Bruce Liu: Secrets to Success in Music, Life and Love

Some time ago, when our piano duo was giving a recital for the Vancouver Chopin Society (before the Chopin Competition even started) we mentioned to the organizers that there is one young talented pianist ,our friend and classmate who is planning to take part in the Chopin Competition. The name of the pianist was Bruce Liu, a guy they had never heard of before.
Just within a few months everything has changed! Difficult to find any music lover on the planet who is unaware of Bruce Liu's talent. Concert organizations are lining up to have him perform in their cities. Vancouver will be lucky to hear Bruce's playing soon too.
Please join (and enjoy) our casual conversation prior to Bruce's two recitals organized by the Vancouver Chopin Society.

Thank you for posting this intimate conversation between friends. It was a gift to observe it, and it's much appreciated. For me, Bruce stood out above all of the other competitors at the Chopin competition for a variety of reasons. The competition audience seemed to share my reaction to his performances as well. There was an undeniable feeling of being in the presence of greatness. His Eminor concerto was a benchmark performance that will stand the test of time. A sublime combination of orchestra, pianist and piano that's unlikely to ever be equalled or surpassed.

Your concert of tonight, March first, 2022, was absolutely amazing. I don't know if I hear your beautiful play or Chopin's beautiful music. I love your shallow smiles that move over your face while you play. Thank you for dedicating yourself so much to music and your humility. Yeah, it is kind of strange to honor you more because you won. You won because you played so well. Let the honor be about how you play, not because you won. I also very much liked J J and he got the last price. Who cares. When he played, I felt mesmerized. That's not less because he didn't win. I want to bless you that you will find your soulmate soon, and that you'll recognize each other as such immediately.

If an athlete won an Olympic gold medal , he can say his mission is accomplished. To Bruce his new journey is just started. He will have to prove to the world , most importantly to himself he can challenge the new highs by making his version of classical music. We love his music so much. It’s pure and spontaneous with top notch finger touch technique. His E minor concerto is played in my family every day. Can’t wait to hear he play the F minor. ❤️

And something else that makes his playing outstanding is his sense of RHYTHM. Even in slow nocturnes, you can always feel the underlying beat. In the rondo, he makes you wanna dance! What a guy.

Interesti.g about fact that pianists play the same. I agree that teachers are the ones who promote one way to play a piece, even down to the pedaling. Has been my experience as a piano major.

I was applying for a piano teaching job at a Steinway-only studio. I also wondered if pianists get paid by endorsing Steinway...as I saw many "Steinway Artists" As it turned out, they don't get paid! They get access to the Steinway network and Steinway pianos. I think musicians do get paid by endorsing watches, cars and even credit cards. This highlights the difference between cultures. In China and US, people pay high price to wear designer clothing to elevate their own status. In Europe, people don't show off designer items...it's true. why should you be a walking billboard for brands for free.

I also agree the 'winning strategy' is not having too many strategies. When I was younger, I never had any strategies...I applied to employers and I taught students without thinking much. Now I am older, I am constantly trying to please employers (when applying for jobs) and please piano students. I think it's 70%-80% being yourself/having your on style and 20-30% pleasing others. This talk really is very insightful! Thanks for doing the interview. you are an awesome interviewer.

He regularly checks the comments on his official Facebook page. But instagram can be overwhelming since he has 30+ thousand followers and if he reads and answers all of them, he has to be online for hours which is not healthy. I appreciate that he prefers to handle his social media accounts himself to keep the direct contact with his audience but there is a limit that he can do.
