    The extra wire on the coil should be the by pass /relay feed from the starter solenoid. It by passes the reister to give the full 12 volts to the coil during starting. That starter bendix will chew up the ring gear if it hasn't already. That engine hasn't had any real maintenaince for so long, it needs the valve clearance checked. Run a compression test and see just how good the valves and rings are.

  • @rosstheoliverman

    @rosstheoliverman

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s why I wanted him to bring it here. I want to check all the valves and just give it everything that it needs, a very thorough tuneup. Yeah I thought of that after the fact, it’s like the old Ford trucks they had a bypass wire too to get full voltage while cranking

    Cool tractor. Interestingly it was almost the end of IH. It had huge rear ended problems and it was the first major tractor recalls in history. Rumors are it cost around 19 million to fix it all. But they fixed it and in the long run it made for some loyal customers.

    We had a 63. The rear end was updated. Never had a bit of trouble with the whole tractor. It was easy on the diesel fuel and never took any oil or coolant. As far as them costing 19 million, I say Bullshit.

    He needs to change out that bendix drive on that starter. Best thing to do is have the starter rebuilt. You're right, those resistors do go bad over time. Should only be 2 wires going to the coil. Learned a long time ago, when having issues like this, just go through the entire ignition system, clean the carb. readjust valves and double check that timing. These old tractors are so simple to work on. Great video, cheers :)

    Those 6 cyl IH are simple yet have a few complicated quirks. I grew up with a 656. The heat riser spring and flap on the manifold are critical. Full fuel flow thru a sediment bowl only is best (although a fuel pump with better filters is a great add on option ). Distributor slop affects running smoothly. Bent push rods can happen when a valve sticks from bad fuel. The 656 had A 6v coil with 12v starter bypass circuit. Also the 656 has an electric solenoid instead of a main jet screw--lots of problems between farm corroded wires and an occasional poorly built solenoid. These are usually sleeved engines, except the c301 in 806 or many of the combine engines.

  • @karlfischer1011

    @karlfischer1011

    Interesting that ih has cylinder numbers on the cap. A few distributors interchange but aren't right by application, who knows what's been swapped. There are generally straight or curved points that will fit,, i think the points plate is the determining factor there.. The timing advance mechanism can also rust stiff. We ended up replacing the manifold assembly on the 656 a few years ago and the phantom issues went away! IH wiring can get over complicated with only the lights being fused, and extra wiring like you're finding. kinda like an exercise of how complex can we get.

    It’s amazing how much stuff gets altered over the years by people. The biggest problem with this tractor was being screwed up where it wouldn’t run, I never got to hear what it ran like before to know what the original problem was he was having. If I understood him right the way I left it it was running much better than it has in years and that’s not saying a whole lot.

    Hey Ross,I'm glad you are helping that guy. His story is very frustrating to listen to. They sell him the wrong parts, then charge him anyways, can't get it running for him, and leave him lost and frustrated with a tractor that is all messed up. And you sir,had it running in a matter of minutes. I'm sure you made his month. Glad there are still people like you helping the people who get left behind and dismissed.

    Hi Ross don't no if i can help or make this more complicated lol I see your working with a 12v coil with an external balst resistor, the coil has 2 lives to feed it 1 being a 12v feed from your starter so the coil only sees 12v at crank and the second live is from resistor the main 12v live comes from the key to feed the resistor to only give out 7v( if I remember correctly) to the coil so it don't melt the points with them being giving 12v constant . The coils you personally use has this built in to them so only need the 1 feed from the key . Hope this makes sense to you and helps but am inclined to go with you on the mechanic or carb issues as its was running and I think it be far worse running or struggle to start if it was ignition (no back firing etc). Oh plus great videos fella keep them coming 👍

    Thanks Andy! Yeah, I figured that out later on editing the video. The old Ford trucks were the same way they had a hot wire direct to 12 V that was only on during cranking. This poor tractor though needs a lot of wiring sorted out somebody’s been in there hacking and it’s all messed up. Thanks for watching!!!

    When he said he had over hauled it himself I thought well that explains alot right there. Most of the young mechanics have not been trained to diagnose a problem just to plug in the test equipment and replace what it tells them to. That is not their fault it is the lack of basic training for how things work and why. I have heard the statement, you don't know what you don't know. The dealer mechanics didn't have the basic diagnostic training to figure out that all of the basic requirements for it to run correctly were not working properly. I have done some of my own work but I know what I don't know so it goes to the shop where my mechanic can diagnose and fix it correctly. He knows I am not going to second guess what he does because he fixes what is wrong and it is correct. Good mechanics are worth the money but part changers are not.

    I'm surprised you don't know how to time the engine with a test light. engine off, bring the engine to the timing mark, doesn't batter if it is on number 1 or 6. put a test light across the non ground side of the battery, this works with both positive ground or negative ground, the test light will go out when the body is rotated in the direction of rotor rotation. When it goes out rotate the distributor in the opposite direction until the test light comes on and lock it down. perfect timing every time, even before ever starting the engine. Sadly this only works with points type distributors.
