A few weeks ago, we asked you guys what your most burning questions were about recycling plastic.. and BOY did you deliver! This took us a long time to shoot (even longer since we spent the first 2 hours talking without the mic switched on 🤦🏻‍♂️) but we had an absolute BLAST answering all of these!
What do you think about this style of video? Let us know in the comments - we'd love to know. Also, if you have more or follow-up questions, be sure to ask them in the comments and hopefully we can make this as useful as possible. All the links for everything we discussed are down below.

PET and PS (Polystyrene) can be done using the injection method, but as you mentioned before, getting the melt temperature right is sometimes hard. The extrusion method is best as the screw moves the plastic at a consistent rate through the heated barrel. NEVER allow the plastic to sit in the barrel for more than 3-5 minutes or it will start to produce toxic fumes. Acrylic can also be used with injection and extrusion molding to make items but is a little more tricky if doing it at home. For those who do not have the ability to buy a machine (vacuum cleaner/shop vac) you can use a 2 liter bottle and a computer fan to make a small vacuum cleaner to pick up the plastic dust. I no longer work in the plastics field as I was forced to retire about 10 years ago due to medical issues, so, though I like your content, I regret that I could never become a patreon or channel member as I barely get enough from the government to support me each month. However, that does not mean I can't help you here by passing on some of the knowledge I gained while working in injection/extrusion molding.

Just a little 'how I do it' regarding the plastic shopping bags, I use a heat gun, but have a cookie pan to contain the plastic bags as I heat them. I wear some leather work gloves to work the plastic and put it in a cake tin (pan] to cool. I also use the heat gun to collapse milk jugs. I get the labels off of the milk jugs first by using a hair drying gun and run it over the label for 10-15 seconds and peel it off. The label adhesive will come off with a little WD40 but then there's the residue from the WD40 to wash off, so there's a trade off. Lastly, for us stubborn Yanks who still use Fahrenheit, that's about 350-370F to get the HDPE into its malleable state. Awesome video with a lot of good questions and bang on answers. P. S. Go with salinity. Saltiness can sound a little 'randy'.

Yellow, blue, green, red and white. While it may be more work, I do not have to scrounge for bottle caps etc. I am planning to be forming plastic mallet heads for Croquet. Several of my friends have custom wooden mallets but I was looking for a unique mallet and the HDPE gives me great enthusiasm. Thanks guys. I tried about 20 different glues in my garage on bottle lids and nothing stuck. If there was something that would chemically melt and weld the two together that would be awesome. ...or (crazy thinking out loud), is there an epoxy that cures at a really high temperature ? Dunno. I'll stop waffling now :)

It's almost like it's thin layers of plastic that's been printed directly onto the bottles. Best method I've found is attempting to scrape it off and it flakes sortof. It's really hard to describe. I have a whole bag full of the labels I've cut around from containers in hopes that someday I can salvage the plastic they're stuck to. Maybe I'll have to send a picture to your Reddit or Instagram to show exactly what I mean. Ps. I've discovered the best way to remove printed on (like ink or paint) labels is to let them soak in hot or boiling water until it becomes room temperature. Dry fully and then you should be able to use your nails to scrape off the paint/ink and it can come off in chunks or flakes. The only thing I've found so far with this type of label are Folgers coffee red plastic tubs.

I've used a heat gun on labels with pretty good success. I just run the heat gun over the label for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then peel. They peel off leaving very little residue, which I clean with goo/goop off or soap and water.

re: mixing HDPE, LDPE and PP together. This is actually a common industry practice, at least with the LDPE and HDPE mix. They are called plastic alloys. As a example you want something half way between HDPE strength and stiffer than LDPE, manufacturers will blend the two together to get a certain mechanical strength. PP and HDPE can be blend in low percentages. While we in our shop use a lot of shredded HDPE bottle caps, some PP caps do find their way into the mix. Additionally we have experimented with HDPE and PET alloys. There are some companies that make a HDPE/PET alloy for shipping pallets. We have also experimented with the "everything plastic" complete mix of HDPE, LDPE, PET, and whatever plastic films that came in the batch. We have had some luck with it, even the mylar food bags mixed in. We are not the first for that one however. the Andrey Kolev youtube channel is doing a everything plastic with sand mixed in and then extruded to be compression molded to plastic pavers. Mr. Kolev explained that the key for his everything plastic mix was that he pre-extruded the plastic mix, then grind and re extrude to ensure a very thorough mix. His videos were very informative when we started our compression molding experiments. I will warn you that in our personal experiments with the food bags and packaging materials, was something that smelled quite bad when molding (from the food waste residue) but once cooled had minimal odor. We are experimenting with a pelletizing method for these plastics at this time, but not ready quite yet to release publicly.
