He was the heart and soul of the MF band during his tenure with the band. I was in college at the time and we caught Maynard’s band every time he came to MN. He was featured on multiple tracks because the whole band got better when Bruce was swinging. Most inventive Bari player I have ever heard, there is simply no one who compares. Thanks for sharing this, truly the MF sound at it’s very best.

Best baritone sax player player in the history of jazz playing in the best band in the history of jazz----- I was privileged to hear him live a few times in the 1970's.

How have I never heard this recording before???!! As a lifelong bari player who idolizes Bruce's playing and memorized his Maynard solos as a kid.... THANK YOU!!

I got to study and play with Bruce for a few years at Fredonia and I often wondered how his sax didn't completely disintegrate after solos like this. He played that sax so hard that parts should have been flying off and all that was left was a brass tube, a dented Lawton mouthpiece, and a severely split reed. Truly a legend

Although I have no first-hand knowledge, I have been told by a guy who repairs instruments that, while the bari can withstand this level of playing, bass saxophones tend to have more problems.

I play a little alto saxophone. I don't understand how he gets incredible speed on that big, unwieldy horn. It seems totally impossible to me. But, since I saw/heard him do it, it must be possible.

Bruce lives near where I do and is a major part of the local jazz scene. I get to see him play several times a year. I recently saw him play with baritone player Claire Daly.

Thank you very much for posting this. This is not the performance from the live album, M.F. Horn 4&5: Live At Jimmy;s. This is an even better live performance.

Absolutely stunning. Do you have a list of the sidemen here? If not, is it basically the roster from the Chameleon album? Thanks.

This is a truly outstanding version of GOT THE SPIRIT (which you should put in the title!). Tell us more! Where is it from?
