Titanicus does a *really* good job of discussing the Mechanicus schism over the Emperor/Omnissiah. Plus, ya know, it's by Dan Abnett.

Oh man, Mira doesn’t like brutality she’s going to hate galaxy and flames.
The audiobook was brilliant. I put it on while my friend and I were painting a house. I could just hear him laughing from the other room. Such a fun book.
Ya'll need to read Ghazghkull Thraka: Prophet of the Waaagh! by Nate Crowley. Better yet, do the audiobook. Its super Orky but told from a Grot's perspective. 9 squigs out of 10.
Accent-wise - Ufthak was full on South London (somewhere between Streatham and Mitcham), Da Biggest Mek was full on Jasper Carrot Brummie and I couldn't tell if Badrukk was supposed to East Anglian or from the West Country (despite having lived in Bristol for almost 10 years...) and there were various others throughout the book. Tom Allenby did a grand job.

I love these book reports. Mira's questions and reactions to this stuff just warms me. Been teaching the kid of a friend how to play and its amazing how much im enjoying it. Seeing his little face everytime something big or terrible happens, is just fuel.
he also wrote a novella about the red gobbo which was a lot of fun.
The scene/conversation between Zaefa and Gavrak was my favourite part of this book - very tense and interesting, with a cool fight to finish it
I play Drukhari (nice elves in stylish clothes) and Swamp Bogglers (courageous Orks from the Age of the Sigma). So the Statement "If you play Elves you definitely don't play Orks", is untrue!
I went from feeling absolutely scandalized that this person was surprised by the amount of fighting in an Ork novel, to feeling happy that they got to discover the pure joy that is grots and squigs and all things orky. Ere we go!

@@miramanga 🤣 welcome to da WAAAGH!! If you do ever find you want some more ork fun, I highly recommend the Prophets of WAAAGH audio drama. It’s so funny and there’s lots of good grot action.
Secutor Mitranda was the GOAT of the Mechanicus in this book, badass non-binary Skitarii leader. I really hope they get a model some day.
I’m not a huge fan of the Tau novels, but there are some great short stories. Broken Sword by Guy Haley, The Greater Evil by Peter Fehervari, and Voice of Experience by JC Stearns. There’s also Fire Caste by Peter Fehervari, which is excellent but VERY dark and more focused on the Imperial Guard.
you guys are good team
Iron Warriors use hazard stripes to draw enemy fire to hard points on their armor

@dramsac17

@OddNumber1524 I doubt GW ever put this much thought into it, so it's probably just my own head canon but it's part of the radical acceptance of the Iron Warriors' style of warfare. Basically if you know for a fact that you will eventually get shot you might as well do whatever you can to increase the odds that the shot will hit you someplace non-lethal. The best way to do that would be to draw your enemy's eyes towards the thickest parts of your armor like the shoulder plate or to your leg. Especially if you've already lost your leg and had it replaced with an augmetic.
Mork and Gork, the Zig and Zag of the 40K universe :D Great book review. I'm tempted to get this book to read as it sounds awesome. Has Mira been shown the Ork Stompa miniature? If she like titans she'll love that :)
I still think the infinite and the divine is the funniest BL book, excellently narrated as an audiobook as well

Mira nailed it. I play orks and chaos.
I played both High Elves and Orcs and Goblins in Fantasy…
I agree with mira about all the gore but you have to remember it's hard as an author to point out the chaos ones are the "real baddies" when everyone's already chopping each other up and shooting each other with 10,000 exploding bolter shells. In a lot of ways I think your descriptions of the book really succeeded in that because as much as the orks are just having a bit of fun and the brotherhood of mars are being silly monk robots the weirdo stapling dead bodies together really stands out as someone who just doesn't "get it"
That is the shiniest, most reflective font I have ever seen on a shirt or maybe anything.

