@@tednugentlives Agreed. I've got an 1800, too. And it's nearly identical in tone to the DSD. The 1300 I had, before one of the coils opened up, was, for some reason, just a little more open sounding than the 1800 or DSD - even though it had essentially the same dc resistance. I need to get that one coil rewound / repaired by somebody that will pay attention to detail. That was/is a really great sounding pickup!

Here's the problem: Trying to convey slight harmonic differences with KZread's compression algorism is impossible. I am listening through Sony Studio headphones and I want to be able to say that I can tell a difference in the upper midrange...I would be talking out of my ass. All I can tell is it sounds almost identical to the album listening over the Tube. So I can't comment intelligently about the sound. But I grew up with all those Van Halen albums and know every note and as a guitarist I find watching you play them flawlessly is a real treat. I keep saying to myself "oh...that's the chord he ends the phrase on before the bridge" and countless other nuggets. You have worked out his catalog to the Nth degree, which is staggering considering who you're covering and transcribing. A real pleasure to see my guitar hero studied so well. I have seen Van Halen live seven times, with both Sammy and DLR. I don't count Gary Cherone as a serious lead man for VH. He's jiust a footnote in history. I know Eddie's live tone well. The studio work is where I struggle.

Sounds amazing. It seems to me the Super 70 is just like the old Super 58s- in a great piece of wood, they can sound like ass or glorious, so I'm guessing they varied quite a bit. I've played a Super 70s that sounded anemic, and one that sounded pretty punchy like yours here. Both guitars I played (one Ibby, one Fernandes/Burny) were loud and resonant. I've had a Destroyer II where the Super 58 was big and fat and another where it was thin and pokey. Both guitars were loud and resonant. Here I think the Super 70 has the right roundness and overall timbre, but the Super D has the right "attack"- more immediate, explosive and percussive. Either way, great tones and killer chops. I watched this a few months ago and meant to comment, and forgot. Popped up in my feed again today. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Jeff! Yes, I completely agree with your analysis - I think pickup manufacturing has come a long, long way in the past 20 - 30 years. If you look at pickups, say pre 1990, I don't think the consistency was there yet. Especially in the 70s and earlier. The Gibson PAF is the perfect example - most are average, but there are a few that are / were spectacular - most of that was due to the sloppy manufacturing process and varied magnets and magnet strength / charging. So, I'm sure those same factors "plagued" the Japanese plants...anyway, thanks again for listening and commenting - I really appreciate it!

The Kemper is 24 bit/ 44.1khz AD/DA's compared to the Fractal's 24 bit/48 khz and the Kemper's effects blow. Anyway, I programmed 20 or so VH presets for my new VH tribute band on the Kemper before I sold it and bought my Fractal XL+. I love it and now have 63 VH presets but to update more, I now have a FXIII and let me tell you, in under one minute playing, I don't know what they changed between these two models but my picking hand articulation went through the roof. @@marksanders650 Hey Mark, Yes, that is exactly my experience with the Kemper. I'm just not impressed with how the guitar interacts - it's not even close to a "real feel." I suppose if you rarely change your playing dynamics, and you always keep your guitar volume knob cranked, or in the same position, they're probably fine. And, I can see using one to do "one-off" fly dates, maybe...but, so far, I'm not thinking that it would be a solution for me. However, having said that, I have heard a bunch of good things about the Fractal. I've never spent any time with one, so I can't comment. I'll have to try one - it sounds like they may have gotten it figured out - or close! I think eventually, technology will capture all of the nuance that comes with "skillfully playing" a cranked up tube amp, but I don't think they've got it yet.

  • @jegauss

Hey Andrew! You're not wrong...I have a feeling that it was either the Super 70, with a slightly different / low mid eq bump than what I had, or it was the Mighty Mite 1300 (I have/had one - one coil went open shortly before I did the video - that's why I used the Super D). The Mighty Mite 1300 is a little brighter, and a little more open than the Super D. Therefore, it kind of falls in between the Super 70 and the Super D. Honestly, my feeling is that it was most likely the Super 70, with a slightly different eq setting than what I used. But again, this is all just speculation...I also have changed my theory about the pot value in the black & white striped Frank - I'm thinking it was a 250K. That's what would've been in the wiring harness that got transferred to the Frank (from the sunburst / alder strat, that the Frank was evolved from) and that would've created a lower resonant peak for the Frank guitar, changing the overall EQ on the guitar tracks - again, subtle, and speculation, but I've duplicated it here at the studio. I'll have more about that in the Fair Warning video that I'm working on - stay tuned!

