Accent-wise - Ufthak was full on South London (somewhere between Streatham and Mitcham), Da Biggest Mek was full on Jasper Carrot Brummie and I couldn't tell if Badrukk was supposed to East Anglian or from the West Country (despite having lived in Bristol for almost 10 years...) and there were various others throughout the book. Tom Allenby did a grand job.

I’m not a huge fan of the Tau novels, but there are some great short stories. Broken Sword by Guy Haley, The Greater Evil by Peter Fehervari, and Voice of Experience by JC Stearns. There’s also Fire Caste by Peter Fehervari, which is excellent but VERY dark and more focused on the Imperial Guard.

@OddNumber1524 I doubt GW ever put this much thought into it, so it's probably just my own head canon but it's part of the radical acceptance of the Iron Warriors' style of warfare. Basically if you know for a fact that you will eventually get shot you might as well do whatever you can to increase the odds that the shot will hit you someplace non-lethal. The best way to do that would be to draw your enemy's eyes towards the thickest parts of your armor like the shoulder plate or to your leg. Especially if you've already lost your leg and had it replaced with an augmetic.

In a lot of ways I think your descriptions of the book really succeeded in that because as much as the orks are just having a bit of fun and the brotherhood of mars are being silly monk robots the weirdo stapling dead bodies together really stands out as someone who just doesn't "get it"

It's not a 40K book, although it does have a certain degree of Warhammer Fantasy to it - but I think all y'all would really enjoy "Grunts," by Mary Gentle. It's from 1992 so I don't know how findable it would be (and I'm 3,000 km away from you so I can't exactly lend you my copy) but it's a wonderful send-up of the stereotypical fantasy "Good vs Evil epic showdown" - from the perspective of the Orcs. Specifically a warband that has found a stash of magic weapons that begins transforming them into Marines, with both USMC and Royal Marines cliches present in full force. It is, perhaps, a bit dated on issues such as gender and sexual orientation, but only to the extent of a couple of one-liners being a bit cringy today. Also - in my very first 40K Space Marines army I was colour-coding the squads, and because of "Grunts" my Veterans Squad was Pink Squad.

The thing to understand about 40k orks is they are the only faction that is all about fun and having a good scrap, both in-universe and in real life. In universe, orks fight because it's fun and their cartoon physics and biology insulate them from the grimness of the dark future. There's no malice or evil in them, no ideology or religion they serve, they're just living their true, authentic selves. In real life, orks aren't often thought of as the most competitive 40k faction and you're unlikely to win any tournaments with orks. Instead it's all about the fun of having a horde of ladz and absurdly kitbashed vehicles and doing silly voices and shouting "WAAARGH" a lot. And while I'm not a 40k player, I am building both Ork and Ultramarine armies for Grimdark Future. You absolutely can enjoy both aesthetics, I would say precisely because they are so divergent.

Got a bit carried away when you were explaining the Mechanicus, Ian. For a book with a similar setup, but a very different tone, I'd recommend _Day of Ascension_ It's about a Genestealer Cult on a Mechanicus planet, so it's not as funny. It's actually very dark. The Mechanicus are not only petty and hypocritical, but straight up evil, while the Genestealer Cult is portrayed fairly sympathetically, but... well, they want everyone to get eaten by space bugs. There are some great characters in it. Definitely a type 2 Warhammer book, to use Ian's classification system. And can I just say that Ufthak totally ripped of Wazdakka Gutsmek? Come one, ramming a titan is the one thing he's famous for (that and going really fast, but that's hardly unique).

  • @stryke-jn3kv

I wish I liked this book more, it markets itself on being “The book from the Ork perspective” but it spends so much of its time dedicated to the perspective of the Ad Mech. Like I get what they were going for, they show off why this stuff matters to the Ad Mech and Iron Warriors so there’s more impact when the Orks inevitably wreck it, but the Ad Mech scenes drag on for too long, like I wouldn’t be surprised if the book was 55% from the non-Ork perspective.

The Adptus Mechanicus as portrayed in the some of the Cain novels are even more hilariously incompetent....

I personally don't think the book would work if it was just Orks. I liked the juxtaposition between the Mechanicum and Orks also it provided more context to what was happening and added to the comedy.

What's going on with Mira's shirt? Looks like it is possessed by the Warp.

I'd actually love to see a Mira review of Warhammer Adventures, seeing as I'm unlikely to read them myself and she seems to enjoy the lighter-hearted adventure aspects.
