Meet the fascinating Australian Brush Turkey (Alectura lathami) also known as the scrub turkey, bush turkey, brushturkey, brush-turkey, and gweela. Surprisingly, despite its name, it's not closely related to the American turkey - its closest relatives are the wattled brushturkey, Waigeo brushturkey, and malleefowl.
These unique birds make their homes in rainforests, forests, dry scrubs and open areas. Their habitat spans from the top of Cape York down to Wollongong, and you might even spot them in Sydney backyards, as seen in the footage I captured here in 2023.