After listening to this video and the original album on vinyl through a really high-end flat response system I’m going to have to say that hands-down the Dimarzio Super Distortion wins on all accounts. The low mid placement is right in the sweet spot and the highs sound To the album. There’s a certain sound of ceramic magnet has that an Alinco magnet just cannot deliver. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Not trying to disregard anyone else’s opinions, you could really tell the difference on the single stuff. Funny you should mention that - I originally had the Mighty Mite 1300 in that guitar - unfortunately, one of the coils died. It's a vintage pickup, and sometimes they do that. However, I agree with your assessment - the 1300 is probably a little more "hairy" than the DSD. Perhaps a little brighter, too. I do have a vintage 1800 that still works, but that one, is a little darker. I don't know if that's because of both coils being slug coils, whereas the 1300 are both screw coils, or if it's just a difference in wind/magnet???? They're supposed to be the same, and they are both from the 70s, but the 1800 just doesn't sound as good to me. That's why I went with the DSD for the video. I'll have to see if I can find a vintage 1300 again. It definitely was a cool pickup.

Also, you could check out Arcane Pickups - I'm pretty sure the Phil X model is, or extremely close to the original Super 70 - I think slightly overwound, but similar.

Yeah, those old DSDs used to howl! I remember. That's before they did all of the "epoxy dipped" stuff. I just used to wax my old pickups. That took care of most of that problem. I remember when I read that (from Ed's interview) in the 1980 edition of guitar player magazine, about a coffee can, and surf wax, and "melting pickups". Anyway, I just tried it on my own almost immediately after reading that. It worked! I did wreck a couple of pickups, but that was early on... Those Bandmasters, and the Deluxe Reverb are probably my favorite amps! They're simple, but when you turn them up, they just sound killer. I've got a '66 Bassman that I plug into quite a bit, too.

Both PU's compliment your tasty playing, so can't go wrong either way. I've owned and enjoyed both an original 1975 Greco Destroyer and an original Charvel Pre Pro with one Dimarzio SD. I would have to say the Greco was more articulate and focused, but as with so many things especially guitars, it's more about the sum of the parts than just the PU. In the end, the combination of a resonant body, a maple fretboard and the Dimarzio SD is what inspired me to create more and that's what matters most...to me. Greco is accurate. Dimarzio is a party...

Hey Kirk! Yeah, that's kind of the problem between these two pickups. Personally, I do think it's the Super 70 and not the DSD. The Super 70 has all the low mid mojo, midrange grind, clarity & high end extension. The Dimarzio is just attempting to mimic the post compression that would have been applied in mixing, mastering. It is not retaining the original characteristics of the Super 70. VHI was done in a couple days, no time for pickup swapping and the club photos of the same guitar used in the Sunset Sound photo are very likely the original pickup. Awesome video, thanks man!

  • @jegauss

Hey Tim! Thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback! I still can't decide, and I still feel like I can hear characteristics of both. However, up until I watched those Sunset Sound interviews on youtube, I was also always under the impression that VH1 "music" was tracked in a couple of days, and the vocals took a few days more - that turns out to be another myth. According to studio records, and people that were there, they recorded that album during studio off time, over the course of a month. They set up and tore all the gear down multiple times, and were gigging the whole time they were recording - plenty of time do a pickup swap - not saying it happened, just that it's possible. The tones change pretty dramatically among all of the songs (when you're really picking them apart), but that could be because of all the setup changes, moving from studio 1 to studio 2 for some of it, mic placement changes as little as 1/4" could account for some of the tonal changes - so, who knows???? I just decided to throw it all in! Thanks again for watching, and your input! I'm working on the VH II video currently. That's a whole batch of new stuff to explore.....stay tuned.

@@jegauss Hey Jim, thanks for the clarification - those points certainly make it far more plausible. I just watched the first video, man I really appreciate and respect your dedication - the first clip with the Musikraft guitar sounded spot on for the solo brown sound. For me, I'm always thinking about the OG brown sound because obviously it evolved. The OG one lit that fire - those Super 70's have rhythm dynamics that the other pickups seem to compress like they are trying to mimic analog tape compression. I just bought a pair of 1976 ones, both 8k ohms off eBay - I was convinced after additionally listening to Ossie Ahsen's destroyer in his video with headphones on. The Pultec secret certainly makes sense too with regard to the lows, the way it attenuates the frequency just above the one it boosts. The Metropolis forum has a Japan photo with the white destroyer's original neck pickup only swapped out - could be evidence of him using it or its' A8 magnet in another guitar. Tone sure is fun. If there is anyway to chat privately, once covid is done and if you are ever out in LA, I've held 1984. Unfortunately (or fortunately), KZread is as social media as I get. Looking forward to your VHII video!

