    I had the fortunate opportunity of hearing Mr. Hymel live @ the Kennedy center, Carmen (2015-16) season opening. If possible, his voice is even more stunning in person; strong but also smoothly textured. I could almost reach out & capture the notes in my hand, such was the consistency of Mr. Hymel's voice. I was taken aback by the quality created by his distinctive style; his pure talent generously weaving multiple musical elements together electrified the entire house. An experience I will never forget, I will treasure my good fortune and say if you have a chance- go see Bryan Hymel!!

    those folds are pure iron. damn. havent looked for a good recording for this aria from a real production in like 5 years. i gave up after realizing how difficult it is to make it to the end of that cabaletta without blowing out your voice. but he managed to do it quite well.

    He is fabulous! I have no idea what he is saying, because I don’t speak a foreign language. However, in this case it doesn’t matter because his vocal expression and body language is all that is needed. So insanely talented! A true down to earth guy in person too! Bravo!

    TODAY, April 26th, 2015 my friend, Jon Mason, introduced me to this phenomenal tenor. Yes, he's sexy as well. Mmmm This aria for a counter-coloratura tenor is like " Lucia's famous mad scene ". Stratospheric high notes. Very few tenors would attempt and pull it off with such success, Bravo Mr. Hymel I am now a official fan. Fabulous tenor voice. Strong, great agility, ringing high notes. Now, after hearing this I need to change my "depends". lol The only other tenor that pulled this off so well was Pavarotti in his heyday. Chris Merritt too.

    Dave. If you have not heard this aria sang by Michael Spyres may I recommend you try it. He has the most amazing voice and fabulous technique. He is actually a baritenor so his low register is full and rich and his high notes are equally full. There are a couple of versions of him singing this aria at different times. Both are stupendous.

    I don't know how to categorize this amazing voice! Strong and powerful, yet bright and agile, with amazing high notes! I would say he's more of a Spinto tenor, but his range and freedom of his high notes, heavy as they are, show that he's much more than the typical Spinto! I will be watching this tenor's career, sure to be the next great star!

    Muttonchop Hal The Heroic Tenor is a voice Fach not much used or discussed today. Fallen out of general knowledge and usage as Fach name since the mid 1900s. Not to be confused with the Heldentenor of German origin. The Heroic Tenor can have similar colors and brightness of a Lyric Tenor but with much more clarion high notes and just as agile as a lyric or even a leggero tenor. The Heroic Tenor needs to be comfortable with high c’s, C#, and even the High D. Generally found in the roles of Rossini, but surprisingly many Verdi roles were written with the Heroic tenor in mind.

    I saw him here in New Orleans earlier this season as Don Jose. The voice is pretty spectacular live. It's big, with a lot of cut and ping. He's a gutsy singer, and what I hear is formidable technique. I don't know where the "throaty" comments are getting that...it's not throaty at all, and I think he'll prove the naysayers wrong.

    Not throaty, it's called giving the sound space. Throaty sound doesn't come out like that. It would be strangled and you would have a hard time hearing him. You have to be a lyric, lyric-spinto and spend over a decade working on your voice to really understand. He also has a rare flexibility that allows him to sing both lighter and heavier repertoire. That comes with technique. Theaters are huge now. Not the little 1200 seat opera houses that golden era singers used to perform at.

  • @sananton2821

    @sananton2821

    It's throaty as shit. And singers sing the same in the small theaters, so that obviously has nothing to do with it. Pol Plançon sang at the Met, which even in his time was larger than any theater in Europe today. And throatiness doesn't make you louder, anyway. Literally everyone agrees that singers today are quieter, not louder. Del Monaco and Corelli were a billion times louder and not even slightly throaty. Listen to Achille Braschi in the modern era too. Nothing alike. Nada.

    Wow!!! Bryan Hymel is the real thing and, therefore, we can expect to see the same kind of comments expressed concerning Jonas Kaufmann --singing in the throat, etc.--well in the 50+ years of listening and seriously studying singing the sounds this young man makes are not how I would define a throaty sound unless, that is, I want to share my bitterness with the rest of the world. Do the boo birds know how DIFFICULT THIS SCENE IS!!! Mr. Hymel, in general sings very, very easily and only gives at the climaxes which, by the way, are almost stentorian.

    sopranosd Both. Domingo constantly sounded like he was pushing. For his top, for a bigger sound, when his language was insufficient. I would say Hymel isn't as bad, but he pushes his top and definitely tries to push for a larger sound. I think together with the his general tightness, this exacerbates the problem.

  • @sopranosd

    @sopranosd

    Alex Thomas I know what you mean. Domingo really belted out his top notes -- I think perhaps because he started as a baritone and perhaps felt more nervous than other tenors about high notes? Didn't he develop some vocal trouble and have to rebuild his technique? Of course, I love him for so many reasons, so momentary high note issues don't dominate how amazing the rest of his voice is. I always worry about people singing rep that might be just a tad too big for them. Spells potential vocal disaster. Pavarotti developed an edge to his voice from singing roles like Calaff which, at least to me, were a bit too bellow-y for his voice. So sad to risk. that amazing lyrical, air-filled, sound. I love Bryan's voice and I hope he pulls back on the pushing, as it were. It is such a special instrument!

    Joao Aurelio With all due respect, neither one of you has a clue.. This is a superbly supported voice, bright, buoyant production, with the requisite chiaroscuro of bel canto technique. The production is reminiscent of Di Stefano in his youth. There's no way Mr. Hymel would have the agility he displays if he was pushing his voice. Supporting, yes, pushing, no.
