Chris Bachalo's first comic was an issue of "Sandman" (#12), then he pretty much drew the entire run of 1990's "Shade the Changing Man" written by Peter Milligan. It was during this series that you REALLY see Bachalo develop his style and skills from the very first issue 'til the last (70 issues). Beautiful stuff. In 1993 Gaiman selected Bachalo to do his "Death: The High Cost of Living" mini-series, which gave Bachalo a very well known name in the industry. Very soon after that Marvel hired him to draw the first issue of "X-Men Unlimited", which really shot his name into fandom. He then did the first 3 issues of "Ghost Rider 2099", then in 1994 he teamed up with Scott Lobdell and created "Generation X".

The first taste of Bachalo was Uncanny X-Men when he took over for Joe Mad, It felt similar but distinct and I dropped my Joe Mad obsession for a Chris Bachalo obsession that continues today!

When I was in 8th grade, each student was assigned one of the periodic elements to write an essay about the history of, discuss their practical use, and then present orally in front of the class. Sure enough, I ended up being assigned the 24th element - Chromium - completely by luck of the draw. Rather than focus on car bumpers or the exterior of old diners, can you guess which comic book I decided to bring in and show off in front of the class that day?

All of Bachalo’s scattered runs on Gen X toy with page layout, high contrast and perspective in wild ways. The spread when drunk Husk tries to kiss Chamber shown from the rooftop exterior brick wall exploding outward, bricks flying - at least one bird. He drew at least one cover featuring Vincente’s 616 intro just not the interiors.

Bachalo is one of the best mainstream comic artists of our time. His work on Generation X was super influential to me as a young kid. He and Mark Buckingham were an incredible penciler/inker duo, highly underrated.

I loved this issue. I was 13 or 14 when I purchased Generation X #1 at a comic shop near my school. Chris Bachalo's work on Generation X blew my mind. I still have this issue. Ed Piscor went to a bad ass K-Mart.

Shade the Changing Man was the Vertigo title that blew our minds with his art.

Bachalo was hitting his stride and this issue was a game changer for me. Taking the Art Adams and Lee and even some M. Golden flair and making it his own was so inspirational! Chamber's design was so flavorful and Jubilee finally got the attention she deserved. The manga elements with the classic American cars and risky special effects- all was ahead of its time! Bravo dissection video!

I worked at a comics/sportscards/pogs shop at the time this came out. I wasn't feeling any super hero stuff (deep into Fantagraphics and indy comics ) but it was love at first sight for Bachalo's art. Also, I want to publicly apologize to Brian Lee O'Malley for not leaving proper room for lettering when I did the art for the Oni book, "Maria's Wedding". Sorry Brian. Love your work since Hopeless Savages and congrats on the well deserved success!!!

I used to use tinfoil from my mom's cigarette packs for my foil cover mini-comics in grade school. You'd draw on the paper side and it would come out like embossed on the shiny side.

Bachalo is awesome , and a super nice guy. Lucky enough to get a beautiful 11×17 death sketch from him in 2019 before the 'vid gutted in-person cons.

All the Phalanx Covenant issues leading up to Gen X had the metallic strip featuring one of Gen X along the right side, I thought that was groovy. Seeing an entire cover done metallic was pretty cool.

I heard an interview with Mark Buckingham saying that he got that distorted xerox effect on the villain by actually moving the paper while it was being scanned by the machine.

Exquisite work by Bachalo- His Vertigo Death work is also superb.

Bachalo was definitely one of favorites as a kid. Am I the only one who sees a lot of parallels between his work and Sam Keith's? I've always felt this way and it wasn't til just a few years ago learned they both did Sandman/Death stuff.

I clearly watched these out of order haha You guys talked some about using screens on the AOA vid, I have an original page of his from Gen X #19 with a clear overlay taped to it where Emma sent Monet a mental image of someone and it was only drawn on the overlay. The whole page had a dreamy quality to match the telepathic exchange.

