Lyrics:
There's a light on yonder mountain
And it's callin’ me to shine
There's a girl over by the water fountain
And she's askin’ to be mine
And Jesus is standin’ in the doorway
In a buckskin jacket, boots and spurs so fine
He says, “We need you son tonight up in Dodge City'
’Cause there's just too many outlaws tryin’ to work the same line”
Now if Jesus was a sheriff and I was the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
If Papa rode shotgun for the Fargo line
There's still too many bad boys tryin’ to work the same line
Well sweet Virgin Mary runs the Holy Grail saloon
For a nickel she’ll give you whiskey and a personally blessed balloon
And the Holy Ghost is the host with the most, he runs the burlesque show
Where they’ll let you in for free and they hit you when you go
Mary serves Mass on Sunday and then she sells her body on Monday
To the bootlegger who pays the highest price
He don't know he got stuck with a loser, she's a stone junkie what’s more she’s a user
She's only been made once or twice by some kind of magic
If Jesus was a sheriff and I was the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
And Papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line
There's still too many outlaws tryin’ to work the same line
Well things ain't been the same in heaven since big bad Bobby came to town
He's been known to down eleven, then ask for another round
Me, I’ve got scabs on my knees from kneeling way too long
It’s about time I played the man and took a stand where I belong
Forget about the old friends and the old times
There's just too many new boys tryin’ to work the same line
If Jesus was a sheriff and I were the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
And Papa rode shotgun for the Fargo line
There's just too many outlaws tryin’ to work the same line
Well there's a light on yonder mountain
And it's callin’ me to shine
There's a girl over by the water fountain
She's asking to be mine
Jesus is standin’ in the doorway
Six guns drawn and ready to fan
Said, “We need you son tonight up in Dodge City"
I told him I was already overdue for Cheyenne
If Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
And Papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line
There's still too many bad boys tryin’ to work the same line
If Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
And Papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line
There's still too many bad boys tryin’ to work the same line
If Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest

I'd love to hear it live. You might already know this, but when Bruce auditioned for Columbia Records, John Hammond asked him whether he had any songs he's never play live. Will happen. It's why Bruce and his people exist in the first place. A song held in the back pocket for 50 years? Think about this. Bruce rocks! God bless everyone
So he had this in his back pocket for almost 50 years! Tremendous Love Bruce!
They played this at villa park last night, he intro'd it by saying how he wrote it at 22 years old and is still figuring out what its about. I watched a documentry on the boss were he said,he wished he had sung less words and played more in some of his early songs ( greetings fromAshbury park springs to mind).this gem seems a perfect example of lyrics he wrote in 1972, held onto them and inserted them in to the pitch, tempo and general feel his music has grown into as he and the band matured.👍
I’ve heard the demo from 1972…I’ve heard the studio version from 2020…I’ve heard the live versions from the current tour in 2023…they all grab me in different ways. This is an amazing song from one my generations greatest songwriters. I REFUSE to turn off E-Street Radio when this song plays.
Maybe the best Song of the album
This song has touched me recently; I’ve been listening to the live versions on E-Street Radio, and it is constantly running through my head. My favorite Springsteen songs are “Darkness on the Edge of Town” and “The Promised Land,” but there is something magical with this song that brings a calm over me.

This letter was literally written for us, old young men who forty-five years ago had in Bruce our repository of dreams and hopes. An equal, a companion, a true brother who was there to advise us and help us grow. And today when I reread that same “Letter to you” I always stop at this paragraph where "If I was a Priest" does the magic that takes me back to those times when "The Boss" embraced me with his poetry and music and told me: kid, let's go together... I am on your side... and always will be... I am your big brother, trust me. I still do, bro! Thank you so much…

@Bruce Springsteen Are you kidding? Don’t say something like that! I easily can have a stroke! Just to answer you properly I have been to two of your concerts in my life. The first was an extraordinary event on October 12th, 1988, in São Paulo, the Human Rights Concert, the first time you came to Brazil. I was one of the firsts who entered the stadium. And for sure one of last to leave it after more than three hours of rock n roll with you and The E Street Band! Unforgettable! The second concert was in 2013 also in São Paulo just before your Rock in Rio presentation, 25 years after that Amnesty gig. You and the E Street Band entered the “Espaço das Américas” playing “Sociedade Alternativa”, Raul Seixas’ classic! The thrill, the energy and your commitment to the audience was the same a quarter of century after, three hours and 16 minutes of pure joy, happiness and rock 🎸! Having the opportunity to talk with you, Boss, or even going to one of your concert this year would be unexpectedly and absolutely wonderful! A true honor and something to tell my children and my little grandchild, Sara. Love, peace and big hugs to you, Patti, your family and each one of the E Street Band. P.S. I must say that your last soul album, ‘Only the Strong Survive’ was the best thing I heard in 2022. You did it one more time! Hope you have in mind releasing a Vol. 2. If that will be the case I would suggest you to perform ‘Too Late to Turn Back Now’ from Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose. I am sure it will be amazing and a smashing hit in your own cover!

Bruce has songs in his back pocket for DECADES, and then you have Billy Joel (basically) say "my songs say what I want to say. I finished telling new stories" IN THE EARLY 1990S! 😯 That has always blown my mind- surely Billy could have DOUBLED his discography by now

I love Bruce because he so often sings about places -- the real places where real people live, struggle and love -- and by doing that, he's shown us the real America beyond the media capitals and glitz cities.
Great old song. Love it. First saw Bruce at the Ledge (Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, NJ when he sat in with Sid Gottlieb's Heavy Trucking in 1973. Then in 1974 saw him at Montclair State College....awesome awesome times and music.