@@timgosselin6984 Hey Tim! I have no doubt that those super 70s made it on a few recordings. Like you, I've even thought that the missing neck pickup ended up in the frankie...I'm sure it did at one point or another, but, the bobbins / bobbin holes are definitely Gibson in all of the super close up pictures. It's the same for the Shark - definitely Mighty Mite bobbins, and not Dimarzio (when the double cream pickup is installed). But, yeah, we'll never really know - but it is fun to experiment and speculate, and hopefully prove the hypothesis 😉 Wow, about holding 1984....many questions but, action and pickup height are my biggest wonders. I believe that the pickup was fairly far away from the strings, and the action was higher than a "shred guy." It has to be with those huge bends that he always did. It's the only way you can get enough string under your finger to push it that far...anyway, I agree on social media. Hate it, but it's a bit of a necessary evil these days. I let you know if I head to LA - it's been a long while.

Hey Jim, the thing that really sells me on the Super 70’s is the way the palm mute rakes make the Marshall bounce. That dynamic seems like a critical characteristic even as the brown sound evolves. It even adds a sense of space with the single notes. Pickup height definitely a factor - even the neck one’s influence. So many stories of those pros having mile high action too, I believe it! The answers are all likely yes, the younger brothers live in the same house. I don’t think anyone’s closer to the tone than you, keep up the great work! Hope to run into you in LA in the future sometime.

Have you ever tried the dimarzio paf pro? From the videos I have seen it probably sounds closer to the super 70 than the super distortion. It’s overall brighter with less low mids. I think the super 70 is more expressive at times but the thicker dimarzio also works here and there . I have a question with a pickup as old as the super 70, what’s the life expectancy on something like that? Iv heard people say they had to replace their pickups because they were too old , but I wonder if that’s due to damage to the pickup or if it’s magnet loses power . I would assume the magnet could get recharged. It would suck to get an old pickup just to have it flub out

  • @jegauss

Hey there, "Hey There," So yes, I've tried Dimarzio PAF pro pickups in the past - it's been an awfully long time, and as I recall, I wasn't overly impressed with them - but again, super long time ago. I would think the Dimarzio Super II is probably closer to the Super 70 - it's relatively close in DC resistance and it's got the ceramic magnet, which people often compare the A8 magnet in the Super 70 to a ceramic.....but, it's also kind of apples to oranges...as far as old pickups go...they do have coils the short or open internally from years of vibration, and magnets can lose a little bit of charge (not always a bad thing), but the coils can be rewound or repaired by knowledgable pickup winders and magnets can be recharged. I tend to like the older pickups because of the way they're wound. They tend to be less "boomy" in the low-end, like the many / most of the new pickups are wound. The older pickups tend to be more even across the frequency range. Of course that's my opinion and anecdotal at that - but that's my feeling on them.

I have 2 Gibson sg with humbuckers and always thought they were lacking in mid clarity, too boomy yet too spiky up top. Then I played the dog eared p90s and realized the p90s haBe much clearer flat midrange without top end spike or bottom mud. I agree totally with humbuckers seemingly not being even in their range . That being said I played a guitar with the super 70s at a store recently. I ended up buying it, I kinda thought I was passed humbuckers because I felt they were inferior in the midrange . The super 70 does seem to have a nice balance , probably due to its a8 which is similar to a4 in evennnes as far as I know . The super 70s make my brightest junior with p90s seem dark . It’s definitely brighter but fairly evenly voiced throughout its range, more top end than p90 for sure . Still feels quieter on a recording versus p90 since the 90 has more mids. The p90 at the same volume comes off as “louder “ and “more present ” . In person the 70 doesn’t feel quieter, infact I can tolerate it less at the same volume as a p90, Since it’s bright . In person it was a bit too bright for practical playing at that volume though , top end was a bit much for me . I’m curious about humbucker seized p90s, there’s one I’m looking at, usually the humbucker p90s seem to have that sorta scooped tone of a humbucker , but with overall more prominent clear mids. I gona compare the super 70 to my gibson humbuckers . It’s definitely brighter but I wonder if the extra low mids of the Gibson’s will benefit once recorded . I actually thought the super 70 would be more “present“ recorded than the p90 or atleast similar but sure enough p90s take the cake for recorded presence and forwardness, the 70 has a nice “airy openness” to it though

@@heythere6983 I love P90s! I've got gold top with p90s. That's my "go-to" slide guitar. I think your analysis is spot on. The Super 70 is a bright pickup, but not really much brighter than an old Gibson T-Top (which is about the closest thing to an original Gibson PAF) - they just have more "push" do to the A8. I don't know the age of your Gibson humbuckers, but if they're the '57 classics, I find the Classics to be pretty good, but the Classic + is a little tubby on the bottom - not as even as the original PAFs (at least the ones that I've played). I think Gibson's best humbucker is the Burst Bucker 2. the Burstbucker 3 gets a little too hot, and the BB 1 is good in the neck position. But yeah......I love those P90s!