Bachalo’s Generation X is one of my favorite comic book series of all time-Marvel dropped the ball on that one as it had limitless potential. The black kid on the team’s code named SYNCH, btw.👍💥💥💥

Nice, one of my faves when it dropped. Also the Age of Apocalypse Generation X was badass. These were my first Bachalo experiences. Peace y'all✌🏾

These early Bachalo comics are what made me want to make comics. The expressive characters, the warped lens panels, wild effects were parallel to MTVs Liquid Television. Chamber, Skin, Husk- all had powers that get like the pains of being a teenager. The dark Buckingham inks were so scratchy and textural for this first run and seemed to lack during the later more cartoony issues. Generation Next is easily the most memorable arc- killing off a whole team of kids was Lobdells way of processing relationship grief or so I’m told, very profound impact on me as a 12 year old just getting into comics and only knowing them from cartoons. This was a game changer. I then sought out Death, Ghost Rider 2099 and Shade the Changing Man because I just learned so much mirroring his evolution and influences. This led me away from superhero books and into Vertigo and Indy comics. It was art school comics- you can see shades of Schiele, Klimt and Mucha in his painted covers and faces so clearly. Sadly he traded that all in for Disney style in recent years but the attention to detail remains his best attribute. I’m really glad you guys covered this, these were by far the most influential comics in my life.

CB's Colossus in Age of Apocalypse was badass.

The black mutant’s name is Synch (Everett). His rainbow aura is a manifestation of his power mimicking ability. I liked him but somehow he never took off as a character.

Colossus where's the pads and the skull cap because his metal has been blown off and his skin is exposed. In AoA almost all the characters have had to use their powers so much it has taken its toll Magneto lost 90% of his powers,Iceman is in permanent iceform state,Logan loses a hand,Cyclops has a eye taken out, Sunfire's flesh is completely burnt etc. AoA series is extremely dark and violent in a way nobody has seen before in marvel. It was a no holds bar groundbreaking event that gained a cult following. If you ever get a chance you should read it in its entirety and maybe you'll know why a lot of fans loved it👍

Loved Gen X man. This hit me right when I was really into comics. I fell in love with this. Still have my original copy from the news stand.

Loved Bachalo's style, felt very fresh very distinct. His style continues to evolve and become even more distinctly his as the years go by.

Bachelor did some issues of Shade: The Changing Man and Ghost Rider 2099 before Generation X. Loved that he brought that Vertigo vibe to X-Men

This was my favorite X-Men book for a minute (and the Generation Next mini during the AoA was my favorite of that event). I remember being really psyched for Bachalo after first seeing him on Shade The Changing Man with Peter Milligan. Consequently, that book is also worth a review on this channel. Specifically the storyline that crossed over with Hellblazer and sent them back to the Salem witch-burning days.

Man, I also used to draw lots of Prismacolor Penances back in the day, good times. Thanks for this, it was a good show.

Amazing issue. Loved the series and was about the time I started working for Marvel and had a big influence on how I did things. Also, you make me feel old saying you were 13! I was 22 though so im holding onto that! I was on the Marvel comp list and about 80% of the comics I got at that time were the foil covers. So much foil

Bachalo is like Bach as in Johann Sebastian with Mark Ruffalo's "alo" like buffalo. Also Jim's Gen X team was renamed Gen 13, it was okay, I still have the mini comic #0 that came with an issue of Wizard.

Fantastic episode

I had this comic when it came out, and I loved the design on the villain (can't remember his name). A lot of the characters I drew in the years after that had big respirator masks with a hose coming off of it because of it.

Man, Bryan is such a perfect fit for this show. I hope you guys do another run of pods with him soon!

So, I have a flipbook of Jim Lee's Deathblow on one side and Nick Manabat's Cybernary on the other, can't remember where or when I got it but I know Nick died just before Cybernary was going to start it's run and got cancelled. I've always wondered what could have become of it, looked amazing. Any insights?

It’s a great looking comic. Love Chris’ art from that time.

I have a soft spot for that 90s David Carson/Raygun look, but those sketchbook pages took that aesthetic and went way too chaotic with it. Nice to see a page of Bachalo's original art. This is my fav era of his.