You guys are so fun to watch. Great vid!
It's not a 40K book, although it does have a certain degree of Warhammer Fantasy to it - but I think all y'all would really enjoy "Grunts," by Mary Gentle. It's from 1992 so I don't know how findable it would be (and I'm 3,000 km away from you so I can't exactly lend you my copy) but it's a wonderful send-up of the stereotypical fantasy "Good vs Evil epic showdown" - from the perspective of the Orcs. Specifically a warband that has found a stash of magic weapons that begins transforming them into Marines, with both USMC and Royal Marines cliches present in full force. It is, perhaps, a bit dated on issues such as gender and sexual orientation, but only to the extent of a couple of one-liners being a bit cringy today. Also - in my very first 40K Space Marines army I was colour-coding the squads, and because of "Grunts" my Veterans Squad was Pink Squad.
I love this book. It's the best comedic take on the universe since Ciaphas Cain.
i like this new progression
The thing to understand about 40k orks is they are the only faction that is all about fun and having a good scrap, both in-universe and in real life. In universe, orks fight because it's fun and their cartoon physics and biology insulate them from the grimness of the dark future. There's no malice or evil in them, no ideology or religion they serve, they're just living their true, authentic selves. In real life, orks aren't often thought of as the most competitive 40k faction and you're unlikely to win any tournaments with orks. Instead it's all about the fun of having a horde of ladz and absurdly kitbashed vehicles and doing silly voices and shouting "WAAARGH" a lot. And while I'm not a 40k player, I am building both Ork and Ultramarine armies for Grimdark Future. You absolutely can enjoy both aesthetics, I would say precisely because they are so divergent.
Thanks, another lovely review 👍 I think this may be my next book once I finish the False Gods, just to have a change of pace with things
I love Orks and of the Space Marines my faves are the White Scars and yeah, you’d never see me willingly play Blueberries so spot on
17:47 just orks being ladz 😂
Been waiting for this Book Club since you said you were reading this! Great stuff!
Got a bit carried away when you were explaining the Mechanicus, Ian. For a book with a similar setup, but a very different tone, I'd recommend _Day of Ascension_ It's about a Genestealer Cult on a Mechanicus planet, so it's not as funny. It's actually very dark. The Mechanicus are not only petty and hypocritical, but straight up evil, while the Genestealer Cult is portrayed fairly sympathetically, but... well, they want everyone to get eaten by space bugs. There are some great characters in it. Definitely a type 2 Warhammer book, to use Ian's classification system. And can I just say that Ufthak totally ripped of Wazdakka Gutsmek? Come one, ramming a titan is the one thing he's famous for (that and going really fast, but that's hardly unique).
@stryke-jn3kv

Totally, Wazdakka didn't even need to use a tellyporta to pull off his most notable kill which makes it all the more impressive.
Fungus the Bogeyman Crew! Nurgle Daemon prince of my heart ♥
I just realized that at 19:46 you literally could have just turned around and pointed at the picture of the mecha-gargant on the cover of the white dwarf magazine behind you

Mira's Fungus the Bogeyman point is great. It really links in with Paul Bonner's Ork art work.
mira was right the orks are just here to have a lovely time, that's why we love em
I wish I liked this book more, it markets itself on being “The book from the Ork perspective” but it spends so much of its time dedicated to the perspective of the Ad Mech. Like I get what they were going for, they show off why this stuff matters to the Ad Mech and Iron Warriors so there’s more impact when the Orks inevitably wreck it, but the Ad Mech scenes drag on for too long, like I wouldn’t be surprised if the book was 55% from the non-Ork perspective.
Warboss is loosely connected to Brutal Kunnin'... Mike Brooks really teased it at the end of that novel.
Yeh ! BOOK Club !
Admech even has Very Binary Characters!
My wife loves my Ork army. She loves the lore (if they believe it, it’s true). Especially the models.
In a strange way, this has made me desparetely want Mira to experience the Night Lords trilogy. I easily feel unwell at brutality in media, and I felt that way about the NL books, but it still just WORKED. It added to them in a meaningful way. Any chance that they are on the cards? Love the vid as usual, Ian and Mira!

At the mention of Orks having different UK dialects I have immediately clicked to buy on audible. If Geordie Orks aren't canon in the books they will be in my army!

Sounds like Mira needs to read Da Gobbo’s Revenge or Warboss for more grot action.
Just finished reading this yesterday. Thoroughly stupid romp. Loved it. The orks are the only happy ones in 40k. They have 2 gods, because if they had one it wouldn't have anyone to fight.
