While I understand the appeal, most people try to minimize their time at the airport, regardless how cool it is (possible exception is SIN only). And kinda unfair, Asia will kick their western counterparts into the curb even more, and Airports are something which are much harder to keep up to date/upgrade

David, this is the best trip report I've ever watched from you. The discussion of Northwest's history in Tokyo (with great old images), getting around the airport, and even including the brand and model of each seat on the airplane is really going above and beyond, very good stuff! But my favorite enhancement here from your older videos is your voice speaking all the narration instead of just captions on the screen. That makes it so much more pleasant to watch. I hope you keep making videos with all of those great additions which very few others ever include. I am not interested in a calendar, however.

My first fight was also on a Northwest DC-9, but on the other end of its time in their fleet. It was Cincinnati to Memphis in 1987, only the second year NWA operated DC-9, acquired from their merger with Republic. After 28 years in the fleet, Delta finally retired their last DC-9 in 2014.

Considering your ticket only cost $400 I think you got good service. Expectations have to be in line with the price paid for the service. Your 2020 flight may have been more premium but the price you paid was also more than double what you did for this one. Also, service isn’t just food and pillows on the plane it’s the ease of booking flights, check in process, security screening, baggage wait time and did your bags make it with you, and friendliness of staff on the ground and on the plane.

Thank you for the Northwest history! My second-ever trip as a 10-year old in 1975 was LAX-MSP on Northwest Orient - a DC10 outbound and 747 on the return. That was when people scheduled their flights to try the new widebodies - and my parents were as excited as I was to be aboard those jumbo jets. What a great memory. Thanks, too, for your candid review of Delta's current trans-Pacific service offering.

It helps a lot knowing what travel would be like to other Cities. I've been looking at flights with Delta flying out to Tokyo from the U.S. with A330 neo and this video answers a lot of questions I've been wondering on what the onboard experience is like post covid now that Japan is opening up again to tourists. I hope you continue making these kinds of videos and I love the idea of the calendar background!

When I flew delta in economy Atlanta to Milan the service was nice but when I came back Rome to Detroit the service was fantastic. The crew was friendly and they kept on offering drinks and treats. Didn’t even have to go back to collect anything. They brought it to my seat. They’re People oriented and the welcome safety video really speaks to their hospitality. They’re cut above the other US carriers.

Your reviews make me very nostalgic. I lived in Tokyo from 1967-68 and then again June 1969-71 going to Haneda Airport frequently. I then returned to the US and worked for the first wholesale tour company selling group tours to Asia initially using Northwest Orient Airlines (as it was called then). Over the years I've flown more than 20 million miles and now hold Delta Silver medallion status for life as a million miler. UA 3 million miler and AA almost 5 million miler. I've see it all and your video reminded me of a part of it. Thank you!!

The longer variant A330-300 was the shortest range wide body on the market at any point in its existence, since it first entered service in 1994 with range of 4,000 nmi (basically tied with A300-600R and the short range 767-300 for the first 6-8 years). And now, the second generation of that same "short range" wide body flies trans-Pacific between LAX and Haneda with plenty of range to spare. That really puts those ever-increasing numbers in perspective. Speaking of amazing range... Although the upcoming A321XLR doesn't quite have enough range for this route, it does technically have enough range and enough ETOPS rating for Tokyo to San Francisco. I still doubt anyone will fly it on that route, but I guess they could if carrying no more payload beyond 200 passengers and their bags. Wow

Years ago I flew between Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita with Delta. On the day of the return flight there was a typhoon which delayed the flight and we didn’t arrive into Hong Kong until after midnight. To my surprise Delta arranged several shuttle buses to send the passengers into different locations of the city even though it was their only flight into the HKG. Even as a star alliance gold with United, I do consider Delta a better airline.

I flew LAX to HND on AA back in February and it does seem similar in that Delta doesn't seem to have the same edge. It will be interesting to see how Delta does when I fly DTW to AMS in October on their a330-300ceo. It might also be worth mentioning that Delta has free Wi-Fi domestically now for Skymile members (free membership), which is a significant edge over AA and United.

NW was my first long haul flight from Guam and I remember flying them back in 1987 and stopping over in NRT on the way to LAX. I even flew them up until 2005 back home to Guam. I also flew with AA's PE on my recent flight. And man Delta did good on this one with their services. However I can't complain since I fly AA a lot on via non-rev. Safe travels!

From my experience, I think taking Toei Asakusa Line (都営地下浅草線) via Keikyū Airport Line is the easiest way to go to central Tokyo. You can transit at Shimbashi (新橋) or Asakusa (浅草) with Tokyo Metro Ginza Line (銀座線) or a loop of Yamanote Line (山手線) at Shimbashi but you must to make sure that you get the right train at Haneda Airport Station.

What you should know about airline food is that it’s not as bland as you think it is. It’s the low humidity and pressurized environment of the aircraft that causes your taste buds to work less efficiently, making the food taste bland. It would have more flavour if eaten on the ground

I’m flying Delta DTW-HND in a few weeks, so this video is timely. Only regret now after seeing this video is I’m seated on the right side of the aircraft when departing Haneda. Just checked the seat map and all the left window seats are gone 😢. Oh well, will hope for other sunset opportunities. Thanks for posting!

One of your best reviews yet! I absolutely love and appreciate the aviation history lesson at the beginning! I would absolutely buy a calendar. I have flown out of Narita, and that view of Mt Fuji will always stick in my mind.

I’m flying on the a330-900neo this fall from Minneapolis. I used to fly on the NW 747. I’m excited to be able to travel to Japan again.

It’s so nice to see the history briefing of Northwest airlines. It was very sad when delta decided to dehub Narita, and focus on Haneda & Incheon. It just like the end of an era that Northwest has been built since WW2. By the way, The Northwest Airlines History Center is located very close to the Minneapolis airport, you can even get there by light rail. It’s a must visit if you stop by MSP. I went there so many times for my thesis research, the staff in the history center were very nice and helpful . Highly recommended!

I flew Delta from MSP to ICN in their A350, and the service was similar, though I don't remember them having the snacks in the rear. I've also flown United from Tokyo Narita to Newark, and the Delta service was magnitudes better. It's been nearly 10 years since I flew American longhaul, so I can't compare them yet.

I agree with your complaint about the basic features of the seat. For whatever reason, U.S. carriers aren't interested in providing the little conveniences like flip-down cup holders on the tray tables and such. Also a bit odd not to have USB-C on either the screen or the power port on a brand-new plane. The Big Three have definitely taken advantage of the Covid cutbacks to get rid of little things to save money.

I would take this in a second! We're flying to Hawaii from the east coast next month which is an 11 hour journey, and granted we aren't going nonstop, we have a layover in San Fran, but between both legs we get NOTHING! No meals, no amenity kit, not even an IFE. And the flight was $900 RT. So I wouldn't be complaining about a thing.

In the 90s, NWA had another interesting Japanese route. JFK - KIX - SYD, to my knowledge their only foray into Australia. Far superior to clearing US Customs at LAX / SFO since you didn't have to worry about missing your Eastbound connection.

Loved the history piece in the beginning! One of my favorite flight review channels out there. I'm a Delta Gold Medallion and fly them a lot domestically as well as international. I agree that they do the basics well, offer a comfortable product, but the meal services need to be improved. Seems like a lot of cost cutting still ongoing. The Premium Select meals have also been drastically downgraded from pre-pandemic. Having just flown PS to Sydney, I was pretty underwhelmed with the meals. Another great review!
