It was easy to choose. We chose it all, cause it was fire to be living in the midst of all that ear candy. I will say that looking back, I never realized how blessed we were to be coming up with the 60’s & 70’s music, at the turn of the radio dial, turntable, or even 8-track. So thankful to still be rocking it at 60.

@@jasonlefler3456 To be completely correct: Pye Dubois (lyricist for another big 70's Canadian band, Max Webster) wrote a poem called "Louis the Lawyer" but never turned it into a song. He gave the poem to Neil and he turned it into the Tom Sawyer we know, adding the allusion to Mark Twain's famous story. The two also collaborated on two other songs explicitly (with writing credits): Force Ten from Hold Your Fire, and Test for Echo (from the album of the same name). Further a poem he wrote, "There Is A Lake Between Sun And Moon" inspired much of Counterparts. Truly a wonderful collaboration.

Yes, Rush is another great band that you are going to love. Definitely an extensive catalog and the musicians are unreal - all three of them are unbelievable musicians. Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Geddy Lee plays both the bass guitar and keyboard (sometimes at the same time) and sings. Tom Sawyer is a good place to start. You should eventually do some live videos as well so you can watch them play (particularly Neil Peart) - maybe YYZ (an instrumental) live in Rio.

@@cadleo Vocally, just no. McCartney could go from Yesterday to Helter Helter Skelter, and John was a terror on Twist And South. Not to mention their harmony game. Lee sounds like a girl undergoing transition. And songwriting is not arguable; Paul was a melody machine unmatched by anyone except perhaps Andrew Lloyd Weber. Plus Paul could play all instruments to the degree he could create the Back In The USSR track. Rush was better on their individual instruments in a showy prog rock way although Rolling Stone magazine puts McCartney over Lee due to his melodic bass lines. Even then, I put Eddie Van Halen, Keith Moon, and Flea over Rush's playing skills.

Tom Sawyer is the title character in a novel written by one of the greatest American authors, Mark Twain (I hope you've heard of him!). Tom is a young boy living in a mid-nineteenth century small town. He's often in trouble through mischief, because he rebels against the contemporary conventions of society. The lyrics of this song imagine what Tom Sawyer would be like if he lived in the late 20th century.

Nothing like the rush from listening to your first Rush song ! Great reaction ,Canada's #1 export . Rush was influenced by the band YES ,and Geddy Lee plays bass like Chris Squire from YES , and both bands are progressive rock bands .Rush are the masters of prog rock with the smoothest transitions ever made . The fact that all this music is from 3 guys that are all three masters of their instruments , is mind blowing . no other three piece band puts out so much sound , with no tape loops , computers, or auto tune . 40 years of music to choose from , so the rabbit hole is deep but worth the journey .I saw your Yes reaction and yes ,Yes is great and they were a big influence on Rush. You also mentioned Pink Floyd , another great band that influenced a lot of bands . For me there is no # 1 favorite band ,Rush and Pink Floyd are my #1 bands . Pink Floyd is the blues on Acid , and Rush is like jazz ,rock , and scifi put in a blender. Both bands are often imitated but never duplicated , and can make you forget about the days problems and take you on a journey out of your body .I would suggest Spirit of Radio , or Freewill , Passage to Bangkok , Lime light ,or Red Barchetta next , and this is just a drop in the bucket but enjoy. Keep on reacting and the Rush Army will keep on watching .

One of the cool things about music during the 70's to early 80's was that bands and their record companies pretty much thought of playing live as a means to promote an album. They would even take a loss to tour, because they thought of it like any other promotional expense, like advertising. So they played more often, and in a lot of smaller markets as well. In the little town I lived in, we might go to three shows in a week. Lot of nationally known bands, if not necessarily superstars: Rush, AC/DC, Judas Priest, UFO, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, KISS, Mahogany Rush,...

'Tom Sawyer' is a fictional character(?) from the story 'The adventures of Tom Sawyer' by Mark Twain, which is about a young boy living in pre-civil war Mississippi, who dreams about adventure but has a tendency to get into trouble instead. Its sequel novel is 'The adventures of Huckleberry Finn'... I don't know why the books r so controversial - it depicts the reality of life in the south, back when slavery was a reality. Huckleberry Finn's closest friend was a black former slave, 'Jim'... Finn and Tom Sawyer risked their lives to get Jim free, after he was sold by scoundrels. 'Tom Sawyer' by Rush was written in 1981... (The late) Neil Peart (drums) wrote the lyrics, likely reflecting on what an adventurer/ thrill-seeker like Tom Sawyer would be like in that era.

