an extremely wealthy and much loved person, shows us that happiness doesn't come from what we would consider a comfortable life and that the battles we have in our minds don't have the words for us to describe. Thankfully mental health issues are taken much more seriously now, but men need to seek that help rather than feeling it diminishes masculinity.

My wife suffers with mental health issues, although she is coping very well with it now (mainly I suspect because she is now on the correct medication which keeps her brain chemicals in balance, if that makes sense), she has been sectioned in the past and spent time in (for want of a better description) a mental hospital / institution. I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, and even my wife said the same, but, Gary Speed looked dead behind the eyes on his last TV appearance on Football Focus, and by that I mean, that his face might have been smiling, but his eyes weren't. I have a picture of my wife at my daughter's graduation and she looks the same, smiling face but dead behind the eyes. She has been to some very low places and I've felt helpless and all I could do was be there for her. When "normal" people say they are depressed, what they really mean is that they are feeling a bit down or a bit low, but they can't begin to understand what real depression is like and neither can I. I am no expert but have some understanding of it through my wife's condition. And one last thing, do you know who the real experts on depression are ? I'll tell you who, it's the people like my wife and yourself who have to deal with this illness, not the psychiatrists or the Doctors, it's the sufferers, they are the ones who know the realities of life with depression. No one can possibly know or understand what it's really like just from reading books. All the best to you Jon.

@@lstapleton6639 up the Tooooon. Football does help when your team is doing well. I enjoyed seeing Leicester win the league a few years ago and I love it when the "smaller" teams give the big boys a bloody nose. I'd love to see Newcastle do a "Leicester" this season. I am a Womble myself and I always cheer for the underdogs .I am currently watching and hoping South Korea can upset Uraguay. Well done also to Saudi Arabia and Japan. I am 59 and as a kid I remember the likes of Moncur, Tudor, Nattrass, McFaul, T. Craig and D. Craig etc. All the best mate.

When is somebody going to address the elephant in the room that this must have happened as a result of bennell's abuse... if you were carrying around hidden demons like that since your teenage years, you would get good at hiding it, but you can't escape forever, at some point you have to come out with it or it is too overwhelming... but maybe he wasn't prepared to come forward and speak about it because people would then see him in a different light... he didn't want to lower himself and have everybody knowing that he was a victim of this sick abuse... maybe he always knew he would do this one day when it got too much... nobody else wants to believe this either so nobody in the public eye is coming forward and suggesting it, but there is an explanation to be found somewhere and you can't just keep saying I have absolutely no idea why this happened and ignoring the elephant.