Here for the Rush. This is the most popular song from their most popular album (Moving Pictures). You've got 40+ years of amazing Rush to cover. Distinctive sounds from the 70, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. I recommend listening to the studio versions of most songs first, and THEN checking out the amazing live performances from throughout their career. These 3 guys are widely regarded as some of THE best on their respective instruments, not just for their time, but for ALL time. They produced a richness, a depth of sound, with 3 people that most larger bands struggle to attain. Neil Peart (say "peert" not "pert") is "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". He is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in history. He joined Rush for their 2nd album, Fly By Night, and wrote the vast majority of their lyrics. Nicknamed "The Professor", he was a great drummer, thinker, and poet. He has influenced generations of drummers, notably Danny Carey of Tool. Check out any of his many drum solos to see his greatness in action. The Rhythm Method, O Baterista, Live in Frankfurt, YYZ Exit Stage Left, and his Buddy Rich tributes as well. Neil sadly passed away in January 2020 from brain cancer. Geddy Lee is one of the best bassists in the world, with an amazing voice to boot. He is also the lead vocalist, plays keyboards, and also a bank of foot pedals, frequently all at the same time. Alex Lifeson is simply the most underrated, or at least under-appreciated guitarist, hands down. YYZ Live in Rio, Working Man Live in Cleveland 2011, Xanadu live 1981 Exit Stage Left tour, 2112, La Villa Strangiato, Anthem, Bastille Day, Lakeside Park, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, The Necromancer, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, Limelight, Freewill, Spirit of Radio, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, Witch Hunt, The Big Money, Territories, Red Sector A, The Weapon, Kid Gloves, Where's My Thing? Here It Is!, Mystic Rhythms, Middletown Dreams, yeah, just listen to them all. 🔥🔥🔥

I am so blessed to have grown up with all of the artists you mentioned, and so many more - Rush, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Kansas, Queen, SuperTramp, Heart, AC/DC, and on and on and on, and to have seen so many of them in concert. Today's music is pretty much crap in comparison, especially when you consider that there was no auto tune and very few ways to electronically manipulate the music like the have today. Either you brought it, or you stayed home singing in the shower. Imagine that Rush is just three guys pumping all of that sweet music out. It sound like there would be at least 5 members in that band.

You really can't go wrong with Rush. They're my favourite band, every song is great (even the "bad" ones of which there are very few). Three phenomenally talented guys making the music they wanted to make, rocking your socks off every minute of it. And yes just 3 guys made this: Geddy Lee, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, primarily bass + vocals, and doing synthesizers with his feet (that opening note to this song is a pedal synth) and hands when available; Alex Lifeson, one of rock's most innovative guitarists (it is often said that, in any other band he would have been the star, but in Rush he's 3rd fiddle!); and of course "The Professor" Neil Peart, an incredibly gifted lyricist and absolutely rock's greatest ever drummer. His passing in early 2020 from a rare brain cancer just as he was getting into his retirement hit a lot of us hard, he was a man who had endured so much (including the death of his entire family in the late 90's, which he came back from after traveling over 55,000 miles in 14 months across North America to give the world 3 more Rush albums; he left behind his second wife and 11-year-old daughter, just tragic), and really poured himself into his lyrics. And they pulled it off live too. Recommendations of where to go from here are limitless, but I think Limelight from the same album is a great next pick. You can really just pick and album and song at random and there's a very good chance you'll be impressed, but that song's lyrics are really profound, reflecting the struggle of a man who had become famous but *did not* want the spotlight, and for us introverts it's incredibly relatable. From there, 2112 is a masterpiece epic (at over 20 minutes long) but worth every minute for the sheer sonic voyage it takes you on; or go further into their 80's and 90's (and 2000's) output where they shifted styles 3 different times to keep themselves fresh while never losing what made them them.

This song came out when I was a little kid. It was just normal. Music was such a large part of the culture. And yes we went to concerts all the time. That's all we did was save money to see the next band in town. My whole life was listening to music, going to concerts, and watching our friends garage bands. There was definitely some type of musical Renaissance going on. It's nice to see younger people appreciate it. You should learn about Jimi Hendrix. Buy Electric Ladyland, play the whole double album from beginning to end. It will change your life.

One of Geddy Lee's, the vocalist and bassist, greatest influences was Chris Squire from Yes. In fact he helped induct Yes in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame

Getty Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush were highly influenced by the Band YES which you covered in this Channel with Roundabout. They introduced Yes for their Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction and Getty Lee played bass on Roundabout live per the late Chris Squier. In turn Rush made it into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and the Foo Fighters paid tribute to their idols or one of them: Rush. Prog Rock Legends. Take a listen to more Yes and to Rush they never disappoint.

I wanted to add to the “ how did we choose” question : Back then, everything was word of mouth, music magazines and of course, going to the record store. Others have pointed out the excitement you would feel going to a record store and searching the bins and then finding a new one you would just buy before even listening to since you already knew the bands and their previous output. It really did feel like a magical time, because there was a whole process . Everything wasn’t immediate and only one click away, like today.. nothing feels very exciting today. There are no real surprises anymore as everything is reviewed and previewed and sounds like shit on today’s audio sources. There was nothing like going to your friend’s house that had a huge stereo system and putting on a new record like this one, full blast while toking on a fat doobie. The sound was incredible. Even with the record “ crackle” the bass was fat and huge and warm and the drums hit you like a professional mafia beating. There was nothing like it . Today’s “ downloads” just don’t have the same impact or sound.
